i'm a new thane, i just switched from hib. my stormcalling is 5 yet i only received 3 spells...thor's minor bolt, thors's vigor, and thunder's bash. if my skill is 5 shouldn't i be getting all the other spells up to and under skill 5?
RE: spells

its becuase thors minor bolt and thors lesser bolt are the same thing so less bolt takes the place of minor bolt so that means you only get 4 spells.

The Greatness of Stormcalling
# Feb 02 2002 at 4:21 PM Rating: Default
I am a level 35 troll thane. I have stormcalling maxed so far and am planning to get it to at least 48. Stormcalling is a tremendously effective skill. With my stormcalling and hammer near max I can steel the agro from a warrior several levels higher whenever I want (though this usually isnt a good plan).
For Soloing, stormcalling will get oranges down to 2/3 health before they come to you, and yellows to 1/2. If you are soloing greens to get fast money, you need not even hit them, they die from stormcalling. Basically, all you have to do is cast your mjollnir spell, cast your normal dd, cast your instant dd, and when it is close up your point blank AoE.
Using this tactic i can easily solo oranges and have not died once in all the hundreds of oranges that I have soloed.
Next, I have noticed that the application of stormcalling to RvR has not been noted here at all. I must say that stormcalling is incredibly useful in RvR and that the thane plays an essential role in all engagements. You can stand inside keeps and cast AoE spells at enemy armies. You can take out archer guards with your spells. In field battles you can chain cast your mjollnir, hurting dozens of targets each time. And, of course, you can charge and melee along with all the warriors and berserkers, since your melee capabilities are almost as good.
I really must say that anyone wishing to play a thane should invest a lot in storm, it is after all the unique spec of the thane, if you wish to ignore it, play a warrior instead, who will be much stronger then a thane with no storm.

Good luck to you and have fun

I just want to tell that i've played a 36th season armsman on percival and it suck a lot. Now, as a 12 thane with stromcalling maxed and sword near max, i can solo even more than with my armsman. Taking an orange it's not hard ... losing like 1/3 of Hps. Actualy, with my armsman, i loose up too 2/3 and sometimes a bit more and im wearing the best armor ( in plate ) that i've found so far in barrows ( 74 AF all over the body ...con yellow to me ).

Im realy impressed by the thane ability and i wonder how it will be when i got Mjolnir call ! ! ! :P

Okay, I have been a thane since day one, October 10th, it was the earliest I could get it. I got to the class thane within about an hour, because I didn't know much. But, I haven't really passed level 8, because I keep changing servers, and making new characters, for, the old names aren't any good. In my opinion, I believe are one of the best characters in DAoC. They can go either solo, or in groups. PLus, with the ability to cast spells, both for offence and stat raising, you don't need to focus as much into power. Uhh, well, that's all I have to say.

Thanes and Axes?
# Jan 24 2002 at 2:05 PM Rating: Default
I'm just starting out as a thane (lvl 6), and have been using axes, rather than hammers. I haven't seen any other thanes here talk much about using axes...

What does everyone think? Are axes inferior for thanes, is it just a preference... What are the pros and cons for using axes instead of hammers?

lots of good info here - thanks

I'm a level 18 Norseman Thane who uses an axe. I like breaking norms <grin>

I've noticed no disadvantages with this compared to troll thanes using hammers. In fact, I've gotten better axes than hammers during my career. Make sure you hunt werewolves in Myrkwood around level 15 in a group. They drop the Noble Wanderer's Axe which is very nice all the way up to level 20.

I've rvr'd a bit on an armsman and my infiltrator and my friend's wizard, i've noticed in rvr the penatlies and bonus's to weapons vrs armor are useless because most battles are over in 5 secodns and almost NEVER 1 on 1, so what's the point? I have a dwarf thane and I went axes because it's more fitting for a dwarf, mi hear there's mroe axe drops, and all out I like axes better than hammers, so far I find nothing wrong with it.

RE: Dexterity
# Jan 29 2002 at 1:21 PM Rating: Default
Dexterity is of almost no use to Thanes and other HtH fighters. Except for the spear, all HtH weapons use STR to determine Weapon Skill. DEX may have some effect on Blocking, but I have seen no evidence of this...
RE: Dexterity

Dex helps you hit high con mobs more often.. very nice when yer in a group of lvl 44 +'s as a lvl 40 getting 12 mil exp per kill and the pulls keep flowing. Dex is good, sure its not the best but its nice to have.

Ok keep this in mind...I'm a NEW thane so other new thanes do not copy this because it may be a bad template, I'm all study here and no expirience as of yet. I've played on all the realms and tried the majority of classes on each but they have become boring after level 9ish. Now I made a thane, I thought it would be boring like the champion but now I'm level 9 and well it's still hella fun cause I can solo yellows with ease and I hear i'll be good in rvr to. Here's my template plan, alot of study has gone into this so here it is:
44 hammers
46 stormcalling
42 shield spec
10 parry

this here seems awesome to me because in rvr i want to take hits therefor use a shield instead of parry (am i wrong?). Now heres another question, should i keep hammer maxed every level? I want to keep the ability to solo yellows/oranges all the way so whats the best way to do that? what should i put points into early on? thx.
RE: My thane
# Jan 29 2002 at 1:28 PM Rating: Default
Keeping Stormcalling maxed is imperative..it defines your class, and does incredibly well in RvR. As far as choosing between Parry and Shield, both seem important. I prefer using a shield, because by using a weapon and a shield, you can get magic adds from BOTH. However, I have noticed that all of the high level quest Hammers and Axes are Two-Handed...though a decent One-Hand 12.3 DPS hammer with good adds dropped from a monster in the Spindallia(sp?) dungeon recently...
RE: My thane
# Apr 02 2002 at 5:20 PM Rating: Default
actually keeping sc = to your level is imperative only up to a point. my thane is specced 43 hammer 46 sc 42 shield and 17 or so parry, can't remember the numbers off the top of my head but anyway. Slam is indispensible doing small scale rvr, the 9 or so second stun can make all the difference, more so than full spec sc, especially since you'll easily reach 50 sc spec with rvr bonuses and item bonuses. Also with such a high shield spec you'll be blocking attacks left and right, it's quite gratifying to block half your opponents attacks at times.

See what you think:

Stormcalling 46
Hammers 34
Axes 34
Parry 32
Shield 20
(this leaves enough for 'whirling blade' in swords but does it really matter?)

You don't get the last three of Hammers or Axes, nor the last two of Stormcalling, but... You do have your choice of weapons against mobs (bones v/s shell) and, depending on your taste, using shield v/s two handed...

Using both shield and parry you will avg blocking/parrying almost half the time you get hit.

Anyways, this is what I have planned for Rokal, de Troll on Percival...
His current setup is:
Stormcalling 2
Hammers 2
Axes 3
Parry 2
Shield 4

Initial 30 put in con, dex, and quick, 10 each.

Newly converted to Midgard. Sick of Albion.

Only max one weapon type, dont do both axe and hammer. Also never put into dex and quick. i suggest 10 str, 10 con and 10 peity. Peity affects how much damage your spells will do and how much power you will have.

44 hammer
46 stormcalling
25 parry
35 shield

This is what I call the RvR template

in RvR it's usually too frantic to pull off long style chains which is what the 50th skill for hammer is.

At 45 stormcalling you gain your last upgrade to Mjollnir (AoE spell) which will be your most used spell/skill in RvR. The 46th skill lvl will gain you the final damage buff which imo is priceless.

35 shield will get you a positional style with a long duration stun which can be exceptionally useful. Only problem is I believe that melee style stuns are broken atm.

25 parry just for ***** and grins.

Best Thane Template (Hammer speced)
# Dec 14 2001 at 2:17 PM Rating: Default
Guys, this is coming from a level 41 Thane so I know what I am talking about. We are a great class that great both for RvR and PvE. We work well in groups and solo equaly as well.

I will spec my Thane based on the following template and I highly suggest thanes out there to at least give this template some thought -- at least if you using hammers.

50 Hammers
46 Stormcalling
26 Parry OR 23 Parry
23 Shield OR 26 Shield
(depends if you see yourself using shield often or not, I suggest 26 parry since it will be always in effect)

This information was taken from DAoC Catacomb's character builder, so if their point calculations are wrong don't flame me please -- I checked it and it looked correct to ME.

Why not push Stormcalling to 50 or at least 48 for the best spells? First of all from 46 to 50 it will take you 194 points that can be used elsewhere for better results (parry/shield). By not pushing the last 4points you will lose only 1 bolt and 1 str buffs. That bolt is not a big loss because you will still have previous (very strong) version as well as it is never used in RvR anyway. In RvR it is almost always targeted AoE and insta bolts -- trust me. Loss of 12 str is insignificant when buffed with just your str buff yous str (assuming troll) would be around 212.

You want parry high--that is self explainatory since I will be using 2h weapon at least 50% of the time. However you do not want to neglect shield skills. Engage style is a must have against archers, and BEST hammer style is based of BLOCK (no shield = no block). So if you plan to spec 50 in hammers you will be waisting points unless you put them into a shield too. Otherwise you can just get items that give you +hammer and have the same effect.

Just a little food for thought and looking for you high level players for more imput.

Your idea isn't bad at all. I started my thane this morning, and just made lvl 12.

I love the thane more so than my lvl 43 Shaman. Thanes own, completely :)

I am building mine a little different, well, because, I'm a little differnt.

You being a "bigger" than myself, what do you think of this?

Stormcalling : 50
Parry: 41
Hammer: 41

The reason i have parry and hammer even is, to my knowledge, to be most affective with a weapon type, your training needs to be 2/3rds your lvl or greater. 41 meets that, but doesn't open up the "impossible" combos that come from the higher skills. Also, i find parry to be invaluble.

I quote:
"This ability grants you a base chance of 5% to deflect blows with your weapon, modified by the level difference between you and your attacker. Furthermore, each point you put into parry adds .5% chance to deflect blows."

That means with a parry of 40, my base parry is now at 25% against yellow cons. If the formula is originally set to be 5% vs evens. This is HUGE!! To be able to parry 25% of every even con??? (remember at lvl 50, all my rvr enemies have no choice to be even or lower (meaning i will parry more))

Well, those are my thoughts :)

Very nice setup, nicely put. I would go with axes instead of hammer since the 50 style only requires a simple 29 style instead of a 21+34 style shield block dependent chain that 50 style hammer has.

RE: what is AOE
# Dec 14 2001 at 1:15 PM Rating: Default
AOE or AE refer to "area of effect" spells, i.e., spells that affect multiple targets within a prescribed area. There are two general types of AE: "point blank" spells (the Thunder series) don't require a target -- they radiate outwards from the caster and affect all mobs near the caster, "targeted" spells (the Mjollnir series) radiate outwards from a targeted mob and affect all mobs near the target.

at level 40.5 you get 20 skill points to spend, and every half level after that you get half of your level in skill points

So you can end up with 50 50 23 (28 I think)

Explaining Skill points
# Nov 29 2001 at 11:41 PM Rating: Default
By the way 50 50 23 IS ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET..

You get your level * 2 for skill points..

Ok let's calculate..
the sum of 1 + 2 + 3 + 4... + 50 = 50 * 51 /2
times 2 = 50 * 51
= 2550

to get a skill to 50 it cost
2 + 3 +4 +5 +6 + ... + 50 = 50 * 51 / 2

see ? you get 2 50 ( but even then you can't because you don'T receive 2 times your level for level 2 to 5. )

You have to calculate first.

50 stormcalling
50 hammer
23(?) parry

Give this troll a nice 2h hammer and blammo, a veritable fortress of pain and suffering.
