Shield or Parry
# Nov 04 2001 at 9:02 AM Rating: Default
For those that can train in Shield would it be better to train in shield instead or parry. Shield will also increase your chances to block an attack and give you some styles as well. The only downside I can see to shield is that is uses up endurance that might be better used for a weapon attack. What do you think?

my shield does more dmg than my sword, but its so slow, i cant imagine the hell of being a polearmsman

It might partly depend on what styles you want to use....
[midgard styles below]:

2 hammer styles are based on parry by you
1 is based on a block by *anyone*

2 axe styles chain from a parry by you
1 is based on a block by *anyone*

1 sword style gains from a shield block by you?

(can't be bothered to do left axe/spear etc.)

So it might depend on where you intend to get your weapon skill up to?

I've seen good arguments for:

**1-handed weapon:

shield + parry ('best' chance of avoiding melee hit per skill point invested? [2 skills to 15 is cheaper than 1 skill to 30!])

shield only (more styles, better chance of blocking arrows/bolts?)

**2-handed weapon:

parry only (more damage?, less defence)

parry + shield (below avg. defence, switch to shield for charging pesky bolts/arrows)
Weapons and Parry

Parry works with ALL weapon types. Blunts, blades, two handed. They all parry.
Blunts?
# Oct 29 2001 at 12:39 AM Rating: Decent
Can you parry with a blunt weapon? We have a lvl 14 Warden who was not aware that she gets this skill and worked up blunt instead of bladed, should she now work up bladed instead?

About animation for parryin, think there is if you are using 2handers.

My warden uses blunts and parrys just fine. Don't waste your points on blades.

My warden uses blunt weapons and parry's just fine. It's just a form of block and no special animation goes with it. You do hear a "TINK" of metal striking metal. Don't waste points on blade if you are using blunt.

Yes, all weapon types can parry.

I wouldn't work up bladed yet. I believe that parry works across all weapon types for the classes that can use it.

Don't waste any points in bladed until you are sure, and you might want to save some points you might be considering putting into blunt until you are sure.

Basically it comes down to picking one melee weapon type and sticking with it. No class gets enough points to really be able to put some in a secondary weapon class outside of a ranged attack maybe. As a Warden you will want to pick one weapon and stick with it while working up your other skills for healing and/or buffing.
Waste of points for BM
# Oct 26 2001 at 1:23 PM Rating: Default
Dont waste points in parry if you are a BM.

Base parry gives you 5% chance of parrying. I made a BM and brought parry up to 8. Which, due to the .5 gain per point, gave me a 9% chance of parry. That is nearly useless.

Also, for the short-sighted. Parry will not help you in 50% of your RvR encounters (casters). You are wasting points that at higher levels will be better sued on offensive skills. As a Blademaster you will not be the main tank very often, so don't worry about parry unless you plan on soloing most of your life.

Put points into your weapon skill and Dual Wield as those will rarely be useless in RvR or PvE (I say rarely as I am not sure about the possibility of invuln shields at this point, but even if they are used they likely will be limited time period no attack shields, so parry becomes useless in that situation again).

Turftoe sounds kinda unexperienced, and a little confused...

Parry is an EXCELLENT skill for a Blademaster to put points into... not all of them in, but at least some. The thing is, no, we Blademasters are NOT primary takes like Heroes... but we out-number Heroes almost 2 to 1 on most servers... and we are near the toughest fighters out there, so we WILL be doing some tanking.

And anyways, would NOT taking damage be a good thing? Of course... and in terms of RvR, who are the people protecting the casters? The Fighters... so, you take less damage from them, leaving more to take the casters out. Boom, you win.

So, when thinking about allocating points with a Blademaster, DO think of maxing out your weapon, DO think about training Dual Wield, and also, DO think about saving some of those points (not all, at any rate) into an under-rated skill called Parry.

That's pretty short sighted.

At level 50 when mobs and other realms are hitting you in combat for 500+ damage, you will want that extra percentage. Even if you only train it to 25 (at level 50), that gives you 17.5% parry rate (using the currently believed math). So almost 1/5th of hits are parried.

The other 4/5ths of the hits could be mitigated by evades or armor absorption, giving you just that much more avoided damage... not to mention the great combat styles available that must follow a parry. Who wouldn't want that?
Warden Parry
# Oct 24 2001 at 3:43 PM Rating: Default
Wardens receive this at 15. As we don't get any Evade, plan on putting a few points into it :)
Thanes also get this
# Oct 24 2001 at 9:23 AM Rating: Default
Midgardian Thanes also get Parry as a trainable skill from level 1. It's been quite handy so far and I intend to keep training it.

Mercenary
# Oct 23 2001 at 8:44 PM Rating: Default
Well as a merc i have to keep sword maxed and i like to keep duel weild up for the styles and chance to hit w/ 2 weapons more often but as said parry seems to be a useful skill any mercenarys know how i should distribute points to parry duel weild and slashing?
Wardens?
# Oct 23 2001 at 12:11 PM Rating: Default
I have read that Wardens gain Parry. Is this true, or another vicious rumor?
Shield

Yopu can parry with 2handers as well. Many heros are using the Celtic Spear (2hander) and Parry combo.
Do you need a shield to parry?
# Oct 21 2001 at 3:34 AM Rating: Default
This one require a shield to parry, or can you also parry with a 2 handed weapon or a dual weapons?
Parry a must
# Oct 19 2001 at 9:00 AM Rating: Good
This is one of the best defense tactics I have seen in sometime, please put points into this if you are going to b fighting on the front lines, saves you alot of hitpoints , the mobs miss me quite alot and it looks really cool when you perform this skill. Great for those of us who like to get right into the fight, also with a heater shield, you can block upto 3 different mobs hitting you at once, this allows me to solo 2 to 4 mobs and not take as much hits. Oh and I am a 13 Armsman(Circle of Power)Percival, Albion realm. Have fun.
Great for Blademasters
# Oct 17 2001 at 1:04 PM Rating: Decent
I am a blademaster and this skill is great for our class. We dont get to wear the heavy duty armors so take advantage of the defences you get. I am currently lvl 12 and have 9 points in this. With it i ethier evade, parry, or the mob just misses me more than they hit...ive seen up to four consectutive parries in one fight. Moster swung at me 13 times...hit me 3 )

I have been puting points into this skill and I have noticed in battle the higher the points, the more often I step out of the way from an attack. I think this is a useful skill.
Frair as well
# Oct 16 2001 at 5:58 PM Rating: Default
I am a Frair and I have recieved this skill as well, haven't tried to train in it yet, but I assume I can since I have it. Just thought I would mention it since it isn't mentioned above.

Skalds too

The Midgardian Skald can also train in Parry
