a day. It's supposed to be healthy. It's probably a desperate measure to prop up British apple and pear producers.

Link to the Daily Mail. If you find Fox news amusing, you'll enjoy the other bits of that sensationalist rag.

How does one manage this herculean feat? If I ate seven portions of fruit a day, I'd soon become diabetic, as is allegedly the way with my people. Does anyone here eat five portions a day?

Seven pieces of pizza should have you covered.

That would be a good reason to not treat "seven portions of fruits and vegetables" as "seven portions of fruit".

Given the usual diet of the modern first world adult, I don't think you could overdo it on fruit from a sugar standpoint anyway without some pre-existing condition. No one gets fat from too many oranges and bananas. You'd have a bigger problem with acquiring enough toilet paper for what comes next with that sort of binge fruit eating.

Well, according to some quick searches, "portions" are supposed to be much smaller than what I'm typically used to (big surprise). Looking at these portion sizes, a lunch-sized container of home-made salad for me is probably 3-4 servings of vegetables. A cup of leafy greens is a serving. A half-cup of raw veggies is a serving. That's not a whole lot; a small baggie of carrot or celery sticks for a snack would be a serving. I mean, ensuring seven portions every day might be a lot, but I can see hitting that mark without consciously trying to. A piece of fruit with breakfast, some sort of raw veggie snack (broccoli, celery, carrots), green salad at lunch (maybe some tuna or chicken on it), veggies with dinner and another piece of fruit for dessert.

I mean, it's calling for seven portions total of fruits and vegetables, not seven portions of each.

Yeah, I heard that the "portion" should be about 3 oz. A big banana is actually two servings of fruit.

I always hit five or six pretty easily. but I'll have to sneak an extra veggie in it seems.

V-8 not looking like a bad idea, actually.

Animal eats vegetables. Man eats animal.

I'll take that as close enough.

A couple of carrots, an apple, and some salad or other greenery in the evening. That's as close as I get as at some point I need to indulge in a giant doughnut or other to make sure I get to my 2000ish calories a day.

As for the V8 thing, kids love the V8 fusion stuff (their fruit/veggie juice), but we've had little luck getting veggies in any other way.

Kids these days...

The problem with V8 is that it comes in either hyper-sodium form or *** flavored.

For what it's worth their fruit/veggie blends taste the same as any other generic fruit juice on the market. Would have no idea there was veggies in them if they didn't list it on the label.

And even then...

Yeah, we use the Fusion blends for juice for the little guy. Figure it's got to be better than 98% apple or white grape juice like most blends.

Low-sodium version is not too bad, and makes a fairly good Bloody Mary.

Most sodas taste better cold too. And I'm assuming coffee is better hot than at room temperature. You're not drinking a fine wine or barrel aged whisky. You're drinking seventy-five cents a can tomato juice. Smiley: tongue

Edit: Also, if your V8 tastes like ***, you may need to find a new way to smuggle them into the kitchen.

That would be a compelling argument except that regular V8 tastes just fine without nearly freezing it. You just have to resign yourself to drinking an ocean's worth of salt.

B-b-but I don't like vegetables! If I want to be healthy, I must first become diabetic! The daily recommended daily amount gods will it!

They (non descript scientists, nutritionists and statisticians enlisted by Sky News for their morning feature) linked eating 7 pieces with a lower rate of death from all causes. Rather than believe eating an eggplant will allow me to survive a stabbing, I'm inclined to believe that the people who're eating that much fruit and veg are living safer, healthier lives anyway.

I remember reading (in Fast Food Nation or Chew on This, I can't remember which, and I'm too lazy to read through them again to find a page reference or something) that as part of a study, a university student across the pond ate nothing but burgers and water for a period of time and supposedly remained healthy. I assume he had *some* fruit and veg, but I don't think that he ate seven portions, or five, daily.

The thread title looks vaguely like a spam bot thread title. Can I interest any of you in vintage-Nigerianprince-hooker-fakepassport insurance?

Probably not great for long term health, but that's not surprising at all. Some terrible McD and BK burgers aside, most will have bread, meat, lettuce, tomato, onion, some sort of sauce, and possibly cheese, which while not hitting a perfect ratio of food types, is at least not missing anything major. People have eaten a less well balanced diet than that for most of human history.

I vaguely remember a guy eating a junk food diet(part of me thinks it was a professor) to prove that calories in-out is what matters most for weight loss. And there was a documentary done in response to Supersize Me in which the guy ate a fast food only diet and lost some weight. It was actually pretty interesting to watch.

It's still really bad for you since there's waaaaay too much salt and fat in fast food.
