Food for thought

Started playing scouts during the beta-test, they were "gimped" no question of it, started off doing extremely high damage then someone whinged and it got heavily nerfed; scouts were then 10x harder to kill anything with.

Current scout is level 14, his longbow skill is 14 and I will be keeping it specced so it is equal to my level permanently. I'm wearing a set of placyercrafted leather armour which I spellcrafted myself on another char, basically has a bunch of dex, quick, longbow, and thrust boosts on it and has been enchanted. So in total my longbow skill is 14+3.

Now, the last time I played a scout I had thrust as my secondary skill and was really ticked off that I did absolutely squat damage in melee - not even *plausible* damage, let alone decent. Seemed speccing the skill was a waste entirely at that point, but that was quite a long time ago now. My speccing this time around was heavily influenced by that although I've since seen the game has changed significantly.

So this time around, I haven't specced thrust at all since level 1, it's still 1+1 and will remain that way till I hit 20; at that point I will be respeccing from shield into thrust and thats solely because it'd be nice to do a little more melee damage for the rare occasions when I need to. I'd like to kill things in close-quarter combat a little faster. My shield is specced to around 8 and I believe stealth is somewhere around there too, I did initially spec shield as my secondary and no stealth because I wanted to avoid damage in melee as much as possible - it's worked nicely, I don't take a beating, but the trade off is when I have to resort to fighting with my gladius its slow, I still have the advantage and do more damage, but its annoyingly slow.

With my current spec and gear I kill yellows in no more than three shots, the first being a critical, more often than not I kill in two. Blues are 1-2 shots, greens are always 1 shot, oranges around 3 shots, sometimes 4. In each and every case the mob is *always* dead before it gets near melee range, I outright kill with the bow.

When I reach level 20 I'll be respeccing the points in shield and I'll be making my secondary skill stealth, tertiary thrust, and finally using the remainder in shield; but I certainly have no complaints about damage as far as PvE is concerned, and the character isn't gimped in any respect of the word because hes out soloing constantly and outdoing quite a number of players you'd assume to be more damaging classes. On a sidenote, the downtime is beautifully short, I can't wait to get my next level as I then get tireless which decreases it even more, chaining yellows solidly for 10-15mins before having to rest for around 15 seconds is definitely my idea o good experience gain. :)
spec for longbow
# Aug 10 2003 at 5:25 AM Rating: Excellent
2 reasons for spec'ing longbow,
its the base dam modifier for all bow shots, basically you get 20pts of dam for every lvl you spec, all the way to 50(spec)11(bonus)4(realm) to max you bow damage, with proper bow, mind you to somwhere around a max critshot at lvl 50 of 1300pts. tho you will almost never see that much, you can test you maximum possible dam by shooting a grey with critshot, and figure your normal bow damage to equal 1/2 that. and since thats our primary weapon, keep it at maximum.
second reason is the critshot itself, as you lvl you will see crit shotIII, critshotIX etc etc, if you dont spec it to maximum, you will not hae the highest critshot multiplier and be doind considerably less dam on crit pulls than you could, which will mean hard time gettin kills in RvR, and hard time soloing anything atall, normally, on most yellows, my critshot is 1/2 thier damage, then 2 or 3 more shots to kill thembon way in, they never touch me.

now for that rant somone has up,
I have personally(with dam bonuses) 1 shto many casters, never anyone except cloth wearers, pop a shot on em, that drops blade turn, back off, restealth, sneak in and see if he put it back up, if he didnt, well, gnight caster, i can easily one shot a yellow con player cloth wearer for 750 dam, now how many low con casters you know have more hp than that?

true point, scouts melee is lame, look at styles closely, nearly nothing with high dam bonus, and most use alot of end, but, I DONT MELEE, crit pul and 3 shots kill just bout anything i care to try, melee is for finishing off the ones i missed a shot on, and if you are smart, when you miss crit pull, just run, easier to sit 30 sec for end, than 4 min for hp.

as far as greater range, well, i get 4 shots on a normal pull, and i can hit a caster outside his nuke me range, but he normally closes enough to nuke me, so i use rapid fire and interrupt him every time. speed can be lowered with realm points, mastery of archery decreases bow speed for each lvl of its spec, you can get a max lvl heavy longbow to shoot in 2 sec with no extra bonuses(depending on quick bonuses and realm increase) which means on rapid fire, you shoot as fast as you pull arrows, which is 9 shots on a normal pull. and when you duel that ranger, or hunter, thier bows are less range and less dam, switch to rapid fire and start shooting, if you let him get those shots in on you, you are going to get interrrupted and die
Answer to your RvR questions
# Aug 10 2003 at 5:04 AM Rating: Excellent
This be a bit long, but should answer your rvr questions.

First off, scouts are viable in RvR, i have a blast, and i do get quite a few kills, both grouped and solo. simply learn you character and use his/her advantages against your enemy.

scout setup, well, for RvR you need to "gimp" yourself a little for exping, keep longbow at maximum(equal to lvl) stealth with bonuses to equal lvl and rest in thrust with minimum for shiled, if you want to, i didnt. after lvl 35 bg, stop stealth, and lvl your thrust up so you can get to 50 faster, get thrust to 34 then stealth to 34 while keeping longbow maxed and rest in shield.
now, in each bg i had max longbow, max bonus(its 1 pt per 5 lvls +1 as i recall, or something near that) and stealth with bonuses equalled my lvl(actually, in 35 bg it was 29+8) dont worry about thrust, because, if you inmelee, most will quickly dice you up, and that isnt due to weapon skill, its due to haveing really really poor styles for causing damage. but dotn worry, ow more than equals that out.
stay stealthed if you are not in a group, in lvl 19 bg i easily 1 shot kill nearly any cloth wearer. but i had a heavy longbow(lvl 26) and in every bg i used a bow well over my lvl, the dam difference is huge. 1 shot kill for 699 in caledonia, dozens of 1 shot kills for abermai, remember to use the high end arrows, and i would suggest learnign enough fletching for this, it makes it alot cheaper. thidranka was a blast, but i had a hard time on keep defense with the wall setup, was not very scout friendly.
when you hit lvl 35 you get rapid fire, thats your ace in the hole, kill any caster thats running round thinking of nukin someone. you can fire any bow faster than he can cast, he will die every time, use critshot, the hit rapid fire and start pincushioning him.
the donts of RvR, Dont take on a caster with pet, sometimes you win(kill caster before pet gets to you) somtimes you dont, i found it difficult at best. if you want to kill a heavy tank, use critshot and blunt arrows, then run, 10 sec stealth back up, circle and hit him again, you can kill any tank this way, just dont let him catch you, he will cut you up.
see a bonedancer, leave him alone, tho my favorite thing for him was woith group, i would slide to a flank, and when the BD sent his pets in, i would start shooting, kill him while his pets are occupied, he goes down fast, just dont solo him.
All in all, i had a blast in all 3 (didnt do 29 bg) bg's and in frontiers, well, stay in group, you are a valuable asset in takin out enemy casters, and in scouting.
as far as exping solo, takes a bit of thinking, and research, but you i solo yellows, chain pull 4, then rest for end, as an example, i could kill 1 orange tree(hammadryad) for most of my end, and a bit of health, shoot 4 times and melee, and get 12mil exp(lvl 38) or i can shoot 4 yellow trees, chain pull, in same amount of time, at 6 or 8 mil ea, no loss of health, and 30 sec recovery of end. thats twice the exp in same amount of time, so dont think soloing oranges is fastest exp, for scouts, 4 fast kills of yellows(crit shot and 2 more arrows each) is much more efficientuse of our time.
the hardest part is to acually find good things to kill at the lvl we are. some suggestions, dont try and solo anything that moves fast, that means less arrows on the pul. always search for dam bonus, blunt on skellys is my favorite, since skeletons of all types are slow movers, and blunt is a huge dam bonus, 20 pct, i crit shoot for 500 and get 599(99 dam bonus) for blunt arrows. others, dunters are great for 33 to 37(3 camps, each camp is lvl higher at the first house to right of ent into lyonesse) trees, fellwods suceptible to pierce, and hammadryad to sl, there are fellwoods of all types througout many zones. the trees at the road right at the line between sal plains and camp forest were great exp adn very fast easy kills. look up maps, look for open areas you can solo pull and kill, tombraiders in sal plains were a staple, etc etc. keep eye out for groups, grouping is always faster than solo, but solo is still effective. Regardless of weather you think you are effective in group, you still have a job to do, being puller is great fun, long as there is a tank to take agro, if you are haing a problem, use crappy low dam arrows, or i would switch to critshot to do 1/2 dam pull shots, letting tank get agro easily.
all in all, i have had a blast playing my scout. i have been effective and fun in bg, and have solod seeral of my levels when there were no groups. using a good bow and high end arrows you can easily kill most enemy class characters, but not all, we are indeed weak to a healing tank class, and pet casters, but thats part of game, no-one shoudl "own" all classes.
as a parting note, my most satisfactory solo kill, was finding a SB, stealthed on mb and standing a few ft in front of him, i sucessfully executed a stealthed crit shot, and dropped him 75pct of his health, then shot him second time for kill, boy was he suprised!!!
thanks, and hope to see you in realm!

My final spec for scout
# Jun 04 2003 at 5:08 AM Rating: Default
hehe, i was wanting to dump my scout but now i think i might stick with him, lvl 11 10 in longbow, 7 in thrust, 7 in slash (stupid mistake when first making him, going to respec it at 20), 3 shield and 3 stealth. Is my guy too badly speced or should the two re specs help this? my spec at lvl 50 was going to be 50 Longbow, 42 Shield, 34 Stealth and 20 thrust, the shield was so that i could stun them and run to get some distance for arrows and the thrust so tht i have a chance in combat? should i keep to this plan or not?

I'm a lvl 28 Scout. In rvr I get owned by Lurkees and SB's, but I can solo oranges and yellows of all clases if they are alone. And when it comes to PvE i don't agree with what people say, i was in barrows with a lvl 34 arms, and i was doing the same amount of damage he was with a regular shot. Just something to think about for all the people who say that scouts are useless in PvE

Greetings - I have read all sorts of opinions on scouts, but in the end, must go by experience. Scouts are a good char, not severly gimped, but they are somewhat. I know they were nerfed after many other chars complained - isnt this always the way? Why did they listen to them?

Fact; Scouts can only level on their own with difficulty. Fact; A Scout cannot one shot Sh*t in RvR - unless hes severly hurt or has rez sickness which means hes worth no realm pts and is a cheap shot you shouldnt bother with. Anyone who insists you can one shot is either lying or a braggart - I've heard em all...sigh...

Fact; a scouts melee is lame, his shield is much better except for the little fact that you run out of Endr to even use it, and being almost wholly reliant on the longbow - it should have greater range, be quicker, do more damage or a combination of the above to balance him out. Elvenwood arrows at twice the damage of the FFB's or new Flanged would be nice too.

They love to make a big deal about the scout and the proud history of the English Longbow, thats because it was awesome and killed people - I would like to see Scouts in this game given a similar opportunity.

I have many chars in this game and none but my scout is so nervous about taking even a yellow - if you dont get 2 or 3 good arrows in him you could easily die.

I would like the the Scout to be the detested, cowardly distance assasin he has always been accused of in history.....:)

Regards to all!

Oh and one footnote to the above...

I have had many Bow duels with Rangers and must begrudge the fact he shoots much faster as well as interupting my slow shot with the arrival of his arrow...:( Our distance difference in practical terms (battle) is almost negligable.

Any, slight, greater damage I do is more that offset by the number of arrows he can put in me in much quicker time.

Not much of a reccomendation for the most feared Archer in history - in fact the scout in this game tarnishes that image.

O well - I'm off to be machine gunned by Rangers, backstabbed by lurkeen or just plain blasted by casters who always seem to have my range...

Good Luck All....:)

hello i just would like to say a few things. first in the BG i haved played with many Scouts and never have i ever thought a scout is gimped infact i belives scouts are the best rvr types in Albion besides albion. 2ndly i would like to direct this at the person that posted that if he thinks scouts are sooooo gimped then why did he play it all the way to lvl 50 when he would have known scouts are gimped far before that. I believe he is either an idiot or a liar. This person is named 50usetobescout.

Doesnt matter if ur harder to see unless u run into another archer. And assasins have see hidden anyways. Basically this is the function of stealth: The closer it is to ur level the faster u move in stealth.

For RvR: GET REALM POINTS QUICK! After getting like 30 or more, head back to a trainer and start TRAINING! Make sure you get Volley because once you shoot, it hits the group :) There are a couple more like Mastery of Stealth, Bow, and stuff. Go for everything you can!

Longbow dmg
# May 13 2002 at 11:34 AM Rating: Default
Question...since the longbow is a thrust dmg weapon. Is the dmg only affected by your longbow skill, or is there some bonus added if you spec in thrust weapons as your melee skill?
RE: Longbow dmg
# May 27 2002 at 9:11 PM Rating: Default
Points into longbow will increase damage as will dexterity. As for a bow being a thrust weapon, that's not entirely true....unless you ask the Runemaster who just took my arrow in his kiester. Points into thrust weapons only affect melee skill.

On the other hand, the types of arrows you use are important when you consider thrust/slash. But this is only important for bonuses vs. certain armor types. Slash being good vs. leather, pierce vs. chain, etc.

Hey all...
I just wanted to ask (i know this has nothing to do with Albion only).
In wich realm is the best ranger (bow user), is it Hibernia (ranger), or Albion (Scout).
And wich one of them makes the most damage with the bow?...

Thanks.

Well, i say Ranger is best, last time we were a Paladin and me (armsman) and a Ranger (Hibernia) shot down the Paladin, i got the Ranger, give him a hit, then he runs, ok i run after him, suddenly this ******* casts a self only spell and speeds up...... i stand there with my Eyes ******* wide open, this guy Owns me, i cannot get him , never, he always can run away from me, no chance, RANGERS ARE BEST CAUSE OF SELF ONLY SPEED UP!

Scout because its the pure bow class unlike hunters (beastcraft) and rangers (pathfinding) all we get at 5 is longbows and no magic.. so they are if you use common sense the best

I have a 24th lev scout and I tryed for 3 days to rvr in the 20-24 BG, with little effect. I was useing a silveroaken long bow with the best arrows and even with my crit shot i didn't do more then 80 dmg( btw my longbow skill is a 24 too), and I did upwards of 60-110 with a normal shot. well after 60+ deaths and only 28 rlm pts to my name, im am tired of the scout class, unless someone can tell me what is up. Have fun playing a scout, i did till now

Right now I have a lvl 21 scout on Kay with 225 rps, i don't have a problem dishing out damage to casters or tanks. For a while i used the silver oaken long bow and the footed flight broadhead arrows, and I averaged about 150 on the low spectrum to tanks and 200 - 360 on casters. You shouldn't have such a problem with your scout, although I would recommend a bow upgrade, try the keltoi bow drop, its not too much better, but the extra dmg helps out. :p

Heres some Tips for a good rvr scout
Spec in Bow and put all ya got into Stealth, i would get about 8 shield and 6 thrust/slash before, the shield is for Engage, which has saved my bum from many a NS's/SB's
And remember, dont shoot at tanks, go for the good tender/jucie stuff, shoot for casters. but remember, if ya miss your crit shot, turn and sprint then soon as ya can stealth. do hit and runs on them, and if ya can follow them around till they try to cross a river, then ya can take out the tanks before they even know whats going on. And, i can useually kill a caster in one normal shot, if not i get them to 0 Life, and by that time the 2nd arrow is on the way. but remember, Haul a$$ after you shoot or your a goner. a good place to be on is On the bridge, on top of one of the pillers, kill the ranged guys first, the tanks will have a hell of a time attempting to get to you, and you can jump off and usually stealth in mid air. it allways Throws em off me.
P.S. even though i got only 800-900 RP it doesnt mean i suck, its just their tanks and mez (no fair) =/

I have a lvl 35 scout on pelinor and my crit shot on lvl 40+ is 100+. My suggestion is just give your scout time, the 20-24 bg is very low tuned. So that you wont do much damage with your bow shots or get more than 1 to 2 realm pnts per kill. Once you beging rvr with the scout that will change. So i would suggest giving your scout till atleast the 30-35 bg till dumping him. Also arrow damage has alot to do with the armor type that the other player is wearing. Goodluck

Why Waste Arrows
# Mar 30 2002 at 11:00 AM Rating: Default
On blues and even yellows at lvl 21 I just take one crit shot, drop them to half or less and finish them off with melee. It is a waste of an arrow to finish off the last 20%.

Also I use regular broadheads with some footed broadheads for when I have to hit an orange with the crit shot.

With a good shield and weapon arrows will last three times as long, and you don't need to carry as many of them. Therefore more loot to buy the next round of arrows.
