::NO FLAMING PLEASE, JUST GOOD FUN::

They know who they are... we know who they are... but tell the whole wide world, who are the sell outs in the music business?

My vote would have to go for Eminem, 50 Cent, and LL Cool Jay (the original sellout).

So who do you think are the sellouts of music?

Everyone who take money for their art is a sell out by definition.

Fool.

Umm, what Smash said.

Artists should be making art for the sake of the art itself.

Otherwise they're just performers. And I've got just the thing for them to perform on.

METALLICA!!!!

Used to be my favorite band of all time...but now, they don't even exist as far as I am concerned...but Smash does make an excellent point.

Very true in definition, but there are plenty of artists that make music because it is their passion and not for a pay check. Alhtough a couple million dollars never hurts.

Right, and then support suing 12 year olds who download a song. "Thost little bastards aren't getting my passion for free!"

Smiley: rolleyes Metallica never sold out, they earned a record contract.

Just because they where forced to spend 8 years on the road because Nerdvana destroyed the rock genre doesn't make them sell outs when they start selling Albums in Virgin Smiley: oyvey

.......I think there is a big difference between selling out and trying to sell yourself. If anything they should be only labeled as conformists. There wasn't any cause they were supporting or morality they protested. I think some people forget that they are entertainers and not their personal effigies of inner beliefs. As the music progresses forward and times change so will they...So they can keep their jobs and to keep on entertaining people......(Granted they suck so much *** now it's not even funny. And I hate that whiny, pissant legal ******** Lars was pulling with Napster.)

Liz Phair did a pretty good job of going from the darling daughter of the Fem-Alternative music scene to stereotypical blonde pop star in one album.

There are some that sue 12 year olds, and there are some that do it for the art but need to make a living, you're both right, apart from smash.

I really wish that the "used to be" fans would quit their whining about Metallican and let the real fans enjoy the music. Okay so you don like their new crap, they cut their hair. Oh my Bob!

The funny thing is that while these "used to be " fans sit and complain about how Metallica sold out, Metallica is making money off of these suckers because they go out and buy all the old albums again, or the boxed sets from the good ol days. Nice job boys.

Here's how I see "sell out" -

Quote:
A musian or musical group that switches from their usuall sound just to be more radio-friendly. It can also mean someone who is too popular for their own good

or

Quote:
A band, singer or muscian who changes their style of music to fit the trend/make more money

Actually I don't own a single album anymore. And its not because they cut their hair, they totally changed their style in the Sain Anger CD, and instead of keeping with their original sound, went with something that was what the pop culture wanted. I don't blame them for doing it. Hell I probably would have done it. I just refuse to listen to their new stuff because I know that it doesn't even contain half of their potential.

It took me about thirty readings of that to realize you meant "cover" instead of "over".

And the song is "Flower" Smiley: wink2

The hair has squat to do with the music, which sucks anymore, I'm very sad too say.

I bought the old albums long ago.

I stopped buying after Load.

Garage, Inc was a rehash of old material, with a questionable mix of new cover songs, but nothing truly stood out (except Whiskey in the Jar).

St. Anger? Gimme a break.

I'm not quite sure when Metallica died for me, but I've narrowed it down to two possible points:

(1) When Lars went ****** about Napster,

or,

(2) when they recorded "I Disappear" for the Tom Cruise-a-thon MI:2*

* Of course, John Woo could be lumped into the same category here. The only difference is, I still have respect for the Woo.

Apparently she's changed her tune then (no pun intended). When her latest first came out and critics talked about her selling out, she was in the articles saying how she wanted to try different music and didn't want to be doing the same stuff and those who accused her of selling out were just keeping her in one genre, etc etc. The usual dog 'n pony show.

'Sides, she left Chicago to move to LA of all places. How much more sell-out can you get?

I'm saddened to see my girlfriends Liz and Nina in this topic. I have had discussions with Liz about her selling out, though. We don't consider it selling-out exactly because she is really attractive and would leave me if I accused her of this vile act. Nina, on the other hand, never sold out. Her first solo release w/o Veruca Salt band members (namely Louis Post) sounded very reminiesent of VS but with a more sombre mood. VS songs were always a mixture of slow, feely songs combined w/ fast-paced energetic songs. She is still keeping true to this w/ her slow feely songs. Now, if you don't mind, I'd like to return to a quiet candle-lit dinner with both of my exceptionally talented girlfriends.

More often than notits the band's "usual" sound that got them lots of radio airplay, and a video on MTV that's been played 100,000 times a week for two weeks, and drew the undying adoration of millions of greasy little teen fans.

Then once the band actually has enough juice with the record companies to actually make the music they want to make, and their sound changes, everyone calls them sell outs.

But the bottom line is that people grow and change (except for AC/DC), and that will inevitably produce a change in the nature of the artist's music. Whether the fanbase is capable of accepting this or wailing like a bunch of prepubescent girls is really not a matter of any concern to me.

Here's a good rule of thumb.... If you like the album, buy it. If not, don't.
