Looks like if you spent money you can con some of it back.

Here comes the backlash. Over the weekend, Pokémon GO developer Niantic Labs made two moves that have made fans furious: first, a new update removed the footsteps from the “nearby” tracking screen, effectively nullifying the already-broken in-game tracking with the implication that it’s not getting fixed any time soon. At the same time, it shut down all the third-party tracking apps people had been using instead, making it impossible to hunt for particular Pokémon through any means. People are upset, and they’re using the lack of tracking as ammunition to successfully request refunds for Pokécoin purchases on both iOS and Android. The argument is that the game advertised tracking at the time they made those purchases, and that feature is no longer available.

There’s a reddit thread full of instructions and success stories, as well as a few mentions for people in tech support that say they’ve been overwhelmed by refund requests from Pokémon GO. I got a refund on a $4.99 purchase and can confirm that it went off perfectly, and I have yet to see the Pokécoins deducted from my account. It remains to be seen how this is going to be handled as more and more people start requesting refunds: we’re in relatively uncharted territory here. I’ve contacted Apple for comment.

I don’t envy Niantic right now: the developer made a mistake by shutting down third-party trackers before fixing the game’s native tracking, but a video game community scorned can be an ugly thing. Death threats are basically a certainty, and CEO John Hanke’s Twitter has already been hacked. But it’s an ugly situation all around: the company needs a community manager, or just the bare minimum of communication. I feel like just the smallest: “we know you’re upset, and we’re working on it” would go a long way towards alleviating the situation, but silence seems to be the order of the day.

Pokémon GO is headed for trouble if it doesn’t start to work on some of these things. The core reddit crowd is frustrated over these recent changes, and casual players are going to start running into an endgame without a whole lot to do. This is a game that’s been out nearly a month and now has less functionality then when it launched in an apparently unfinished state: that’s not a great place to be in. Communication would be a nice start, letting Pokévision and other apps continue to operate would be better, and more features would be best. As it stands, the developer risks being a flash in the pan, albeit a very big one.

Hatching is horribly inaccurate. This guy ran 12km and the game registered 2.2km

The other problem with hatching eggs which I forgot to mention is: The game must not only be open, but on the forefront of your screen. If you're walking around and reading the news or something with Pokemon Go on in the background it won't register your movement. If you're walking around and any kind of screen saver mechanism kicks in it won't register your movement. This is a huge pain in the *** when you want to just put your phone in your pocket and you can't because at some point your pocket will press all kinds of buttons and open something like your camera or your screen/power saver will kick in. You HAVE to have your phone out with the game open.

I've also been reading problems where players have been getting "soft banned" for driving while playing the game or even for just being a passenger in a fast moving vehicle. Not sure exactly what it means to be soft banned, though. It may have happened to me a few times. I'm not sure if it was that or if it was just server lag, but there have been times where I could have the game open and not be able to see any pokestops or gyms which I know are there.

It's a temporary ban triggered by their Anti-GPS Spoofing coding. So as your phone may move quickly, lose GPS signal, regain again in another location, etc. The servers think you are using a GPS spoofing program to make it think you are in different areas that you aren't actually in.

They ban people for it, but because GPS tracking isn't always accurate at that level, it can't be permanent.

My phone tried to do an iOS update the other night and corrupted. Had to be restored to factory default and then to a backup I had made back in January. So I didn't have the Pokemon GO app. And I won't be bothering to download it again. I think I made it to level 6 and had run out of Pokeballs.

People still playing? I've seen articles about traffic going way down and I can believe it. In my own case, the lack of seeing any new Pokemon in a while has diminished my interest -- the novelty of endless rats and pigeons wears off. I only have maybe 35% of my Pokedex filled and haven't seen anything new in over a week. Which leads to boredom so I check less and the cycle continues. For a while I was taking gyms but my potions are running low so that doesn't feel like it's worth it either. Plus the fights aren't exactly compelling and you never hold a gym for long anyway.

And, of course, the tracking issues and the low CP capturing bugs.

I'm still playing and I'm still having fun.

I'm not at all surprised by the large drop in players. It's been a month already so the new factor has worn off and people aren't talking about it constantly any more. Also, let's be honest, it's not like there's all that much to actually do in game. Filling out your pokedex is completely random based on spawns and eggs, and gyms are mostly pointless. There's no endgame to speak of, and exp requirements skyrocket past level 20 so there isn't even that to grind for. There's just nothing to hold most people's interest for long.

Yeah, I'm at 18.5 -- I could power through to 20 easily enough (weedle/pidgey Lucky Egg evolve farming) but... eh, why?

I'm getting together with a large group of Team Valor next Saturday for a gym zerg rush style event. The goal is to capture and max out as many gyms as possible with the strongest pokemon we have. Gyms higher than level 5 are pretty rare-- at least around here. Gyms higher than that tend to stay put a lot longer. Our goal is to pick out at least 10 gyms in particular to maintain this way.

We still go out to dinner and meet up with fellow Valors and sometimes Go players from every team whenever we're out and about. It's more about socializing now that it is about catching pidgeys. The Pokemon Go community as a whole in this area is just massive.
