For all of you at work...Follow

#1 Jul 26 2004 at 12:41 PM Rating: Decent
As I sit here, I realize that I am not the most productive worker on the planet. I am assuming I am not alone.

So I decided to put it out there (as inspired by Office Space): On a given work day (8 hours), how much time do you actually spend doing work?

I would say that, on any given day, I spend between 2 and 3 hours doing real, solid work. The rest is spent surfing the web, posting on forums, reading the newspaper, writing emails etc.

So, fellow idlers, how much do you actually work?

- If you work more or less than 8 hours a day, try to adjust your time spent working to match 8 hours of work...if that makes sense. That way we can have some sort of standardization.

Maybe 1-3 hours (10 hour days), it all depends on how many meetings I have. My bosses are just as bad, I sse them on the web when I walk past thier desks.

In a 8.5 hour day, I probably do 6 hours of work on average. Although, sometimes this "work" is driving around town picking up parts, so I'm not sure that really counts....

Real committed work I do about 2-3 hours a day. I think this might increase a bit, though, because we had a huge layoff which means more work. I actually am really good at finding shortcuts so it takes me about half the time to do something that it might another person.

heh... on a given day, I usually sneak in thru the back door about an hour late. 2 hrs if you go by the 8am schedule I had last year at this time. I sit at my pc for about 10-15 min doing legitimate work and knocking things off my plate. I surf allakhazam and some other forum sites including my own, step out to lunch. Lunch takes about 10 min cause I grab my food and bring it back. I generally eat it while I watch one of my many videos I brought from home on a burned cd.

After lunch, I generally waste another 3 hrs checking and messing around on the boards. By this time, its about 2:30 in which case I'll run around between offices, just b/s'ing with random friends and look like we're discussing something productive. However, most of the time its RPG's or First Person Shooters for the topic at hand. Finally, I check my email accounts to do something without "starting something time consuming" and I generally leave about 3:30-4pm pst. (I get in 9-10am depending if I'm late or not)

All in all, out of a 6 and a half hour day, I work a productive 45-90 minutes per day. ^.^

I thought it was people like him that necessitated our capitalist system, and would prevent a socialist system from being successful.

And to answer the question, anywhere from 1-7.5 hours, depending on how busy the given day is. I'd say I average around 4-5 though.

I usually work a ten hr day so on average I work about 3 hrs a day although, some of that time is making sure my bosses do there job right, the other half of that time is spent down at the gym in the same building, they gave me a free membership!!! So I get to practice my boxing when ever I'm not on a call.

Most of my work is data entry, the only problem with that is I am to damn fast. So, what may take one person 6 hours to do. I can typically finish it in 2 or 3 hours. So, basically I am only doing 2 to 3 hours a day of work and doing whatever the other 5 to 6 hours.

This was just a fun post, yes, but I think I should respond to this...

The funny thing about the quoted post is that you have no idea what I do when I am being productive...
I work for a non-profit Commuinity Action Partnership that provides grants for community projects, oversees other community programs, and generally just helps out low-income people in the state. So I don't think that "***** everyone else" really applies.

Now I did not say to put myself on a pedestal. I just think it is funny that people automatically jump to conclusions.

I've been in the military for over 8 years now. I'm glad that people are using there freedom as they see fit. When i retire I only plan on maybe one day a week of real work or just maybe none at all. You know why? Because i can.

Oh yeah, if i'm not deployed i usually just stare at the wall for 7 to 8 hours and then go home.

Wow, most of you guys put me to shame, and I work for the gov't :) I spend probably 5 1/2 to 6 hours doing work, tho not always hard work/grin

Well, it depends on how you define 'work.'

If you define it like lawyers do when they'e billing you (the ones closest to honest for this calculation), then I probably work around 85% of my day, which varies from 8 to 16 hours.

Now, if you define it as only the times I'm on an assigned task, that number has to drop down to around 40% of the day.

I spend a LOT of my time trying to improve our methods. The procedures in our company suck. Really hard. Ten more years of improvements to our procedures and computer system should put us firmly into the 80's.

Depends on how heavy my workload is really. I do repairs on aircraft and it can get quite involved at times. So we'll start with a hard day... Come in, get jobs told to me, get to work, a quick break for 30 minutes, back to work. Day is done, 7.5 hours work, .5 hour break. Now we go to an easy day. Come in, no jobs needing work. 3 hour break, get a 10 minute job. Hour break, get an hour job. Rest of the time is no work. End of work day on easy day, work only 1.1 hours.

Hate too much work, but sometimes those busy nights really help time fly.

I would say 7 hours per shift doing actual work based on the workload and what one can't do at the company I work at....one that deals with property management.

My hours are 8-5 daily but I usually end up showing up a half hour late, take an hour+ lunch, then leave a half hour early to pick up my daughter. My main job as of two weeks ago when they cut my work load (where I actually had to work for 6hrs solid doing data entry and web design) for some stupid reason is to answer the phones. So technically, I am working the entire time, but in reality I spend most of the time here getting my FFXI fix or emailing my husband back and forth.

It takes alot of work for me to get up and get coffee.

And logging into my computer takes some effort.

Sometimes I have to get up and stretch. That is taxing physicaly.

I'd say I work -42 minutes per day.

On average, per day, I probably work 2 hours.

I work in a hockey pro shop so I get to cruise the forums and watch hockey all day. Right now, there's no hockey on, so I watch DVDs all day.
