Since this is the opening day of the official website, thought I'd post on here 'bout one of the best SF TV series ever. :)

A few years ago, Joss Whedon, creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" got this crazy idea of mixing Science Fiction with the Old West. He came up with 13 truly great episodes of television, the TV series "Firefly". It mixed complex characters, tight plotlines, and Whedon's trademark snappy dialouge into an awesome set of tales of life on the frontiers of space, where the only goal is to keep flyin'.

FOX Television, in its infinite wisdom, axed the series in favor of more "When Animals Attack" specials; and for awhile it seemed yet another brilliant idea had been snuffed out. Then the DVD set came out. And people bought them. In droves.

The suits, for once, listened. Universal Studios greenlit a movie based in the Firefly 'verse, entitled "Serenity". All the actors signed on, and Joss Whedon was tapped to write and direct his first feature film.

Which brings us to today. :) The Serenity website has officialy opened, and I wanted to extend an invite for everyone on Allakhazam to visit. Why? Cause it's Damn Good Sci-Fi, cause we need to support quality writers...and I wannd earn free movie stuff. :)

So check it out:

Serenity: The Official Movie Website

And if you know Firefly....post here! Let everyone know what a goddram shiny show it is, and how much this movie will *rock*.

EDIT: Thought I'd add two more links to info on this show...Check 'em out!

I thought the series kind of sucked, to be honest. But then I allways thought Buffy/Angle was trite poorly written crap.

Agreed. I never saw the draw in those. BAD BAD writing. Worse acting.

I concur.
Firefly I thought was great... but I didn't see enough of it to really get into it. My friend lent me the Series on DVD but I never watched it..

Buffy ******* ruled...

At first I hated it because of the name alone... wholeheartedly. Then I watched the first season on DVD and was hooked.. GREAT Writing.

Enterprise i didn't find that bad.. but prolly because I'm a geek like that.. It just reminded me of the classic alot. for the record I detest DS9 and Voyager.

Firefly is and was a great TV series, and I look forward to owning the DVD collection as soon as I start getting more hours at work. Personally, I never got into Buffy or Angel; too dramatic and teenagery for me. It's like trying to watch Days of our Lives with vampires and kung fu.

Funny, I thought George Lucas got the idea of mixing Sci-Fi with Westerns.

Well, probably someone before him, but whatever.

Well, I'm not one for drama. That, and Sarah Michelle Geller has the acting talent of a lobotomy patient. Cute though.

Heh. And he got the idea from Gene Rodenberry. "Star Trek, it's like....a Wagon Train to the stars! Smiley: lol

Seriously, tho...Where Lucas borrowed elements from Westerns for his universe, Joss Whedon immersed his world in a Western frontier culture, and pulls it off beautifully. Firefly takes the phrase "Space Cowboy" to the next level.

Firefly is a great show to watch if you've been with it from the beginning. Like, say, you tune in to it half way through the series, youd be really confused on who's who. And this is the reason it went off the TV, luckily u can rent or buy the series on DVD ( :

Loved Firefly. I have the series on DVD and have maybe one more episode to watch. I'm looking forward to the movie that they are doing. I hope Sci-Fi Channel picks it up if Fox won't bring it back.

That's not a far-fetched idea. I fully expect the entire series to be broadcast on Sci-Fi, most likely just before the movie comes out in April.

WOOT! New reason to BUMPBUMP the thread!!!!

For all you people in easy reach of Chicago: Joss Whedon, the creator of Firefly (Oh, yeah, and Buffy/Angel) is the Guest of Honor at Wizard World, a Big Damn Comic Convention happening at the Rosemont Convention Center *right now* thru Sunday! It's not just a chance to meet a Writing God (okay, maybe that's just my opinion. Smiley: bowdownSmiley: bowdownSmiley: bowdown ) It's also got Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes (Jay & Silent Bob), more comic artists then you can shake a stick at, anime shows, 'n more! C'mon down at check it out, it's gonna be fun!

It didn't really have a chance to get started. I think it only survived one season. Unfortuantely, it went into the stack of good series that died: Firefly, Miracles, and that series with Alba. Buffy and Angel were fun to watch for a while, but they ran out of ideas after the 3rd or 4th seasons. I won't even go into what I think about Enterprise.

Yeah. But the sad bit is that it went into that stack purely out of spite from the Fox execs. They wanted a series that would appeal to a broad audience, but have never understood the appeal of Joss's writing and characters. Thus, they dumped Buffy, which then got picked up by WB (and later UPN) and became huge. They then did the same thing with Angel (morons!), allowing it to be picked up by other networks.

With Firefly, they specifically decided that the third time was the charm, and they'd stick with whatever Joss came up with. But when crunch time came, they looked at the series and *still* didn't get it. But this time, they didn't want to look like the dorks they were, so instead of cancelling it and letting another network maybe pick it up, they held the contract, but just didn't air it, effectively killing the show. They would rather take a loss then let the show air and maybe let someone else make money off of it (and let the fans enjoy the show).

Pathetic of Fox IMO. But they've always had a problem with shows that don't fit firmly into a neat demographic. They want shows that match one set because it's easier to sell advertising I guess. They don't know what to do with a show that appeals to a broad range of people.

The show died for absolutely no reason other then the Fox execs wanted it to die. Had it been allowed to move to another network, we'd have been watching it for the last couple of years instead of just talking about how good it was. Sigh...

Firefly is worth watching but as for Buffy; flat out ghey. To much teenage drama, and retarded one-liners. Joss tries to hard. Angel's not bad, but the final episode blew ***.
