I came across a riddle today and it has been bugging me ever since. I've thought long and hard on this one and can't for the life of me come up with the answer, but I'm sure that it's one of those where as soon as you hear the answer you think to yourself, "ohhhh... why didn't I think of that?"

Here it is:
Under it stands,
In it begins,
That which feels these winds.

So what the heck is IT??? Well, here's hoping someone can help me out with this... post any ideas you have on it and maybe we'll come up with it.

Wow, no idea.
First of all is this like a real life riddle or any trick thing to do with FFXI?

Its a real life riddle type of thing. I think its a riddle that the thespians at my school use. If that helps at all.

It's going to be something assanine like "the sky" that really doesn't make any sense but they will peer pressure you into saying "ohhh...I get it!" Even though you won't.

I was thinking of a stone bridge over a stream the first time I read it but now I think it could be something about a flower. I dunno. That's a tough riddle. XD /em rubs her chin.

Hmm... There's a few possiblities. I also thought of a plant or such. Maybe a seed? The idea being that it begins *in* the ground, and under that ground, it then stands up above it. And the resulting plant feels the winds. Not sure though. It doesn't feel quite complete.

Another possiblity is presented by this being from a group of thespians. The answer could be a theatre (more correctly, the area of the theatre, not the building itself). Under it is stands for the audience. In it begins the play. It feels the "winds" of the performers words and actions.

Just a thought. Um... Why not ask the thespians at your school, since it's their riddle?

I did ask the thespians, but they are intent on keeping the answer a strictly thespian thing. They apparently tell you upon initiation into the troupe, but I'm trying to figure it out before I audition next fall and thought I'd ask for some other people's feedback because I'm stumped.

I think the plant thing sounds pretty good, except that when talking with one of my friends (a thespian) he told me it might have something to do with something a guy did. I'm not sure if this is accurate or not... its just a lead. And if I wanted I could probably get one of my friends to tell me the answer, but that would take all the fun out of it. Hope that clears some things up.

Have I mentioned yet that it'll be some assanine thing that makes no sense?

Just checking.

I am quite sure that it will make no sense.

Reminds me of the joke:
Q: How are a duck and a bike the same?
A: They both have handlebars... except the duck.

Something completely random like that.

hmmm... I'd have to throw some religion in here, but my guess would be sand.

EDIT:
Either that or a bird egg?
Under it stands, (the bird egg stands under the bird incubating it)
In it begins, (the bird begins in the egg)
That which feels these winds. (the bird is what feels the winds)

not sure of the answer but this may mean it starts with the letters "IN" and not inside some thing.

Earth, soil, a hill. Something like that. To me, the 'it' seems to refer to a place where something lies motionless and then begins some action. The something then 'feels these winds.' So the answer could be about a plant sprouting form the earth.

The riddle could also refer to a large tree with a sapling growing underneath it.

Or it could just be a test to see how you answer...or not even how you answer but whether you are tormented by not knowing the answer. Who cares? ***** the thespians. I'll take lesbians over them any day.

Under it stands
In it begins
That which feels these winds

It could also be the living. From my estimation there are more than a million possible conclusions to this riddle with out have a hint to one specific type of subject.

Well...... I have heard this riddle before too, but I have yet to find an answer. I thought maybe a tree. The seed is under the ground in it the tree begins to grow then when it is grown it feels the wind. But then again I'm kinda stupid like that eh

Is it ham? Ham and Jigglies? Please say yes. Lunch was good today again. ^^

Well, some of the answers on here are very plausible; while the others are just downright silly. I'm glad you guys are enjoying this though. It's been rather interesting reading some of the responses, and surprisingly some of the ones that seem to make the least sense make the most.

I don't think however that any of these is the answer that is "correct" (although it is indeed a riddle with many possible solutions... ie: *********** Some of the ideas, such as the bird egg (remind any of you about the good old easter event??) or a seed or tree sound pretty damn convincing to me and I'll ask one of my friends who knows the answer if thats it, but I get the feeling he is going to say it isn't.

Just thought I'd respond to all of your ideas so far and see if we could keep this thread going... seems pretty interesting to me. Thank you all.

edit: Congrats on enjoying your lunch! Although I'm not sure what ham and jigglies are.....

Sorry, digressed into a previous thread on another forum. Jigglies are the first things (notice the plural) that come to mind when you think of the fairer sex. So add Ham and Jigglies and you have a pretty go combination.

By the way, my answer would be the "American Flag".

Under it stands = the USA

In It Begins = Star Bangled banner says it all really, but the flag brought us together and in us began the emotions of pride and honor.

That which feels these winds = well it blows in the breeze doesn't it?
