DISCLAIMER: Your Steps and Tasks may be different

This is a Dwarven only quest.

Frimeth in Vasudheim is concerned about a hole that opened up in the earth, sucking in the lifeforce of fellow dwarves, leaving them mere animated skeletons. He can use the dust of their bones to fashion you an item.

Frimeth says, "Your assistance [is needed]!"

Frimeth says, "A [scourge] has presented itself at a location not far from here."

Frimeth says, "Aye! Tis a place where many of my kind have met their deaths... [A hole] in the bottom the earth that sucks the last bit of life from all dwarves who fall dead upon its barren ground."

Frimeth says, "Beware [the hole's power], for should you fall dead yourself you may rise up as one of it's minions."

Frimeth says, "I could tap this power for you and [fashion an item] of great use. That is if you are brave enough to meet this terror."

Frimeth says, "Aye! If you could bring me [dust] from one of the [dwarven skeletons] which walks there, I will create it for you."

Frimeth says, "This dust can only be taken while you wield the gift bestowed to you by your house."

Dialog box: Do you accept the Hold of the Dead quest?

You have been given the Hold of the Dead quest.

Frimeth says, "Aye, the evil lay not far from the main road. Look in the mountains to the west soon after day turns to night. Wield your house gift now and go seek the skeletons, or [tell me] if you need a new one."

Frimeth says, "Perhaps you should check your backpack. I think I see your house gift sticking out of the top of it."

And if you do not have your "house gift" Frimeth will give you a new one. =)

[Step #1] Slay a dwarf bone skeleton while wearing your House gift. The evil lay not far from the main road. Look in the mountains to the west soon after day turns to night.

The Dwarven Bone Skeletons spawn at night in a depression off the main road. When coming from Vasudheim, at the crossroad going to Mularn and Audliten, keep going straight west. The depression is very specific and contains fragile skeletons (which you can find all over the area at night) and Dwarven Bone. Not all bone skeletons drop the dust.

There's another camp near Fort Atla that has Dwarven Bone Skeletons at night, along Seikothna Initiates. Those skeletons also seem to have dust (when fighting them normally, you sometimes get a message that the bones turn into dust).

You receive a dwarven skeleton dust from the dwarf bone skeleton!

[Step #2] Return the dust to Frimeth in Vasudheim.

Frimeth says, "You have returned to us, and in good order! Have you brought with you the dust of a dwarven skeleton?"

You give Frimeth the dust of a dwarven skeleton.

Frimeth says, "You have done well. Here is the reward I have promised you! Fare-thee-well in the rest of your travels."

You receive Dwarven Boots of Air from Frimeth!
You have finished the Hole of the Dead quest.

Reward:
Dwarven Glima -- Berserker, Skald, Thane, Warrior
Gloves of the Eternal -- Healer and Runemaster
Dwarven Boots of Air -- Hunter

Rewards:
  Dwarven Glima
  Dwarven Boots of Air
  Gloves of the Eternal

People tend to forget that there are factions in DAOC.
Perhaps there is a way for non-dorfs to raise there faction enough to get this quest.
The Quest.

I got this quest yesterday, was a level 10 dwarf warrior. Told me "You have to wield the weapon bestowed upon you by your House"

From previous posts though, it seem one can ignore that part.

The info reads "Healer" but im thinking it's more along the lines that you have to be a dwarf if any restriction is applied. Probably there was some restriction but it is now removed.

Will post more in a few when I've finished the quest.

I just did this quest with my lvl 8 dwarf healer, and got Gloves of the Eternal (cloth gloves, 2af/0abs, +4piety)

This quest was not given to a lvl 8 or lvl 9 hunter. Holding your bow does nothing Dungan.
Hole Finally Located

I searched forever trying to find that bloody depression and found it just a dawn was approaching, so I had to kill some time and come back to it.

I found it easy to find the second time though. When you leave Vasud and come to the crossroads to Mularn and Aud, turn left and start heading to Aud. When you reach a point in the road where a small jut of land extends into the water to your left ... stop. Turn and face the mountains.

You should see 2 large fir trees just behind the high ridge of land across the road. That's where the depression is.

Once there, I had to wait for the Dwarf Skeletons to come out. Other skeletons appeared every once in a while, so I quickly disposed of them. Then almost at midnight, 2 Dwarf Skeletons appeared in the bottom of the depression.

I had to kill both before I got the dust.

Hope this helps.

Finding the right place

This quest was frustrating for me because of the crap directions given here. If you walk along the road looking for a hole on the right as suggested here, you wont see it. This "hole" you have to go uphill to see. Between Vasudheim and Audliten, north of the road walk in the hills but watch out for the dirges. The location of the center of the hole is 28520,8491.

I aven't completed this quest yet, but from what the guy says, you have to have to be wearing/using the item given to you from when you joined your profession while killing the skeletons. Otherwise I think you won't get the dust.
Runemaster Side
# Nov 10 2001 at 10:57 AM Rating: Decent
I was able to do this quest as a lvl 10 Runemaster. Though the Dwarven Skeletons were gray to me, I did get the dust.

My reward was +2 Peity gloves.
Race specific?
# Nov 09 2001 at 9:24 AM Rating: Decent
Is this quest race specific? I'm a lvl 10 Norse Healer and would like to do this quest.
Thanks!
A note

I have read on another board, and this could be why some people cannot get it, but it is a quest for dwarves only... A race specific quest.

Just a thought there.

Quest limit...
# Nov 06 2001 at 2:59 AM Rating: Decent
I figure I would try and see if I could get this quest but he wouldn't give it up to me at level 12 so this quest limit has to be between 7-11 or maybe 7-10...

Outsiders ...
Hunter...
# Nov 05 2001 at 4:10 PM Rating: Decent
This quest is a pain if you're a hunter. In order to get the dust you must have your "quest" weapon wielded, which in our case is a bow. Makes it a little tough to melee. :) I picked up the dust later but haven't turned it in yet to see what the reward is. Currently the description lists only Healer as the class, which obviously is untrue since a Hunter can do it.

I recieved a Dwarven glima (the one in the recent patch) for my lvl 6 thane. Its a +3 dexterity ring, i think it is different for different classes. Easy quest even though the skele's gang up on you all you have to do is kill one before you die and you spawn at you bind point with the dust in your inventory.
