I just started 2-3 weeks ago. Last time before that was 2003. PS3 and PPC G5 Mac. I feel bad for letting it slip my mind. Past 4 years my mac has sit idle at night. Hopefully later next year add a i7 socket 1366 machine to the mix when it's not gaming. I plan on installing it on my work mac and having it run at night.

Getting the PPC G5 running on both cores was a pain. 2 folding apps controlled by InCrease did the trick.

We do need more folders. Majority are in hibernation.

I'd be all for joining an allakhazam Seti@home group. My computer can do workunits with CUDA and it totally puts my cpu to shame.

Anyone still running F@H?

Installed it a couple of weeks ago because I rarely use all the cores anyway. Currently I seem to only be getting small packages as it's working on 117/250. Anyone know if this is bad or what?

Must admit, I didn't understand half of the tech stuff on the website, so I just installed the Windows client and set it to start with the OS. Still, it's impressive how many people are contributing to it.

Edit: Seems like most of the work units are done in 2.5 million steps, taking an average of five hours per unit. Are the 250 referring to 2,500,000 steps?

Wow, it's been over a year since anyone has posted here. Anyway, at the end of October the PS3 will no longer support the Folding@Home program and it will be removed with the next system update.

Kotaku.com wrote:
By The End Of The Month, The PS3 Will No Longer Be Fighting Diseases

After five years, 15 million users and over 100 million computation hours having been crunched, Sony's partnership with Stanford University's Folding@home project will draw to a close at the end of the month.

The program, which has allowed PS3 owners to donate their console's processor towards crunching scientific data for the university's alzheimer's research team, has also benefited the fight against cancer and parkinsons disease.

"The PS3 system was a game changer for Folding@home, as it opened the door for new methods and new processors, eventually also leading to the use of GPUs", Folding@home's boss at Stanford, Vijay Pande, told Sony.

"We have had numerous successes in recent years. Specifically, in a paper just published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, we report on tests of predictions from earlier Folding@home simulations, and how these predictions have led to a new strategy to fight Alzheimer's disease."

"The next steps, now underway at Stanford, are to take this lead compound and help push it towards a viable drug. It's too early to report on our preliminary results there, but I'm very excited that the directions set out in this paper do appear to be bearing fruit in terms of a viable drug (not just a drug candidate)."

The removal comes as Sony takes the under-used Life With PlayStation section off the PS3's dashboard, as part of the console's 4.30 update, due on October 23.

I hadn't heard about this until yesterday. I've gone ahead and installed the program and have completed two projects so far. I'll keep it going when possible. :)

Jesus Christo. Pretty sure this thing could be eliminated.

I started up again because I have a server that sits idle most of the time. Why not?
