Not too while ago I enlisted in the US Air Force. I have sense completed BMT and currently attending Tech school. As you can figure people from all over the country are put together and stereotyping makes itself apparent.

I never realized what people really thought about Texas until recently. Some people were somewhat jealous it seems. They complained alot about the fact that Texas was once its own nation and that is the only state that flies the state flag even with the U.S. flag. Also, many people honestly thought that everyone in Texas rides horses.... I mean dam, please. Its 2004 there is more in Texas than cattle and horses. Not not everyone owns a horse, wears a cowboy hat, and drives a beatup Ford pickup that has seen better days. Some people have gone as far as to say they have the state and most of the people in it. Being a Texas Native I cant really understand them.

I just wanted to ask yall on you thoughts on "Texans"

(Stereotyping a bad thing? Im guilty of each of the things I listed. I live on a ranch, and have a 1988 F250 pushing 300k miles....)

Hehe

Honestly, even though not everyone in Texas falls into the stereotypes, there are TONS more people in Texas that DO fir that description than any other state. So deal with it.

Not to mention that so many texans perpetuate it..."don't mess with Texas" e.g.

But there are many texans that step up and fill in for those that do not fit into the stereotypes. I have seen too many coots driving around small cities in a beat up truck with a shot gun in the back window.

Honestly, the two kinds of people that I just cannot stop myself from despising are Frenchmen and Texans. Strictly based on personal experience mind you. Can't stand either of them.

There's only two things in Texas: steers and ******. Which one are you? :)

Pretty much every Texan I've met has been a rascist ********* Then again, I've only met a dozen or so throughout my life (that I've talked to for any length of time).

haha I know what you mean! I live in Houston, TX. This place is extremely diverse when it comes to people. Yet when I talk to people that have never been here they seem to think that we are country bumpkins. I have also ran across people that thought we had old western bars, tumbleweed, and rode on horses with carriages.

Once I have friends come down and visit me they are pretty shocked and their stereotypes go out the window. I can't speak for all parts of Texas but Dallas, Austin, and Houston is nothing like what people speak of who have never been here.

I moved here because of a job offer and I expected the worst. I was pleasantly suprised at how friendly everyone was and I can't see myself living anywhere else.

Thats strange because I have had really good experiences with Texans. One of my really good friends is a Texan, and the weirdest thing about it is that I am part Mexican, which might make you think they would be racists towards, because they say they hate Mexicans. But I think they have been friendly to me than even my native Californians. But who knows, maybe its just because I don't live there. But everyone has their stereotypes. I remember helping someone out in Colorado who had a flat tire, and they asked us where our little read convertable was. When we pointed to our bigg a$$ Ford F250 their jaws dropped. It was hilarious!

Aside from Austin, I think I'd be pretty ok with it if we gave Texas back to Mexico.

Oh, and Plano I guess, since my internet bluegrass station is there.

Ain't enough black folks.

Too much German ancestry.

Oh, and Plano I guess, since my internet bluegrass station is there.

Where? The three places I have lived near Dallas are pretty much all around Plano.

There are some of the nicest people you will ever meet in your life here in Texas. There are also some of the meanest, nastiest, bigotted, physically imposing individuals you will ever have the displeasure to meet here in Texas.

I think the same is true of almost every other state.

I tend to think you shouldn't hate people you don't know.

I'm a native Texas but have visited many parts of the country and everywhere I go, there seems to be a little bit of an expectation that I should be a little different (especially when I'm in the north). So my philosophy goes, why should I disappoint them? When I'm out of the state I find myself often talking up Texas pride and even slowing my speech a bit for the fun of it. I am of mostly German descent and grew up in Dallas, but most of my family is from East Texas, so I've learned two ways to speak. Like my family, or like everyone else in Dallas. ;) I can turn them on and off at whim, and I tell you it's fun when you're outside of the state. My girlfriend is from Connecticut and she always laughs when I say things (quite naturally) that must sound like,

Well, I wuz fixin' to go ta the store, but I ain't goin' without y'all.

And yes, it's pronouced 'wuz' not was. ;)

I would have to disagree with the person saying we are all racists

I have lived in Houston my whole life (except two years in Victoria)...Houston is by far the most diverse major metropolitian area in the country (fact based as well, with regards to percentages regarding social and economic areas compared with the other major cities in the US)

Also I travel for my job quite often and I have noticed that people in Texas (I am talking about the cites not rural area) are much more nicer than people in other states. Just take an elevator ride in New York then come to Houston and take one ...you will see the difference.

But what it all boils down to is that every city, state, county (parish, for those of you in Louisiana) and country no matter where, will have all sorts of people....from the nicest to the rudist and racist.

Well, I was in Texas a few weeks for BMT, and am now stationed in OK so I am always in TX (nothing seems to be legal in OK ><). I do have to say that things are a little different in TX...it is true about the Flag, and the accents, well lets just say I havn't gotten used to them yet, I'm from WA and BC so a completely different way of talking. On the bright side, I now have a unique way of saying things...Ya'll, I don't know what you're talking aboot...you get the point. All and all, TX is awsome and if you ever get the chance you visit sometime

Dude if you are not over the age of 6 I would recommend getting some tutoring in English. Most of us don't speak Texan. Here in the "Yankee" states we use things like punctuation and proper sentence structure. LOL No offense bro but you post gave me a headache.

I don't have time to pull up statistics here at work but he does speak the truth. To really experience it though you would have to visit here to see. You can't just go by stereotypes and rumors. Hell as a white person I am a minority in this city.

Who in God's holy name would be jealous of Texas? I could see your average guy on the street being jealous of someone who lives in New York or California because they have stereotypical fantasy notions of it. Or Florida maybe. Hell, maybe even Washington state if you like big evergreen trees and rain... but Texas?

That just means you have no respect for America. Damn hippies. Probably a bunch of Al'Qaeda members waiting to happen.

You know I'm fairly certain that the thirteen orginial states were part of a placed called ENGLAND once upon a time.

I imagine they probably don't get to that much in Texas schools, however, what with all the time spent teaching Creationism and making **** skinned caps and all.

Hawaii wasn't a nation. They were a random assemblage of dirt-eating savages.
