Getting a Second LifeFollow

Okay...I think I found my next addictive online game. And it isn't really a game...

It's called Second Life, and it's a wonderful break from the bump and grind of levellevelleveling. That's right...There's no powers, classes, quests, or XP. It's a virtual mega world to explore and build.

You have complete control of your character's look, from what clothes to wear, to facial features...the system is simple to manipulate yet very versatile. And you can change into an entirely different look with just a few mouseclicks.

Then you can explore a completely surreal world built by fellow players. the scenery may not be of the graphic seamlessness of, say, FFXI or some of the just released MMORPGs, but they are extremely creative. and if you feel up to the challenge, you can flex your own 3-D design muscles and make a landscape of your own.

There's lots more to do besides just walking/flying around (did I mention you can fly?) You can go to live streaming music concerts, get funky in the dance clubs, go skydiving, snowboarding, sailing, auto racing, target shooting....Oh, yeah, and if you wanna, you can play shoot 'em up, too.

And, with your weekly stipend of Linden dollars, you can buy call sorts of in-game goodies, like hovercars, furnishings, clothing galore, dance moves, and just about anything else your fellow players can program in. (I'm saving up to get myself a sweet 2-seater hoverplane with turbo jets and chameleon coating)

Best of all....a Basic membership costs $10....period. That's right, a *one-time* payment! Which means you don't have to give up anything to give Second Life a try (oh, and it's a free trial for 7 days, too)

I was *really* excited when I started it...I finally will get to create a 3-D model of all my RP characters. It's a great place to go and socialize when you need a break from the rigors of powerleveling.

You can check it out at www.secondlife.com.

Are there any other Second Lifers out there? My name's Liona Clio on SL...Whatchoo guys think of it???

I think your post sounds remarkably like a paid advertisement.

So what's the point if there's no alien gooks to kill or large_rats to exterminate? You freaking build stuff? I don't get it.

I looked at that thing a couple weeks ago.

It caught me on the hook with the FREE TRIAL thing.

It started reeling me in with its cool features.

But then I broke loose when I found out you have to pay to start, and those monthly fees.

Uh, wha?

We pay $15-20 a month for our EQ/SWG/FFXI/etc...and you guys are freaking out over a $10/month Premium membership? Sure, you want to build a full-replica of Disneyland, it's gonna cost ya...But if you just want to participate, it's $10 and you're in. I thought it was a good value.

As to the buying online money for RL money...The main arguement I've seen against this in other games was "It's Cheating". I don't see how you can 'cheat' in Second Life.

Sorry if you took offense at my enthusiasm...I thought it was a good place to go have fun in. I can accept the fact that some people prefer the shoot 'em up/kill things angle of other MMORPGs...that personal preference. But A) I'm not an employee of Second Life, so I'm not selling the game other than the fact that I think it's cool, and B) what you buy is your own business. Not everything is some bait-and-switch tactic...Maybe you guys have been dealing with Sony too long... :P

In reading, it's the initial $10 purchase 9.95/month for a premium membership, and then a land fee (base is like $5) for $14.95/month (24.95 the first month.) Average MMO price, well worded to be deceptive, but what can one do?

Nono, It's a $10.00 one time fee to get a Basic Membership.
If you want land, you pay $10 a month after this for a Premium Membership (the $10 Basic one time fee doesn't stack) And a Premium Membership gets you the right to get a small bit of land at no extra cost.

*Sigh* I know I'm sounding like a shill. :( I just didn't expect Second Life to get such a resounding razzing from everyone...especially in costs!

sounds kind of cool. but.....it is basically sims online with a twist.

guys want competition. they want to kill stuff. they want to biotch slap a fellow player once in a while.

might have a girl market to it, but really, you can play SWG and not spend anything more than the subscription price and you can own / build any number of buildings all over the place.....AND.....have every thing every other mmorpg has.

it sounds like a concept test to see how far they can push the envelope for sucking money out of your wallet. it seems to me the most expensive things you get sucked into are the ones that sound the cheapest at first....................eventually, you are going to want to do more than fly around looking at OTHER peoples stuff.
