My pub is going to be a movie starFollow

#1 Mar 14 2012 at 4:03 PM Rating: Decent
So, the pub I usually go to when I want to pretend to be intellectual or watch a soccer game (they keep the soccer channel on 24/7 upstairs), apparently has a movie being filmed at it today.

It's funny, because The Globe is known as "the grad bar" and undergraduates and fratties learn to steer clear of it because the average age of the patron is around forty, and it's sort of embarrassing to watch your professors chug a beer and eat a bratwurst while arguing about Nietzsche. And yet, the director is recasting it as a "blues bar" for this movie. Smiley: rolleyes

Is it a period era type film or current time frame? I need to know just how disgusted with the director I am.

Current time frame, I think. The plot of the movie involves an aging baseball talent scout going on one last trip to Georgia and taking his daughter with him.

Well, the bar is in Georgia, so that's something, at least.

I'm sorry, but if you are stupid enough to be surprised that this is copyright infringement, you shouldn't be running a business. These people are dumbasses. They were actually using images from the movies for promotions, and don't have the rights to use Tolkein's written work either.

Fools.

And they are trying to make this out as if they are being bullied by Hollywood. You created an entire business model using someone else's intellectual property, and they want you to stop. And that's bullying?

Oddly enough, I can see this same sentiment being use in the threads about the torrent sites allowing free downloads of music, movies, and anime....

When I was in elementary school, someone had painted Disney characters all over the walls of the lunchroom. Giant murals of Disney characters.

Then one day we came in and they had all been painted over. The parents got a letter saying the school had received a cease and desist from Disney.

An elementary school lunchroom.

My middle school, on the other hand, wrote a very nice letter to Jim Davis asking for permission to use Garfield as our library mascot. He wrote back very nicely and said sure thing, so long as we didn't sell any drawings for profit or anything like that. And he included a dozen free library related posters as a donation.

It's relative. Disney's a huge company, and in all likelihood that letter was sent more or less automatically, without any attention paid to how the images were being used. It probably was never even seen by anyone with the authority to actually allow them to be used--the legal department would have just gone ahead and sent the CaD.

Had it actually been seen by higher-ups, they probably would have said yes. Free publicity with no risk of the images being used to profit someone else? Win, win.

Which also probably helped Mr. Davis say yes. Maybe he is a nice guy and would have said yes anyway--I know nothing about him. But he's in a position to actually handle these events himself, or he has someone else handle it (but that position wouldn't be so alienated).

Why? Because he has less he needs to protect, and fewer instances of abuse he needs to stop.
