Along with the fake money version as well...

Quote:
When we initially designed and implemented the auction houses, the driving goal was to provide a convenient and secure system for trades. But as we've mentioned on different occasions, it became increasingly clear that despite the benefits of the AH system and the fact that many players around the world use it, it ultimately undermines Diablo's core game play: kill monsters to get cool loot. With that in mind, we want to let everyone know that we've decided to remove the gold and real-money auction house system from Diablo III.

We feel that this move along with the Loot 2.0 system being developed concurrently with Reaper of Soulsâ„¢ will result in a much more rewarding game experience for our players.

We're working out the details of how the auction house system will be shut down, but we wanted to share the news as soon as we made the decision in order to give everyone as much advance notice as possible. Please note that the shutdown will occur on March 18, 2014. We will keep everyone informed as we work through this process.

Josh Mosqueira and I wanted to provide everyone with a little more information behind this decision, so please have a look at the video, and stay tuned to this site for further updates in the months ahead.

End of a grand experiment I suppose. I can't say I ever sold anything on the RMAH at all, made good use of the gold one for a while, and never would have gotten some of the gear I had without it.

Anyone following this more closely? Any good or bad experiences with the RMAH to share?

Yeah thats exactly what my thoughts were on the AH the moment I found out there was one. I'll probably hate blizzard forever because of that decision.

What will I do with the 24m gold I had on my character from 6 months ago!?!

Honestly I think this is a good thing and I may jump in after loot 2.0 and give it a spin someday. Having to play Auction House Manager 2013â„¢ just to progress in Act 3+ Inferno was balls. The game difficulty was balanced around it, and unless you got insanely lucky farming butcher and the like most drops were ******

I got one item necklace was actually ridiculously good for another class and funded 2 characters with it by bargain shopping. But the AH was such a PITA to use anyway that it took hours of just patiently shopping for under priced stuff before bots snatched it.

Kill stuff, get loot you can actually use? CRAZY how do we monetize that?

Lower drop rates, require hours of game play a day, and charge 15 dollars a month to play it.

Lessons learned from console:

Quote:
This new version of “Diablo III,” for all intents and purposes, is fixed. The auction houses are a thing of the past. To compensate for their removal, the amount of loot and gold that’s dropped was reworked to be more fair. All of the patches that were applied to the PC and Mac versions have all been built into the console versions, effectively making the game more fun and worth a playthrough or twelve. A local co-op feature was also added to the game so you and up to three friends can all play “Diablo III” on the same system at once.

I have it on PC haven't played it in pretty much forever. I am actually tempted by the console version... that said, rewarding them for sucking on the PC version by buying it twice doesn't seem like the thing to do

While it definitely sounds WAY better now, I probably won't be picking it up. Everything I've heard about the story says it was pretty terrible, and I doubt my enjoyment of the game would be too great without that.

That said, I'm sure my enjoyment of the game would be FAR greater now that the AH is gone.

Talk about taking a massive sh*t on Jay Wilsons chest. Since he was removed er.... stepped down on his own terms... pretty much all the major selling points he introduced have been removed or reworked.

To bad you can't really fix the cheezy WoW-esque scenery, and lame *** story though.

Wait... there was a story?

Yeah, it was pretty .. bland. Luckily in my past I never played D1 or D2 for their story, but more to just wipe out feilds and dungeon dive.

I'd be fine with the story if you didn't have to play it 4 times over to reach the end.

No kidding. The entire point of the game (to many, many people) is to go through it multiple times and then do boss runs so what difference does the story even make. The mechanics and core gameplay are what ultimately matter. The mechanics were awesome. I felt that the combat was extremely fun on my barbarian main and from the little bit i played on monk.

I would have preferred some way to make your character unique via a talent tree or something similar, but the skills were fun IMO. I realize a talent tree is pretty boring at this point in gaming, but i don't think what they did was the right move either.

The core gameplay (kill monsters for loot) was completely ruined by the AH and the fact that the loot was all very MEH to begin with.

If a person is only interested in playing it through once id say by all means go for D3 because the first playthrough on normal, though easy, was pretty damn fun IMO. I can't comment on the quality of the story because I didn't listen to/read a word of it.

Really? That was my excuse for re-installing it the other day, I wanted to see the story. If I have to play through it more than once to see it all, ***** it.

No no, sorry not like that. You play it through once on easy to see the story, to reach the level cap and/or experience stimulating gameplay you have to play through the same story multiple times with the same character.

IIRC the cut-scenes and whatnot don't even show your 2nd, 3rd, 4th time through.

Edit: To be fair I've heard they've improved gameplay from when I quit playing. My biggest grip was with the endless kiting that started to become commonplace (for my witch doctor at least) somewhere around the middle of hell difficulty. I've heard rumor this was largely dealt with?
