Space flying game. Explore, hunt bounties, be a pirate, mine, trade, etc.

Has anyone else been playing this? Surprisingly addictive.

It looks cool for sure. I saw a review on Ars where the author plays it with an Occulus. Bet that makes it pretty intense. I've never been much of a space flying sim guy but sometimes feel like I should give it a chance one of these days.

I think the last one I played was Starfox 64 to put it into perspective, which barely qualifies I know.

It has a very steep learning curve, which put me off at first, but once I learned my way around the controls and started exploring the galaxy I found it most enjoyable.

Yes, most.

The last space game I played that was really fun was Freelancer. Of course I have many on Steam, but haven't fired them up to do much.

I remember liking about Freelancer the most was being able to just fly around between planets and galaxies, buying/selling, saving up to buy a big freighter and just tanking my way through the galaxies to buy and sell a bunch of cargo. Or chasing down some pirates and stealing from them to make my money.

I've been looking for a game that had the same feeling, where I didn't have to do anything, but could choose to do pretty much anything I wanted.

This game looks promising, in that aspect.

I've been playing the **** out of this game the past few weeks. It's amazing how satisfying it is just to jump a few systems and deliver some ramen packets, or whatever.

Just upgraded from a Cobra Mk II to an Asp, and I'm starting to do the Galactic Powers missions (although I'm not sure they're entirely worth it).

Anybody else playing?

To be fair, the ambushers view that as a feature.

Power Play is pretty worthless. Unless you spend several weeks (months?) earning merits, the salary is meager and the equipment rewards are mediocre.

I had been spending my time shooting down wanted ships at resource extraction sites for the bounty rewards, but I recently did some testing and found that commodity trading yields almost double the credits for the time invested (this site is invaluable). I even sold my shield generator for more cargo room. I imagine the relative profitability is due to my available cargo; the Asp has the most available cargo until you can buy the Type-7. If I still had a smaller ship (Cobra Mk II) I'd probably still be hunting pirates.

I'm saving up for an Anaconda, but it's a looooooong journey to 56 million credits. I may grab a Federal Dropship along the way for increased cargo capacity, but that means I'm fully committed to commodity trading, and can't jump into Open Play with friends and shoot stuff.

How do you like it, Shaowstrike?

I should note that a good run of smuggling missions is probably the most profitable use of time, but it's highly dependent on getting a string of high-paying missions from each starport you visit (which is dependent on having a high merchant rank and good relationships with the factions you visit). Any fines you incur from large starports are generally negligible, and fairly easy to avoid, and this method precludes investing a bunch of credits in cargo that you can potentially lose if you get interdicted and shot down.

Funny enough I bought it but I haven't finished the tutorial. M+K is too hard to remember the layout, and my old Sidewinder broke, so I'm saving up for a new flight stick before I continue. I should be getting my Steam Controller shortly, and if it's any good I'll prob use that and the keyboard instead.
