$200 PC with what OS?Follow

So Walmart is now selling a $200 PC with gOS (a linux OS). Now, I went through 10 pages of google before I gave up trying to find any information on gOS. Why would any company sell a $200 PC with a free OS and pick the most obscure version of said OS you could possibly find.

Rediculous.

Because it's only $200?

Apparently you need to wait a couple more hours.

"Stop imagining"? Ok... that won't be a problem Smiley: laugh

It almost looks as if this particular version of Linux was created specifically with the WalMart roll-out in mind which would explain the lack of previous press on the version.

It'd be 8:20am on the west coast. They have 40min to get the ball rolling!

Yeah, still a bad idea. Should have went with Ubuntu or something with a better infrastructure and support system. Not having seen anything about gOS I'm willing to bet they'll turn people away from Linux more than turn them on to it.

A PC that likely won't do anything but run a couple word processors and surf the web. Does it come with solitare?!

Am I the only one that doesn't like Google Apps? They're just clutter, imo. Google has the cleanest most spartan search page on the net, that's one of the reasons a lot of people like it. Google Apps are kind of a something blah blah blah guh guh hooooo

Alright I'm bored of typing. Imagine what it was I was about to say and just go with it.

They're catering to the market whose idea of online gaming is Internet Mahjong. It'll suffice.

Oh, it's certainly a good idea, that PC will do anything the average hotmail user will want to do. I just think they should have picked an established linux distribution instead of this gOS thing that no-one knows about. Hopefully I'm wrong about it, I have my doubts.

They sold something like 150,000 of those worthless WebTV things. And those didn't even come with solitaire.

I've only used the Google word processor a couple of times but it worked fine for me. It actually saved Flea one day when she had to work on a file with a corrupted image that kept crashing MS Word.

It would have likely been better for the users, but I'm sure Wal-Mart just wanted its own little proprietary flavor of Linux for various reasons (I don't know; I've never run a company).

its walmart and sadly they have been out of stock since 2002. just read this on slashdot and did a little digging. they are only on sale in select stores, sadly there is not 1 store within 100 miles of my home zip that has any in stock.

i would gladly pick one up in a heart beat for my kids.

Pick up a used PC for 200$ and throw Fedora Core on it.

Much better quality than anything WalMart sells.

was not able to find the specs on that rig either. for $200 you could build a PC, or close to it with minimal performance.

Yes, but for someone who just wants internet access with facebook and email $200 for a new PC and zero setup time is an awesome deal. If my kids needed a PC to do their homework on I'd seriously consider it, the time it takes me to setup a new box is worth $200 even if I have the parts lying around to build one for free.

kind of what i was thinking. also it will all be new hardware and walmart for all its faults does have a rather liberal return policy.

You or I could yes. Johnny Janitor with a cousin on the other side of the planet that just wants to be able to send an email to china A. Can't, B. Doesn't want to waste the time, C. Just doesn't know how crappy the PC is and never will because he'll never need anything better than that.

Edit: You addressed this while I was posting but I'll leave it up anyway.

was not an argument, just a statement. although for $200 i am not sure what you could build with 100% new parts. i just had to replace my firewall (i use IPCop) and just the board, CPU, ram, case, PSU ran me $210 and that was wholesale price. i only put 512M ram, did not have to replace the HDD, floppy, or CDRom.

so it would be hard to build anything of any kind of performance for less then $300.

i would find it very hard to beat $200 to build that rig even with that slow of a CPU, not that you could even buy that CPU new today at most wholesalers, could i get it down to that price and make anything on it to sell.

Yeah, I couldn't build that for $200. It comes with keyboard, mouse, and speakers as well, so there's say $20-25 right there, assuming cheapest you could find.

So $175.00 for that box, no-way, couldn't do it without some serious mass quantity discount, even with the flat out cheapest generic parts I'd probably be around $250-300.

Regardless, it's just nice to see more PC's being sold with linux pre-installed, even if the computer IS junk. Anyone have a picture of this thing?

Is it just me or does GOS look far too similar to MacOSx?
