I read that story and I began to cry. I had a similar experience. I am a RDM now but when I first started to play I was a WHM. I lived in Bastok. so I do not know what possessed me but I decided I was going to leave. I found someone a 56 WARRIOR who let me tag along with him. I was only a level 18!
The story begins as:
I was sitting in North Gustaberg contiplating on whether to go back to Bastok or just keep going and see where the road takes me. A person on a chocobo runs by so I hit my macro and waved. HE turned around and waved back. So i messaged "Hello." He replyed, "Why are you sitting there?" For some odd reason I said, "I don't know, I am deciding on whether or not I want to quit." Suprisingly he got off of his chocobo and said "type /follow I want you to see something."
I stood up and did, the long walk took forever and I got aggroed by some stuff, not too bad....
We talked and got to know each others name, interests, what our goals were in the game.
We entered a place called La Thiene and and he typed to me "/sit I wanna talk, if you have the time"
He proceeded to tell me that he loved this game and how most people didn't seem to realize or care that other people do get their feelings hurt and how we should all work together because there are so many experiences to indulge in that to do it alone would be unsatisfying. Having companionship, even if just a video game......We sat there and talked and he mentioned that he still had to show me something.
I followed him and as we waited he said, look...
It was a rainbow. Oh, it was beatuiful.......
He invited me to his LS and everything was good, i noticed that i had not seen him or his brother on and quite frankly noone was on. Then about 2 weeks later, his brother a 45 THF got on and called a meeting. We all met at an outpost in the dunes and then went to the "secret" beach and as we sat there and heard the waves, his brother told us that my buddy had passed away in real life. The sounds of those waves will forever echo in my head, he once told me, "listen to them, it may sound funny but they are singing a song."
This person who helped me, showed me things I never would have seen, dead, I couldnt believe it. He knew he was dying too, and still everynight, even when he was sick his brother said got on that game because of the people he met and liked. Now i am in a different LS, I love them dearly.....I do but I keep thinking of what it wouldve been like to see these things with my friend.
I play now and I have lost all wanting in that game, I dont have the same "spark" as I use to.......until now..that story just makes me realize that SO WHAT if it is a game, it is a beautful piece of art.......
I don't want to play the game alone anymore, and I will always miss my friend, reguardless that we never met...he changed the way i thought.....
