If you want to do page claims, you willl be rated sub-d, so just expect it. I'm going to rate you down every time I see one of your posts today, too, because you didn't know this rule.

I remember one time when I was vacationing in Vegas, there was a PSA commercial on the TV one night that basically prompted women to put their purses in the back seat with their kids to help avoid the possibility that they will get out of the car and forget the kid.

Not really sure what it says about us that we're more likely to remember our purse than our kid. Knowing how frequently I forget my purse, however--my kid is screwed if it comes down to that.

Yes, Ambrya, but I've seen pictures of your children. They're so beautiful, they shine with their own inner light and there is no chance you would miss them in the back of your car.

Unfortunately this has happened more than once in my area. The thing that really bothers me, though, when I can bear to think about it, is that nothing ever happens to the parent.

There have been cases of drowning, of children getting up while their parents slept and getting out of the house to be run over by a car, kids who choked to death in a automatic window when left unattended in a vehicle, the little girl who fell into the Grand Canyon...

It was an "unfortunate accident" and the parents have "suffered enough." No charges for negligence, child endangerment, homicide - nothing is ever filed against the parents.

Honestly, if you can't keep track of your child you should not only have to pay the consequences you should have any remaining children taken away from you as well as your ability to breed.

Kids are tricksy. I used to climb like a little monkey. A neighbor called my mom one time to tell her I was walking across the top of the swing set. Another time I was on the roof. /shrug

My older brother flagged down the mailman with his diaper once (my brother's diaper, not the mailman's. As far as I know). The dog once kept me from running into the road by holding onto my shirt while I screamed bloody murder.

We were lucky. Not everyone is.

Sounds similar to me - constantly climbing trees, walking along the tops of unfinished building frames, using empty huge wooden cable barrels to walk along - now that I'm a parent, I can understand why my parents would always freak out when they saw me doing something that should only be done under a circus tent.

I really can't speak for the potential of someone and the negligence. I mean sometimes I'm desperate for just a few moments of peace. Just 5 minutes where I'm not having to read a book or tickle my daughter. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE playing with her, but sometimes you just need a break.

But that's in a controlled environment. The examples of a parent leaving their kid in the car to be strangled by the automatic window or something else. How is it that people think it's ok?

Point of example - the job I work at, we started installing these machines at the branches. They're testing machines that ask basic questions such as, "Do you think it's ok to show up at work high on weed?" Simple questions that someone could easily answer. It doesn't say "would you?" it says "Do you think it is ok". Thousands, and I mean thousands of people ended up having to find a new line of work, because they really truly do believe that it is ok to do things that most people know. Basic right from wrong questions.

Are the people causing harm to their kids out of neglect soundly thoughtful people who know right from wrong, or do they think it's not a big deal to leave their kids in the car while they're at a long doctor's appointment or when going christmas shopping?

And that's the basic question. Samira's example is different. Crap happens, I know it, I was a kid once and I'm not sure how my husband even survived. I have 4 kids and boy does crap happen. The difference is, kids are dumb and do things without thinking versus parents are dumb and do things without thinking that have consequences for their kids.

Taking a nap while you child is napping is ok - if they are in a crib or at least in the house and can't get out. Taking a nap and sleeping so deeply that you don't hear your 18 month old get up because they can, go to a window that is wide open and has no screen and is many stories above ground, they fall out, and you don't wake up until it's too late - there's no luck there, that's negligence.

And yes, unfortunately, this really happened.

Well, you didn't say that in your last post. I was responding to this:

Quote:

and pointing out that kids get up to all sorts of things while their parents are asleep or preoccupied. My parents had no clue I knew how to pick locks, for example, or that I understood that I could climb on a chair and unlatch the door.

Sure, the stuff about leaving a kid unattended in a car should be a no-brainer; unfortunately that's about how much a lot of people have to work with.
