DISCLAIMER: Your Steps and Tasks may be different

This is a Dwarven only quest.

Frimeth in Vasudheim is concerned about a hole that opened up in the earth, sucking in the lifeforce of fellow dwarves, leaving them mere animated skeletons. He can use the dust of their bones to fashion you an item.

Frimeth says, "Your assistance [is needed]!"

Frimeth says, "A [scourge] has presented itself at a location not far from here."

Frimeth says, "Aye! Tis a place where many of my kind have met their deaths... [A hole] in the bottom the earth that sucks the last bit of life from all dwarves who fall dead upon its barren ground."

Frimeth says, "Beware [the hole's power], for should you fall dead yourself you may rise up as one of it's minions."

Frimeth says, "I could tap this power for you and [fashion an item] of great use. That is if you are brave enough to meet this terror."

Frimeth says, "Aye! If you could bring me [dust] from one of the [dwarven skeletons] which walks there, I will create it for you."

Frimeth says, "This dust can only be taken while you wield the gift bestowed to you by your house."

Dialog box: Do you accept the Hold of the Dead quest?

You have been given the Hold of the Dead quest.

Frimeth says, "Aye, the evil lay not far from the main road. Look in the mountains to the west soon after day turns to night. Wield your house gift now and go seek the skeletons, or [tell me] if you need a new one."

Frimeth says, "Perhaps you should check your backpack. I think I see your house gift sticking out of the top of it."

And if you do not have your "house gift" Frimeth will give you a new one. =)

[Step #1] Slay a dwarf bone skeleton while wearing your House gift. The evil lay not far from the main road. Look in the mountains to the west soon after day turns to night.

The Dwarven Bone Skeletons spawn at night in a depression off the main road. When coming from Vasudheim, at the crossroad going to Mularn and Audliten, keep going straight west. The depression is very specific and contains fragile skeletons (which you can find all over the area at night) and Dwarven Bone. Not all bone skeletons drop the dust.

There's another camp near Fort Atla that has Dwarven Bone Skeletons at night, along Seikothna Initiates. Those skeletons also seem to have dust (when fighting them normally, you sometimes get a message that the bones turn into dust).

You receive a dwarven skeleton dust from the dwarf bone skeleton!

[Step #2] Return the dust to Frimeth in Vasudheim.

Frimeth says, "You have returned to us, and in good order! Have you brought with you the dust of a dwarven skeleton?"

You give Frimeth the dust of a dwarven skeleton.

Frimeth says, "You have done well. Here is the reward I have promised you! Fare-thee-well in the rest of your travels."

You receive Dwarven Boots of Air from Frimeth!
You have finished the Hole of the Dead quest.

This is one of the worst quests for a character below level 10 to attempt to do solo. There are several things working against you during this encounter.

1) Location. The encounter is at a Darkness Rising dungeon entrance (28.5k, 8.5k East Svealand zone). There are aggressive mobs roaming nearby (demon-tainted stags that are Purple to a level 9).
2) Time. The Dwarf Bone Skeletons spawn between 12:00 a.m. to 05:00 a.m. ingame-time. There is not much time available within those hours to allow for a respawn, in case you mess-up or die/release.
3) Fight two at the same time. Even as a solo, you pull one of them and another comes. I know that you only need one dwarven skeleton dust to complete this quest, but if your character can not handle two of them at the same time, i suggest either getting teammates or do this at a higher level.
4) Finishing Hit. In order for the quest item to drop from them, the finishing hit must come from your House gift (for example, the Bow of Winter is a House gift for Hunters). If you do not have your House gift for this quest, you are not able to complete it.

The Dwarven Bone Skeletons are Yellow to a level 9. I attempted doing this solo and died.

I tried again as a level 10. I pulled one with a bow and switched to spear for melee. I let my pet attack the other, to keep it distracted. When the mob that I attacked was down to 10%, I switched to Bow of Winter, dropped back for some distance, and shot/killed it. I got the quest item and ran back to Frimeth.

Upon completion of this quest, I was rewarded no experience and no coins. I was rewarded the Dwarven Boots of Air (100% quality leather). This item was useless to me, since level 10+ Hunters can wear Studded armor.

This quest is not worth the effort to complete below level 10 solo. I suggest that you exercise your quest-remove ability and skip this quest.

The Hole is at the location given here. You can just barely see the Audliten Tower down the road and it's behind a big Fir tree just across the road from a short spur sticking out in the lake. Just after midnight, 4 Dwarf Bone Skeletons spawn IN the hole. Took 2 kills for me to get the dust. Piece o' cake.

I have a few problems with this quest. Im a Dwarf Runemaster (7 lev). I got the quest but I dont get any dust from the skeletons. I think I have kill over 20 skeletons and no dust. Am I missing something? Whats my "House Gift"? Is it my Runestaff I got from my trainer or do I need something else? Can I use magic to kill them or do I have to kill them with my staff only?
I hope somebody got some advice. Thanks.

Did you kill the correct type of skeleton? They only spawn 3-4 each night, you may not be in the right place.

House gift = weapon given to you when you joined.

You HAVE to USE your house gift on the killing blow, how you get that far is up to you.

Maybe not - I have only killed the small skeletons called "************ skeletons. I think Im the right place, there is also Ghouls and some Nordic Dirge (Spiritlike Norsemen). But is there another kind of skeletons? (Dwarfbone or something like that?).

Did this last night with my 8 berserker. Easy kills on the dwarf bones. Only had to kill two to get the dust. Too bad the ring only improves Dex. A strength boost would have been better.

Some of this I repeat from earlier posts:

Loc of hole is 28500, 8500.

Healer will have to wear the Eir's Circlet. With todays patch you can get a new one if have gotten rid of your old one.

Wait until 2h game time in the hole and kill dwarf skellies until you get a dust.

Upon return you will receive the Gloves of the eternal +4 Piety item.

Helda in Haggerfel also does a dwarf only quest. There are two parts to it. If I remember right it starts in Mularn or Jordheim.

lvl 6 Skald got ring
# Jan 01 2002 at 10:10 PM Rating: Default
Did this today with my lvl 6 Skald (Dwarf) and got the ring. I was with a group and we happened to be passing through in the mountains while hunting cats :-).

The hole is easy to find, when you get to the direction marker where the road T's coming from Vasud, there is a field with a bunch of mixed monsters. Face NW and head over the hill. You'll find a "hole" in the hill.

The skeleton's spawn there and will gang up on you, so be careful ;-)

How to get dust
# Dec 28 2001 at 1:00 AM Rating: Default
To get dust, you need to;
1) have been given this quest
2) be wearing the circlet given to you when you became a healer. The quest giver tells you this.

Hi all: )
I am a 23 lev healer that has had this quest in his to-do-list from level 6. I just want to get it off my listing.
I have killed many Dwarven Bone Skeletons using my hammer and no dust. GRRR A wast of time at lev 23 hehe.
Can I use any hammer on the skeletons or do I need my first free hammer from my trainer??
RE: Can't get dust : (
# Mar 10 2002 at 5:34 AM Rating: Default
You need the free hammer given to you at lvl 6 from your instructor!

Quest is dwarf only.
Other races cannot get this quest as far as i know. There are a couple of quests around that are dwarven only (aegen....)
Thousands of years ago man worshipped cats. Apparantly cats haven't forgotten.
Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.

People tend to forget that there are factions in DAOC.
Perhaps there is a way for non-dorfs to raise there faction enough to get this quest.
