Database vs Wiki?Follow

#1 Mar 17 2011 at 3:55 PM Rating: Decent
Hello,

I'm new to editing pages here and have been trying to help out with some of the Rift articles. What's confusing to me is the difference between Database pages vs Wiki pages. Before only the Wiki had Zone pages and the Database did not. As such I was editing the Wiki pages. However now I see that there are entries for many things in both Wiki and Databse, including Zones, Item Sets, etc.

So I was editing a Zone wiki and trying to link to Artifacts but it comes up as missing - even though those artifacts exist in the Database.

Am I missing something here? Does the Database pull from the Wiki pages? How can I link to things in the Database? Or is the Wiki useless at this point and I should only focus on Database pages?

Thanks for any help in advance =)

On your recently edited wiki page on Iron Pine Peak zone at http://rift.zam.com/wiki/Iron_Pine_Peak_%28Rift_Zone%29 your item collection links are all bad, because they point to non-existant wiki pages. You can fix these by searching for the collections, and using the appropriate link. For example, searching for the first collection Commander Calthyx brought up the page http://rift.zam.com/en/search.html?q=Commander+Calthyx and then clicking on the Collections link brought up http://rift.zam.com/en/search.html?q=Commander+Calthyx#Collections and on it is the link to the collection itself Commander Calthyx at http://rift.zam.com/en/collection/847269567/Commander-Calthyx

That's the link I would use.

Hope this helps, and if not, some example links would help,

Note: I'm not part of zam, and unsure if they will be adding wiki page links to automatically go to the appropriate database page or not, but they have done that on several parts of several games, and may be more of what you are looking for. I just posted what I would do in your case to fix the bad links right away.

Thank you for the response. I just copied the code from the page for Freemarch and changed the item names in the link text (the items on the Freemarch page WORK). That's the part I can't figure out. Do I link to those items with the full explicit link (http://rift.zam.com/en/search.html?q=Commander+Calthyx#Collections)? Or can I still use the short links? If so how? I have been using the Wiki Help and Documentation but it isn't helping me on this.

Link Example for Iron Pine Peak page: On the Achievements list the last achievement points to a wiki page:
http://rift.zam.com/wiki/Rift_Achievement:Tracks_in_the_Snow

but when clicked actually takes you to the database page:
http://rift.zam.com/en/achievement.html?riftachievement=2146251895

You can see one of the achievements is red (You and What Army?), as if it does not exist. And when you click it takes you to a blank 'add this' page. However, this achievement does actually exist on the database (http://rift.zam.com/en/achievement/1386093277/You-and-What-Army?).

Now both these achievements are using the exact same linking convention, but take you to differing places. This is what confuses me. Similarly with the artifacts, I linked thinking they would take you to the database side - which does have them all - but when clicked they try instead to take you to the wiki pages - which apparently don't exist.

Looks like you have to use the long form (link to the database), as I don't see a wiki section on collections, and from what little I can tell (not a rift player atm), adding wiki pages just seems redundant.

From what I can tell you'll have to use to the following form for the collections:
[http://skin.zam.com/db/whatever.html?id=1234 Link text]
or as an example:
[http://rift.zam.com/en/collection/847269567/Commander-Calthyx Commander Calthyx]

Ok, part of the issue is, as we bring the new db records online the linking of the wiki pages is not completed for the move. We are getting that done now.

Regarding db vs. wiki, they are actually 2 parts of the same whole. The top part of the page is generated from info in the db, what appears below is anything entered in the wiki content. The two coexist in the same big space but with very specific naming issues.

For instance, wiki for zone pages lived at "Zone Name (Rift Zone)" but now that the db has zone records the correct Wiki page name for that content is "Rift Zone:Zone Name". the content from the pure-wiki pages is being moved now. Give us a little time and it will be done (like, Boh is doing it right now).

When the db sees the content at the correct wiki name it will display and maintain it correctly. Since there are not THAT many zone pages we are moving them by hand.

After the next day or so, if you see a Zone link that is red, check the wiki content and make sure it is in the "Rift Zone:Zone Name" format and it will work. Certainly there will be a few links that were made manually with the old naming... they just need to be fixed.

If you see any links like Bludwyng mentioned above, please feel free to mention that here so that we can get them all taken care of. Thanks!
