Engage + Shield

First off, about Shield. The amount of points you put in definately determines how much you block, along with the type of shield and your dexterity. I am a level 40 Paladin with 33 shield. I have had the same shield since level 32, when I had only 24 points into shield, and I have noticed a very big difference in the amount of times I block. Using a buff bot I have also noticed that with higher dexterity I block a **** of a lot more often. Now about engage, someone said it's not useful when you're solo? YEAH RIGHT! It had saved my **** so many times. I get low on hitpoint, I put up engage, then I twist heal chant with endurance chant (since engage drains endurance constantly) and the mob gets blocked while I sit there and get healed, then when I'm ready I start attacking again. I suggest poping up the engage when you're at about half health, since there is a delay and you get hit 2 or 3 times before the ability takes effect (because the mob has been hit recently). Now I have a question for some other people. If you have any +'s to your shield skill, from say spellcrafting or realm rank, passed 50, does it help you block more? For instance, is 50+11 shield any better then 42+8, or does it stop at 50 for the blocking whether its base or total skill?

This is to the person who says. I have never seen anybody spec'd in such away as to have 42+ shield an 2handed.

Apparently you have never rolled a Mid Warrior. In Midgard a warrior can spec in 50 sword, 50 shield an use the styles he gets from sword with a 2handed weapon, an on top of that he can spec parry if I'm not mistaken to 24, maybe higher, an still have points left over for thrown weapons. Now. whose lying an whose not in the know ;)

Blocking is base on shield skill, when you hold a shield (any class that can) you will have a base of 5% chance to block (against yellow con mob), then each skill point you put in will add 0.5% chance to block.

Thats mean even you max out your shield at lv 10 you will have only 10% chance to block so you can say oh i doesn't block that much with my shield skill maxed. But it is not how close the skill from max level its how many points that really count

Once you get to lv 30 shield you will have a chance to block about 20% against yellow

finally if you have 50 shield you will get 30% chance to block from yellow.

It work different from weapon skill which determine the damage by how much closer you are to the max skill. Only those who really invest points in shield will see the different at the later stage.

Shield styles can be really useful, I can charge an agro mob stun it and do position base combat style, yes the mob will continue to face you even when they are stunned but they didn't actually rotate yet so you can still do the style successfully. Even more shield is consider to be a crush damage so if you are holding a slash weapon you can still use shield for additional type of damage. Beside the new patch said we will block more often in RvR :)

i have 16 points in parry and lvl 39 shield and lvl 42 slash, im a 42 armsman, and i can solo oranges too easilly, but against reds and such i block a lot more often but still lose, basicaly what im wondering is, why do i block a much higher percent against reds and purples than against yellows? ill block like a quarter or even a half of the attacks from the trees yet against pygmy goblins i only do a quarter at best.. any ideas?

Blocking and Parry are apparently based, in part, on a comparison of dexterity between the attacker and defender. Goblins are likely a fair bit more dextrous than trees, which means that you will block less against them, even if their con is lower.
Effectiveness of shield styles in RvR

I'm a level 50 shield hero from Hibernia, and my base shield spec is 42, 52 with bonuses. Make no mistake that the level 42 shield slam stuns for a complete 9 seconds against enemy players in RvR, that is if the player hasn't been stunned prior to the attack, in which case you would get a diminishing return on the stun duration. The style uses a considerable amount of endurance, but at the same time, the non-styled attacks in conjunction with slam style during that 9seconds makes up for the end you would use if the player had not been stunned. The best part is, if you block/parry just before you stun a player for 9seconds, you can do a block/parry style 2-3 times in a row before the player regains movement, in which case, the endurance consumeing shield style actually saved you endurance by allowing you to use opening based styles, as opposed to anytime styles which use even more endurance.

As far as i know all of youse guys who are sayin that shield stun sucks.. just get the SLvL(23) Hit-From-Back shield stun and use that in RvR and tell me how bad shield styles suck.. They are one of the best things ever created, the lvl 42 one (use anytime long duration stun) will be great when i get it(im 33) just to tell you how great it is, i was on my zerker(44) and we were doing 1v1 duels in hadrians and i dueled a 42+ (was yellow to 44) paly, he shield stunned me with the 42 stun then pulled out a 2h swrd and killed me, i hit him ONCE before i died ONE time.. now pelase tell me how suck that is..

I have never seen anyone spec'd in such a way as to have both 42 shield, and 2-handed highenough to do any real damage. Every large weapon user I've ever met went parry as a secondary.
So, either your full of it, or you met a guy that basicly spec'd to fight someone just like you.

The stun times are something like 2, 5, and 9 seconds. 2 seconds doesn't sound like much, but it's enough in RvR for tanks to close, casters to target, and that extra time will keep the target in range long enough for the archers to pick him off. If an assassin gets stunned like this, he'll probably die, especially if another stealther does it before he gets his backstab off. Don't forget, though, that the next hit breaks the stun. So if you're in melee, and you stun and then hit immediately, it will look like you didn't stun at all. This is probably why newbies think the stun time is so short.

If Long Duration Stun would incapacitate for, say 5 seconds, then you could stun and stun and stun until you run out of Endurance.

with Disable i can hit with my melee weapon before the stun wears off, and the shield has a considerably worse delay than my weap.
short seems to be about 2/3 of this, which means its still worth it because im hitting him with my shield(which does more damage than my faster weapon), and he is stunned, and thus not swinging at me or moving, until it wears off, basically its like you switched off to a bigger slower weapon for one hit, and got a free miss out of your opponent.
if yer really wondering on the durations, try stunning a mob, and backing off right after it hits. i had a problem once t a low level cuz i hit one with my shield(using Stun) when i was trying to pull him elsewhere and he stayed for several seconds(and as a result i ended up having to kill two mobs instead of one).

I was just wondering about a couple of things concerning my lvl 37 paladin...
First of all: How high lvl can the guard ability be raised to, currently i am specced 19 in shield (21 with bonuses) and my guard is level 3.
Secondly: Does the parry ability offer any posibility of blocking for a group mate (like guard) or will u be able to parry instead of block in a guard - or is the parry spec line a self defense specline only ??

I'm playing a skald and can use a shiled, but not train in it. I have a few questions about it, though

1) Does the quality of the shield mean anything if you don't spec in it?
2)Do you block more often with a better shield, or is the %chance to block based only on level?
3)Is there any reason to buy a better shield if you just have the basic skill?

shield skill doesnt affect your chance to block, it only affects your various shield skills(like engage), and your damage output and styles with your shield(just like putting points into weapons, except you can only hit with your shield using a style).
the better shield you buy, the better your blocking will be, its just like any other equipment, except that there is no way to tell it's stats(lame if you ask me, you can get it's delay if you play something that can cast and wear a shield if you block and then try to cast, but other than that yer stuck).

I'm laying this on the table right now, shield spec does not affect your chance to block. people can disagree with this all they want, but my armsman who is maxxed in shield and slash blocks the same as my paladin who is maxxed in chant and slash.

LOL, the page isnt wrong, you are:) shield skill DOES increase block chance, as well as shield skill damage,if you dont spec in shield, you should still try to find one that is the largest, because large shields have better block rates, and can block 3 mobs at once, enchanting your shield isnt a bad idea btw

If you are guarding someone, will you only block attacks aimed at them (at your own expense) or will you continue to block attacks aimed at you AS WELL AS attacks aimed at the other person?

You continue to block for yourself with the added benefit of blocking for them as well. This is a very useful skill I have found. If you have two players both with this skill, have them block for each other and stand close. You'll pound your shield in joy as you see the "you have blocked for..." messages and know that you are getting blocks from your associate. I personally like to stand at a 90deg. angle to my associate fighter which enables me to get glowing blades in each time the target turns to face my associate.
Shield abilities may suck, but shields own.

I have a hero with 12 parry and 13 shield (i am level 15) and i block or parry all the time. especially when fighting something my level or lower. Now, my wrap and stun and other shield abilities suck and i never use them,but thats not why i trained it. I defend so much with it. And it helps when i am in groups and i am pulling aggros to me from the healers, its nice to block and parry half the time when you have 3 mobs on you:D

Yea shield skills might even be useful and worth it if they didnt cost so much fatigue. The large fatigue cost per shield skill makes using the skills unefficient, best to use fatigue on taunt and high bonus to hit skills like amethyst slash. Too bad really cause the shield skills really do add alot to combat realness. BTW there is a stun slash skill that is chained off of reposte called befuddle, much better way to go since between the 2 you will get much more dmg and they dont cost nearly as much as most shield skills, stun seems to last about one full round. (reposte is lvl 18, befuddle I think is 29). I would say that specing in shield adds to % to block, have 32 shield skill on my 41 armsman and I block ALOT, average is definately more then 2 or 3 times per decent length fight, especially if you count in guard blocks. Think that the % block is based on 5% + .5%*skill lvl + shield bonus, thus a shield with 25% bonus and a shield skill of 32 will have a 46% chance of block against a yellow (the same lvl as you, there are weaker and stronger yellow cons), then adjusted by con, higher % for blue and less % for orange, red, purple. After paying close attention to blocks while soloing I have found that it holds pretty close (on average) to that percentage .
Bonus on shields

As quite a defensive paladin Im concerned how bonus on a shield works.
Say you own a large shield with a 30% bonus on it, you may have your shield capability maxed out to level 50 and let us only see the shield part of the whole defense (that is roles in evade, parry, shield).
This will result in 50 * 0.5 = 25% blocks plus 5% basis percent equals 30% of all the attacks you block.
Now to the bonus: does this 30% bonus on the shield mean that you will block
<30%> + <30%> * 30% = <39%>
where the <> indicate the total possibiltiy to block?

Great question, im not sure exactly what the formula is for the enchantment, but not many do, all i know is that if put on armor it makes you harder to hit, so it seems reasonable to guess that it affects your block in someway but i HIGHLY doubt that a 30% bonus means a 30% bonus to block.

Your chance to block is based on a couple of things for sure includng your level vs your attacker, shield skill, shield bonus, and dexterity. There are probably more but we will never know for sure. I see guys all of the time saying "I never put more points in and I block just as well as ever." Well of course they do. If they had chosen to put more points in they would be blocking better than ever.

I've noticed that Parrying also gives you options to protect other party members, and both shield and parry guards may be used at the same time, even on different party members. I did this last night with my 14 Armsman, and it was amazing. If I was properly positioned my party took almost no damage, even for multiple pulls. I was planning to move away from shield and sword to poleaxe, but I was so impressed with the defensive advantage that I think I will stick to sword and shield, and continue to invest points in shield and parry.

Is there anyone out there with real experience on the Engage style. The information listed about the style above isn't the outcome that I am getting. Best case scenario is that it is a taunt, but I can't be sure because I am never in the position to turn heal chant off with my paladin...

Hehe, don't listen to them. Here is how engage works (and trust me, this is coming from 45 Thane and uses that every day):

If you have a target and you engage it (shield must be equiped) then you will BLOCK ALL the attacks from that target. Supposedly the real chance of blocking when engaged is 90% * quality * condition of the shield however I never seen that fail so I think they changed that to all attacks.

Engage WILL save your life because this is only thing you can do against archers solo. If you are shot by the archer a quick /face and engage will save your life because now you can just walk to him. You will block all his arrows.

There is alway downside. When you engaged you lose end at a constant rate (about 2-3min for the while bar at lvl45). Also you deal no damage at all when engaged.

But take care, when you already in melee and start engage. You will get 2 or 3 hits before it works. So don't think its broken. Only that is not useful when you'r already low on hitpoints and try engage in the fight. The two *free* attacks will kill you then.
And beware, if the healer or the nuker casts a spell on the mob you're engaging, it will aggro and you can forget the engage.
So coordination is needed with the group.
And I survived an attack from a purple saracen scout by using it, the group killed him and none of us needed a rezz.
(And I love the blocking-noise)

It is sort of a taunt, but works as it says in the description. If you engage a creature, you concentrate on your shield and don't do any damage to it but it will attack you and all your damage comes off of your endurance. I don't think you'd ever use this while soloing, but if you are in a group and there are add's, you can tie them up with this attack while others take care of business and then come and finish off your creature. Similar to a theurgist using a root spell to freeze an additional creature coming in to attack your group.

I'm not getting nearly the amount of blocks that the percentage suggests. It could be that I am using it while others are attacking the same mob. I was hoping that Engage could be used like the defensive disciplines in EQ. I will have to try Engage against a single mob with no one hitting it...

Its quite simple, when u click Shield, is it in the Defense part of Melee? MELEE so its actually a melee stuff, u want to use ur shield to fight? go ahead and add spez points into shield, if u dont and just wanna block? then dont put any points, i doubt blocking has anything to adding spez points.

I think what he was trying to say was that speccing in shields makes you better at melee attacks with your shield, not blocking.

I wholeheartedly agree.

If it werent thus, the shield skill would have far too much attached to it to not make it unbalancing(and also completely worthless for non tanks to use a shield).
your blocking is based on your shield(as well as some other minor factors, of course), just like your defense is based on your armor. thats why shield spec isnt what is required to USE shields.
anyone can use a shield defensively, you have to put points into it in order to use that defensive item offensively(and quite effectively, i might add)

I don't remember exactly when you get guard (5-6 I think) but what it does is quite simple ... you pick a party member, and you set your guard on them. You/they have to stay close for this to work.
Once in a while ... you will stick out your Shield and literally block (not reduce) an attack on the guarded character.
This is very useful on either Berserkers, shadowblades or if your caster likes to get their nose dirty ... the caster ... but they have to be close to you ...
2 tanks Duoing set guard on each other ... works great too ...
Anyway ... multiple possibilities ...

at lvl 9 i trined my shield from 1 to 5 and i notice a huge difference in the amount of blocks . dunno if its a lvl thing but it there is a noticable difference . ill run it with thrust since training pole arm gives no extra damage just techniques . i ran through 8 with a wiz and cabablist in the tomb and with the 1h/shield combo with sting i think it is for taunt they could chain nuke or the wiz could pull then resume nukes after two hits with no agro to them .**** we only died to trains 2x and made a lvl in a couple hrs . does anyone know what is good vs what kind of armor ? i hear the one , not slash or thrust is good against plate but whats slash and thrust good against ? im albion and i looked through the midgards and noticed they cap at chain and way later then albion armsmen . i just happen to have a nice 1h thrust off another char is why i went thrust and i have a rL friend 26 armsmen that has been told the hammer one is best vs plate but who cares if only one of the classes in the 2 realms use plate against albion ?
any RVR vets out there can help ? im running 4 chars up and they are all getting into the teens . the cabalist is about useless i think cept for his ghetto heals, my cleric is pure heals and buffs , my wiz and armsman will be my main offensive weapons .....

i actualy do think training any combat skill dose increase you max / min damage (just wanted to point out)
When refering to polearms if you use say, a halberd (slash / polearm skill) then:
your polearm skill dictates your MAX damage
your slash skill dictates your MIN damage
and i also belive that yes your shield skill dose add to your % block rate

I not totally sure but i beleave that alot of thes special also effect blocking hits for other party members like casters. I was in a fight and the caster in my group moved between me and the target and when the target went by it said that i had blocked a hit ment for them. There are alot of abilitys that are not listed for the shild that should be here based on them not comming up as special moves but abilitys in the listing in the game

I havent put my points into shields past 8. I'm a champion and I block just as much as always..in fact I still use only numb1 and the dmg output minorly increases as I lvl.....but still block just as well if not better with each lvl. I guess possibly its your call if you think the new attack styles are worth the points.

Duh... If you don't put anymore spec points into shield then you will "block just as much as always". The point being, that you if you put MORE spec points into it you will have a better chance of blocking each attack and therefore block MORE.

This off the top of my head. I know I saw it posted somewhere but its 5% to block attack with a shield just having one. Then every point into it give you a .5% more. So if you have 2 points in it then you have a 5% + 1%= 6% to block. I could be off some but I very sure that what was said.

You're talking about parry, but maybe that's the same thing with shield I don't know...

I've read a testimonial that a high-level armsman boosted his shield skill up many levels all at once in one of his upper levels and didn't see his character blocking anymore than he used to.

Seems to show that for shields, your ability to block is based on your character level, not spec level. You spec in a shield to get styles, not to block better.

Note: this might be a bug, since so many people expect it to work with specs, if so a patch might make it so that shields blocks are affected by spec levels in the future... The game is new so drastic changes might occur pretty frequently for awhile.

My main is a Friar, that can use a shield, but i dont (just staves). But I got my Armsman up and he is doing very well, with just a shield and sword. I got my shield up to 7 and got engage and numb. Numb isnt a very good stun, but pretty good damage. Engage can only be used in a group. But the Shield/Sword combo is very good. I just cant wait til i get the crossbow.

Which classes can train in this skill? It says some can use but not train, which makes me think they can not use special attacks....

Stuns ARE usefull

Just an FYI, Even the first stun is quite usefull in a group, it stuns the enemy for one second, and it takes about 3 seconds to set yourself up to use the stun. So you effectivly reduce an enemies ability to do damage by 1/3 for the combat. I would imagine medium and long duration stuns are awesome...

Actually you cannot keep the enemy stunned 1/3rd of the time, because you can only stun the enemy twice before you start getting a message that the mob is no longer stunnable. I have seen other posts stating that you could only do it once to a mob, but I got numb last night and it seems to work twice before i get the this doesn't work anymore message. Numbs stun helps a little, but the suprising thing is it deals more damage than my equally specced 10 37 thruster.

the other thing about the numb stun effect is it taunts. that one second of stun helps increase your hate and pull mobs off your casters. coupled with some of the crushing styles you could keep agro very easily off your nukers and clerics to the point where they can chain cast all day and not get hit. a chanting pally can shield bash, and crush things to his heart content. and never lose agro. some times a bad thing though.
