How do you actually CAST the pet. I was told I have to target the ground but I can't seem to do that and I see now slash command listed ANYWHERE for it.

Depends how you are targetting the ground I suppose... The ground target cursor is usually mapped to F5 by default (check with /keyboard in game or keyboards settings at char selection screen)...

Press and hold down F5 until you see the cursor; if you haven't used it before or just logged in, then it will appear directly where you stand. With the F5 key held down, move it, using your direction keys or mouse, to where you want to cast your pet (it must be within casting range, so do a few tests away form mobs). Once it is at your desired location, release F5 and cast your pet... it should pop up where you put the cursor...

Test it on some flat ground away from towns and not in dungeons to start with, as the pathing sometomes puts it where you didn't want it to go, or you may also get 'you cannot see your ground target' if on very uneven ground. If you get the message 'ground target out of range..' (or something like that) then use the F5 key again and move the cursor closer and try again...
