lol! the charm aint going like 50 instru, lvl50 mobs! omg how dare even say that?! I have 50 + 15 and I can keep lvl54 mobs and lvl56 mobs resists quite alot, with your form I could keep lvl65 mobs, witch I cant.
stop whineing
# Oct 06 2002 at 3:52 PM Rating: Default
Sup NOBS... Minstrels can charm all kinds of things, and it goes of your instruments. So if your instruments is at 30 you can charm lvl 30 mobs. And get this if you have a +5, you can charm a lvl 35(cause thats 30 +5) mob. The charm ISNT just humanoid either. If ya want to whine about a class GO OUT AND PLAY ONE FIRST, and if ya dont like it DELETE her(cause ive never heard any man complain so damn much.

Strategies
# Mar 25 2002 at 2:58 PM Rating: Good
I thought I'd also toss out a few strategy tips as a level 26 minstrel. I won't comment on RvR as I've only encountered what i've read on websites and speculation, so I'll stick to PvE.

For starters, I'd like to dispel the myth that sorcerers and minstrels can only charm humanoids. It's complete bunk. The first level song you can only charm humanoids, but you get to charm a new type of mob for each new charm you get. What I've been able to determine is that your second song you can charm animals (bears, boars, horses, etc). The third level song allows you to charm insects (ants, spiders, etc). I'm not sure what the fourth level song gets you but I believe you can charm moor boogeys (whatever class of beast they are). I believe the final level charm allows you to charm magical beasts such as giants. I've heard more then one report of minstrels soloing Ravenclan Giants by charming one other, but I don't know from personal experience.

I find that charming is a great way to solo. The most recent length of solo xp'ing was in keltoi. One of the best tactics I found was to charm a keltoi visionary; they not only hit decently hard but if you drop down to less then half life then they'll actually stop combat and heal you. You'll find your confusion song works expertly with this tactic. Let the charmed mob engage first, then come in with your shouts and styles, then hit confusion. Your mob will usually be the one that's beat up the most, and you continue doing this till your charmed guy dies ,then just charm another.

On a side note when you have a mob charmed try to avoid using another pulsing song (mez, running, heal song, or power song) as you'll have to re-charm the mob every time you start the other pulsing song, which would be ok except you pound on the drum or strum the lute each time too .. which gets annoying to the people around you and lower the condition of your instrument.

The only real downside to charming mobs that i've found is that other people who haven't played a minstrel or sorcerer tend to be a little flakey when it comes to charmed pets. I've largely stopped even trying to get a mob to fight with a group as everyone seems to want to kill it. I dunno what it is but most people I've encountered hate charmed pets (Which is probably why there are so few sorcerers and even fewer cabalists).

Nice charming tips.
Most people don't like charmed pets in groups because it nerfs xp, but for Minstrels (who, seemingly, have absolutely no devotion to their pets - "Oh, my pet died - I'll just charm a new one") it is an excellent way of soloing.

As I have said, having a group without a Minstrel is like skydiving without a parachute - maybe it CAN be done, but I sure don't want to try it.

My necro cares about pets, ever seen a necro fight a green without a pet? I can do it with charges and procs but damn is that pet a good thing. I don't know where I would be today without him.

Pets have feelings too... except if they are a Mindless Minion or something with no brain, in that case kill them as you please :P
Help
# Mar 03 2002 at 9:36 PM Rating: Default
For mintrels, how long so they have to wait to do there damage songs again?
RE: Help
# Mar 05 2002 at 12:24 PM Rating: Default
I believe the delay is 15 seconds

If you are soloing, I'd suggest soloing like this (especially if soloing yellows) :

Arm the flute. Make sure your DD shouts, the Stun, and the Mezz hotkeys are on the same bar, and if you can put then in a 1-2-3-4 or a 5-6-7-8 order, it's easier.

Get near the target, and hit the keys in this order : Mezz, DD Shout, DD Shout, Stun

The Mezz Song will start and, while it's playing, you can get the two shouts in AND the stun (for that extra second you may need).

While the target is mezzed, sit down and regain some mana and wait out the 15 seconds until you can DD shout again.

Then, reshout with both and take him out with your weapon, shouting again when available.

Using this method, you get two extra DD shouts in before actually engaging your mob, which can mean all the difference, especially when fighting higher level mobs.

Stand a bit further back and don't bother stunning, then you can use the stun in combat to get a couple of free hits in.
Minstrel Diversity
# Feb 19 2002 at 1:27 PM Rating: Decent
Never underestimate the Minstrel. In the beginning, I thought my character (level 27 now) would be just this sorry jack of all trades. However, just consider this :

1) Multiple mobs, I can mezz ALL adds. Especially if there is a cleric with us..wait until all mobs aggro, mass mezz and I individually remezz. This way, you are only ever fighting one at at time.

2) Power Song. Clerics LOVE me. I have no problem grouping wherever I go.

3) Speed Song. The entire realm loves me. Almost as fast as a horse, considering horses take specified routes and I can cut through forests and across plains and direct route to where we have to go.

4) DD Shouts. Amazing. Granted, only every 15 seconds, but these shouts have been the difference between someone dying and living on so many occasions I can't even count.

5) Confusion Shout. Immediately pulls aggro off of your Mage or Cleric that is getting smacked. After you do this, have the Cleric and Mage run away from the mob in different directions. The mob will randomly aggro, and when it aggros on them, it will walk their way, then change direction to aggro on someone else...effectively, it NEVER truly reaggros on them.

When a Cleric is in the group, I almost never use my Healing Song, and even when I solo, I normally sit and run my Power Song and by the time I'm at max Power, my Health is back, too.

They are difficult characters to play...don't get me wrong...but when you can throw up the speed song, run in to a mob of three, stun then mezz one mob, run back to the group (using the few pulses from your speed song), turn around and stun/mezz a second mob, nobody in the group even comes close to dying and you get GREAT xp and bonuses.

Sounds like alot of you haven't played a minstrel at all. Have you any idea how important stealth is in RvR? Combine that with a speed song and two dd spells, a stun, fairly good melee abilities, and other fun stuff... I can understand why some would find the minstrel weak at first, it isn't a very good PvE class, but don't discourage others with alot of talk about something you know nothing about.
RE: n00bs...
# Jun 13 2004 at 3:32 PM Rating: Decent
Stealth is usless with them stripping the RA Mastery of Stealth with the upcoming 1.70x patch. Plus even with high stealth you'll be seen miles away by any decent assassin.
RE: n00bs...
# Feb 11 2002 at 8:14 PM Rating: Default
I seriously hope you don't think you can go stealth with the speed song on. It says you can't. Hate to break it to ya, but when you is stelthed, you is gonna be as slow as everyone else, unless it changes at higher lvls.
RE: n00bs...
# Nov 23 2004 at 4:42 PM Rating: Decent
You can't, infils would be gods with a minstrel bot for speed if that were to happen. I would like it for my infil and brother's minstrel to duo in thid/braemar but nope, doesn't happen

Of course I don't think that. and I won't comment further since you clearly haven't tried a stealther yet...
Mythic
# Jan 13 2002 at 1:28 AM Rating: Default
Make a bard of skald. Trust me on this one.

Skald = melee
Bard = music

minstrel = half as good at both music and melee but can only use one at a time so is half as effective.. compare their abilities and youll notice only stealth is what a minstrel gets.. they suck hard. Stealth is useless as it was not made for someone who plays songs.. you cannot play a song and stealth of course so its useless basically. We also get the low hit points of a rogue.
RE: Mythic
# Jun 07 2002 at 12:38 PM Rating: Default
Who said that the melee or music of a minsrel was half of ANY class? I have went toe to toe with a skald on several occasions. Every time I have we both get down to a hair of health. The winner is usually the one how hit first. We get every song that a bard gets except the end one.
RE: Mythic

RE: Mythic
# Jan 13 2002 at 1:30 AM Rating: Default
Yeah, I wont make one until they are fixed.. which means a few years for mythic. They are still giving classes who dont need buffs buffs.. like heroes and ignoring the assasins and minstrel to name the most prominent.
Charms
# Dec 17 2001 at 4:04 PM Rating: Default
I'm looking at the charm line and thinking...the way experience works, being multiplied killing oranges, reds, purples. That a minstrel can charm at 7 a mob 5 levels higher and kill purples. It would slow down near lev 13, but then you get a charm thats 7 levs higher and can do the same thing. Do minstrels level like no ones business? Whats the catch?

griff..
RE: Charms
# Dec 18 2001 at 7:36 AM Rating: Decent
The catch is that you can only charm Humaniod beings and they can't be greater than your own level. so if you're level 7, you can only charm humaniod creatures (such as bandits) up to level 7. Its also not a permanent charm, you have to keep the charmee targeted so when the song pulses next you keep charm
RE: Charms
# Dec 30 2001 at 9:54 AM Rating: Default
Actually depending on your skill you can charm yellows and low oranges, but they tend to break the charm after one or two pulses so you have to use them quickly
Yes

The confusion chant affects players, works great on magi types as it randomizes their targets and prevents casting.
minstrels and rvr
# Dec 11 2001 at 9:04 AM Rating: Default
how come minstrels cannot charm rvr players, thats just bs? also, the minstrel charm should not be limited to humanoid beings, i can never find a humanoid to charm in battle, so its useless. on the other hand, hibernians can charm animals, and they are everywhere! and another thing...does anyone know if the confusion line affects rvr players? i just went pvp for the first time last night, with my 30 minstrel. i had a load of fun being able to run fast and stealth.
RE: minstrels and rvr
# Dec 27 2001 at 2:58 PM Rating: Default
Sorcerors have the same charm type spell except they just have to cast it once and it stick, but they too have to find a humanoid type mob to charm. For having the ability to charm a "pet" that is your level thats a freaking good ability, no matter if a pet is hard to find.

No, confusion does not seem to have any affect in RvR; and charming a Player character in RvR would be BS. You think everyone gripes about the healers ability to stop players, what would people think if an enemy commanded them to kill their friends. Not gonna happen.

And, Hibernian characters can not charm animals, they summon them just like evey other pet class except the sorceror and the Hunter who Can charm animals.
Actually...
# Dec 05 2001 at 9:37 AM Rating: Default
You will have 2 DD spells at anytime, each can be used once per 15 seconds, I also find that using the confusion chants+2 dds will draw aggroe onto me from cleric about 95% of the time
Auto Upgrade
# Dec 03 2001 at 2:02 PM Rating: Default
Yep, that is the way it works for anyone who is new. It automatically upgrades. You do not change the icons on the hotbar out for an upgrade to a song/spell.

Actually, each damage "song" has a delay associated with it, so it can still be very useful to use all of the damage skills consecutively.

New songs
# Nov 12 2001 at 9:10 AM Rating: Default
Just a little info for newbs, I just figure dout that unlike EQ, which is the only other MMORPG I played, you dont get a new song every lvl, eventually the stronger verison of the song will just be in the place of the old song. For instance at Instrument lvl 2 we get Dischordant Note, then at lvl 7 we get Dischordant Tone. What happens at lvl 7 is Dischordant Note basically dissapears and is replaced by Dischordant Tone. This happens with all spells and songs from what I've seen so far, but bear in mind I've only been playing a couple weeks ;)
