It's Halo meets Borderlands, with a dash of MMO thrown in for flavoring. So far it's pretty fun, but there are some strong indicators that gear at max level is obtained by reputation and quest/PvP grinding, which is an experience I'd not care to repeat. Outside of the main story quests, there are smaller kill/fetch/explore quests available in the open playpen areas. The PvP is your standard Halo-style 6v6 domination or TDM, plus a FFA mode and one other that I haven't unlocked yet.

I rolled a Titan since it appears to be the most meat-shieldy of the three classes, and I don't have the patience for "finesse" gameplay. All weapon types are available to all classes, so if you want to play a brick sh*thouse with a sniper rifle, or a fragile spell-caster with a shotgun, there's nothing stopping you. The only differences between the classes are your grenade abilities, your special nuke ability, and a few passive buffs.

Anybody else playing?

I've been thinking about it. I don't have any of the new console to play it on yet. Does it have world PvP?

It seems like you spawn into area maps from what I've seen on Let's Plays, so that doesn't seem like it would be conducive to world PVP..

If anyone finds a good (pc) game with realm v realm pvp. Please report in.

Are the graphics for Destiny as realistic as their adverts seem to make them?

Yeah, my old Warhammer Guild moved there, but it didn't last (the guild). If I recall, it was the quality of the pvp/rvr that was the issue. But maybe they just scattered (ESO, Dark Star etc).

There's no WPVP in Destiny. It's all contained in standard FPS-type PVP battlegrounds.

I'm playing on PS4. It's really fun for me, but it certainly deserves a lot of the criticisms it's getting.

It seems like they got the gameplay and aesthetics down and then were like "oh ****, we need a story". I never really connected to any of the characters. The Halo franchise always had at least enough story to carry you through the campaign, but Destiny has very weak narrative, and most of your missions are prompted while you're in a ship flying to the destination (hiding a loading screen, I'm sure).

I'm having an absolute blast. I just wish that the story was more substantive. It feels like basically a proof-of-concept for the series rather than an actual stand-alone game.

Boss fights are unimaginative. There's one in the first Strike you do that is great, where it's a giant robot tank and you can blow up its legs to reveal a weak point or blow up one of its cannons to limit its abilities, but for the most part, bosses don't really have many mechanics. High-damaging ranged attacks and instant-kill melee range attacks. Find cover and pump damage into the weak spot, fight off recurring waves of enemies. No real change in mechanics as the boss's health drops. No additional mechanics on Heroic mode except they have massively more health and there's no auto-revive.

For this game to be what they want it to be, they are going to have to be more creative with boss fights instead of really prolonged bullet-sponge fights with nothing interesting to do except avoid getting one-shot.

If you purchase it digitally for 360 or PS3, you can upgrade to the X1 or PS4 version (respectively) for free up until mid-January. So, if you were planning on getting a new console over the holidays, it might be worth picking up. Characters carry over, but there's no cross-platform play.

I love the Titan's Defender subclass. I'm working on a Warlock, and will try out the Hunter too at some point, though it honestly doesn't interest me too much.

Defender is really great. I can throw down an indestructible bubble as my Super. You cannot fire at outside things from within it, so you do have to duck in and out of it if you're shooting at stuff. Also, enemies can come inside the bubble and attack you. It has sufficient drawbacks that it's not too overpowered, but what is really great about it is using it to revive a teammate. I can't count how many times I was able to pull off a clutch revive as the last man standing in a Strike mission. And, it can be insane in Control matches in the Crucible. Throwing down the bubble on a control point and forcing your enemy to come inside and engage in close-quarter combat is awesome. I like to spike a grenade down and back out just as they enter.

Also, Defender's melee cooldown is pretty crazy. If you kill an enemy with it, you basically get an overshield. Later talents increase reload speed while the barrier is active, and make the barrier regen.

I've put more hours into the game since Tuesday than I care to admit. Level'd a hunter to 15 first day, then decided to try warlock. He hit 22 or 23 last night. Finished the "story" if you wanna call it that and am now in the "grind strikes all night for rep/marks" mode. Still enjoying it basically because everytime I get a minor armor upgrade your brain goes "well you'll probably get another one in the next strike!" I've almost maxed out the first warlock tree and will probably try the sub tree in the next night or 2. I've even dabbled into the Crucible some and actually enjoy it. And I'm usually the person that avoids PVP like the plague if I can.

On PS4 as Drulian if anyone wants to team up.

I'm boywithoutaspoon on PS4.

I mostly do PvE but I do like Control in the Cruicible. I really want a Capture-the-Flag mode.

Officially addicted. Level 27 Titan. Cleared some of the raid with a group on Twitch (EdEMonster, Bewbydewby, HandicapHOBO), and it was really awesome. The bosses have interesting mechanics, you have to work well together, it's everything I wanted the base game to be. If they could just make the strikes more engaging like the raid is, I'd easily give the game an 8.

I still think that the story needs to be better integrated into the game. Yes, item descriptions and Grimoire cards add significant depth to the lore, but you can't even access the cards from the game, you have to use the app or go to the website. Sure, item description lore worked in Dark Souls, but to me, Bungie had a strength in storytelling in the Halo series, and I'm just not getting that here. I get that they have to tell a story where everyone is playing a different character, but there are like 8 cutscenes in the game, and you never really feel anything for any of the characters. Dinklage's Ghost isn't doing the game any favors, either. Sure in Halo Cortana did much of the same, providing exposition as you mow down enemies, but she was engaging as a character.

The other complaint I have is that the story missions aren't varied enough. In Halo, missions would have you doing different things even though it all boiled down to "run here, push button, fight enemies". Sometimes you'd be in a vehicle mowing down waves, sometimes you're dealing with snipers, sometimes you grab a turret. In Destiny, it's 95% using your three weapons. There are vehicles, but you only use them maybe once. There's a level where you get a power sword and go third person and whoop a bunch of dudes, and then you never do that ever again. Integrate that into future levels. Put more vehicle gauntlets in there. I get that you don't want the game to be Halo, but you need to realize that there are some very strong points from Halo that could be brought over and benefit the new game.

Overall, I get that this is the game that Bungie always wanted to make, or something. The feeling I get is that they wanted to tell more stories in the Halo universe, and that they were tied down with Master Chief.

The game is a solid 7 to me. That's not a bad thing. I remember when I was a kid, you'd play anything 6 or higher. Sure 6 or 7 may mean "rent this" instead of "buy this" but there's nothing wrong with that. I think Destiny is worth a rental to find out if it's the game for you. The base story can be beaten in probably 10 hours. You can play some fun multiplayer. It's a game that I'll play far more and far longer than other games I'd rate higher. I wish more people would understand that you can have fun in a game with a poorer rating and it doesn't mean it's rated wrongly or that your opinion is wrong. One of the issues I have with reviews is that if a game doesn't get an 8 or higher, it's absolute garbage in the minds of many. To me, 6-10 are games to play, and 1-5 are games with various issues holding them back. You could have a 4 or 5 worth playing, but there are some gamebreaking bugs, for example. 5 is supposedly an "average" game, but we've conditioned ourselves that 8 is the new baseline, and it sucks. It hogties reviewers.

And yes, I get that even my outlook on a 1-10 rating scale is skewed.

Spoon, what did you find was the easiest method to farm gear? I've been grinding PvP the last few days for Crucible marks, but it's really a grind. You get more reputation for victories, so getting stuck with an AFKer or somebody massively underleveled is almost an automatic loss, which is frustrating as hell. On the other hand, I don't want to run around the Earth level looking for chests like I've seen others recommend.

Level 22 at the moment.

Honestly, I run a lot of PvE. Mostly Strikes. I try to get all my Vanguard bounties done, and pick up the Crucible bounties I know I can get (I skip some things like killstreak bounties because I can't get them). The first story mission on the moon is a good place to farm engrams if you want to farm. You play until you get to the Temple of Crota, and then kill basically everything you can except the Knight. Let him kill you, and then you restart right at the door when it releases all the mobs. Rinse/repeat. I run it on level 9. Usually I'll go there for bounties if I have the "Kill 2+ with Fusion Rifle" or "Kill 3+ with Super" bounties, but I rarely stay very long.

Leveling your Cryptarch is very important. At higher levels, you have a better chance of getting good IDs (supposedly). The main thing is that every time he gains a level, you get mail with engrams in it, at some point, you will usually get at least one legendary engram.

I focused on leveling my base Vanguard rank because it takes less points to grind rep for than the individual factions. I bought two pieces of Legendary gear from the vendor at Rank 2. I just hit Rank 3 today, so once I can get more marks this week, I'll be able to buy a weapon.

There are a few "loot caves" but I've never tried them myself. Figure they usually get patched pretty quick. Just search for them on youtube. There's was a good one on earth but not sure if it still works. Basically stand outside and the mobs spawn non stop. Kill before they leave. Works better with 2-3 people. There's a public event that spawns there also. Just run into the cave and gather loot/ammo when it does. I usually seem to get better/more loot just farming while doing the patrol missions for Bounties and opening chests than anywhere else.

Of course that's all I've done the last 2 nights since I grabbed the Diablo 3 Ultimate edition or whatever it's called for my PS4. That and my ISP is having issues with overselling so it becomes worthless after 7pm when all the kiddies in the area get on. Love getting DC'd from strikes in the middle of them over and over and over...

Oh, I do a lot of patrols, too, since I need to gather upgrade materials anyway. So I'll open chests as I find them but I don't really seek them out.
