Since we're coming up on a new expansion full of new story, let's talk about some questions I have about HW.

1 - If no one has ever been to the bottom of the Sea of Clouds and returned, how was Foundation built? Did dragons do it all those years ago?

2 - Are Nidhogg's eyes still in play? Did summoning Shinryu use up all their power, destroying them, or did someone pry them from Ilberd's corpse and walk off?

3 - The whole Warriors of Darkness thing. There was a huge buildup to something epic, and then it was suddenly over. I was left scratching my head, thinking: what was the point of all that? We didn't even get a Divine Might like trial out of it or anything. The whole story arc just seemed kind of random and pointless. Am I missing something? Was there more to it than that and I just don't get it?

4 - The Echo. Who has it? Originally I was under the impression that all of the Scions had it (sans Moenbryda, Alphinaud, and backline people like Tataru) and it was a prerequisite to joining. After all, being immune to tempering is the main thing that lets the Scions fight primals effectively. Lately it seems like that not the case though. During one of the Warring Triad quests, Urianger can't understand those guys speaking ancient meracydian and "defers to those with the Echo for a translation." Krile definitely has it, and I assume the others do as well, but then I assumed that Urianger had it too. Fooled me apparently. Do Y'shtola, Thancred, Papalymo, and Yda (Lyse?) have the Echo?

5 - Ascians. Seriously, WTF?

Foundation was likely built before the Calamity, and maybe the Calamity is what caused the Sea of Clouds to be the way it is now? If you look at, say, Western Highlands, you can tell that the area was not always frozen (they tell you this in-game too), for example.

Most likely, Shinryu used the power up. I mean, c'mon, that thing is just ridiculously powerful. It takes large amounts of aether to summon normal primals, let alone something like Shinryu.

You did have your Divine Might, it was just a solo duty, but a rather cool one at that. The story seemed like it ended abruptly, but I think that whole arc was more simply to remove Minfilia out of the picture and give closer to her removal all at the same time. Or at least that's the way it felt to me. *shrug* Seems like the devs/story writers wanted to trim the Scions down to make writing a little easier, so they nixed Papalymo and Minfilia so they didn't have to keep track of as many characters? That, and with the PC going to foreign nations, they really don't need all of these characters there, I suppose.

AFAIK, the only people who currently (at the end of HW) who have it, are Krile, and the PC. During the end of the Warriors of Darkness arc when they're all teleported to meet the WoD at that circle, they're all confused/shocked as to where they are, but yet anybody who has the Echo should know exactly where they are (Krile is missing from this group at the time IIRC). If any of the other Scions have it, they sure don't show signs of having it.

As far as that being a "requirement" to join the Scions... remember that the Scions did a recruitment drive back before Baby Ifrit -- back then the Scions comprised entirely of Archons, a group of people that came from Sharlayan. They get together, and go "We gotta do something about these primals!" and so they go looking for people who have the Echo (at this point only Krile and Minfilia are known to have it). That's when they find you, the PC. Once you join.... they haven't found/needed anybody else. And besides, they do recruit others like that group with that Roeg... I forget his name. That Roeg warrior and that Elezen conjurer. I doubt they have the Echo, but yet they were recruited?

1. Bismarck also has a big hand in the SoC, essentially his aether ****.

2. Very much still in play, it's actually going to be a plot device for the "side story" (Omega) similar to Binding Coil was a "side story" even if canon.

3. We didn't really get much out of the Warriors of Darkness thing, especially because it was rushed due to development time (and you can tell they had to rush it because they split the update with the focus being Diadem 2.0) So there's a lot more they could have done, but seeing as Yoshida's mantra is "we're not FFXI" we probably won't even get an optional type of fight with them later similar to an extreme version, since technically the WoD is who represented "us" this whole time in the story, so fighting yourselves, at full power, is pretty common in Square games in order to pass x trial and would have been good but seeing as it was a STORY based trial, they actually couldn't do much with it because players tend to complain if something is slightly difficult that may halt story progress, you know, steps of faith 1 & 2 and the chrysalis. So its something you can brush under it was a fun little fight for a story based fight, but ultimately wasted potential as it actually HAD buildup, unlike many other story based fights.

5. Ascians are the fall back plot device. Everything is Ascians and I said it before and I'll say it again, I will not be surprised if one of our friends is actually an Ascian or half-breed Ascian just for the usual "twist" in the story. For all we know at this point it'll be revealed WE'RE an ascian and in a half-assed attempt (*cough alexander*) to throw back to 1.0 storyline that Ascian we seen in the MSQ was actually a time remnant version of ourself, which is why it looked our way because it sensed our presence.

Either way, at the end of HW, there's still clearly a few left since they technically don't "die."

I'm not sure about that. The Echo and the Blessing of Light (the crystal thing) aren't the same thing. Back in a 2.0 quest an ascian mentions that it's been a long time since anyone has had both powers. Only the PC, Minfilia, and apparently Ysayle (wtf?) have Hydaelyn's blessing. The others would never been in Hydaelyn's presence before either way, Echo or not.

Please don't quote me on this, but I'm quite sure I remember reading somewhere that the Ascians are being placed on the 'backburner' during the SB storyline. That isn't the last we'll see of them, of course; we'll just most likely not see them during SB (though maybe sometime later during 4.x, post-SB?).

Just thought I should mention this.

It's just so weird with the Ascians because like Hio said, they're the catchall fallback villain. Everything seems to revolve around "an Ascian did it" and "it was all part of the plan" even when it makes no sense.

It seems that whenever they need something to move the plot, they bring in the Ascians when they need some sort of Deus ex Machina type deal (only evil instead of good) where all the threads in the story are wrapped up and they need a new problem for the heroes to face.....

.................aaaaand, it's Ascians!

Hm. In a later warring triad quest Unukalhai says: Your fellow Scions have already begun an exhaustive search, but there are several sectors which only you, Krile, and I can enter without fear of enthrallment.

Does that mean out of all the Scions it's really only the PC and Krile that have the Echo? If that's the case, how can the Scions fights primals any more effectively than anyone else? What were they doing the whole time before before we showed up?

Minfilia had it too, but yeah right now it's the WoL, Krile, and Unukulhai. I don't think the Scions WERE fighting primals directly before the WoL showed up. I think they were just keeping tabs on them, warning local leaders about primal activity, and measuring the impact the primals were having. When someone with actual combat potential showed up they went for a more aggressive approach and started making you go and kill them.

I wonder how, or even if, Unukalhai is going to fit into the SB MSQ. He's a Scion now, but his entire story was only in sidequests. Is he just not going to be in the MSQ and only show up during other sidequest stories? You'd think he'd be fairly important, being one of the few people on the team who has the Echo.
