No WarningFollow

#1 May 31 2011 at 12:04 AM Rating: Decent
To whom it may concern,

No warning or explanation was given to the locked thread of my FFXIV Linkshell. Considering I've never had a locked thread before in all my years participating in the online community, I'm surprised.

I took a moment again to read the Forum rules and it does say repeat posting is against the rules, but it also says in a short time. I did post multiple times in my own thread, but this was not in a short time. More like every other week or so.

The fact that it was locked doesn't bother me as much as the fact that the moderator who did this, left no note as to WHY it was locked and of course didn't even warn me that posting repeatedly would cause the thread to be locked (assuming this is the reason for it being locked)

Bottom line is, you guys moderating could be a little more flexible and communicate better I think. Now there's a locked thread in a forum section that is not very active so it will stay there for some time.

If anything is Spam, it's a locked thread that can't be updated and isn't going anywhere.

Best Regards,

Assuming this is the one you mean, they gave you a reason for why they locked your thread.

Ok...

Well you're not really giving me a lot of explanation either and I have more questions than answers now.

Honestly though, if this is the attitude of the staff behind ZAM now....forget it.

I thought I was being fairly polite and now I almost regret I was since I'm being called an "idiot" for "necroposting"

I understand rules for what they're meant to protect against but I see no real harm in what I've done up to this point and surely nothing that justifies being insulted.

Thanks for your time

Well, I'm not really staff here either, so I don't have a more full explanation. Just someone bored enough to go see if there was indeed an explanation you missed.

I'm sure that an employee around here will stop by this particular forum in the morning and get back with you on the whole thing. I'd suggest checking back tomorrow to see what they say.

My apologies to you then. Your green color and seemingly special title I figured you for staff of ZAM. heheh

Thanks for pointing that out in the thread.

No worries. I can see how you'd think that. As an explanation, the color is related to the karma system here and the title was received when I hit 10,000 posts.

1. 14 of your 17 posts are in the locked thread and this one, meaning you haven't made much of an attempt to integrate yourself into the community other than pushing your LS. Generally frowned upon.

2. You necroposted (posting in a thread that has been idle for more than two weeks). Generally frowned upon.

3. You repeatedly bumped your own thread for recruiting purposes. If people are interested, they will keep your thread going. Generally frowned upon (especially in conjunction with 1 & 2).

For the most part, these boards are user moderated, which goes into the Karma system and different colored names Poldaran mentioned. In addition to that, Kao is fairly mild tempered and he isn't an FFXIV admin, meaning he had no reason to be on the FFXIV boards unless he was responding to a reported post. Given Kao's comment, you were probably reported more than once and on more than one occasion.

And no, I'm not an admin either.

I locked it. It was in violation of forum rules section XI "Deliberate forum content disruption" Specifically the section on Necroposting. Yes it was reported more than once. I didn't issue a seperate warning. The thread lock WAS the warning. If it bothers you to see it there I can certanly remove the thread.

It's 30 days iirc. There might be an unwritten rule about a few weeks. I believe the actual, "This is a necropost" message comes if a post is made > 30 days after the previous post.

To be fair, a lot of us have similar threads in the FFXI server forums that we do the same thing with. Rather than create a new post, we just hit a reply with "hey we're still looking for X!" In those low traffic forums, it seems like it'd be more of a disruption to have duplicate threads only a few lines apart.

(Although... no LS in FFXI are really recruiting any more because everything can be done with under 18 these days, so I don't think such bumping has happened in some time.)

Ok well it's meaningless debating all these points about my inadecuate participation on the forums, especially if people are going to defend the admin who goes around calling people "idiot".

I've never heard of such nonsense as necroposting on a thread that only has been a week or so without a new post. And I wasn't just bumping my own thread for the sake of it moving....what....2 or 3 slots higher? Again, not a very active forum section.

You lock threads as a warning? Not really as efficient as simply saying "Please don't do this" and most people will respond with "My bad, won't happen again." Not hard to do and makes you look a lot less rude than just locking and calling people names.

It is more disruptive I think going around locking threads and insulting the "community", forcing them to make another thread, if they even care to again, and I don't.

Have fun guys,

D

I will not comment on other parts, but this I thought I'd point out.

To be fair, it's in the forum rules.

Quote:
Necroposting: The act of posting in an extremely old thread for the sole purpose of bringing it to the foreground of the forum to disrupt the existing threads is considered necroposting, and is prohibited. Extremely old is a subjective term, to be determined by the administrators. Threads that are legitimately, or accidentally necroposted in may be left at the discretion of the admin. Deliberately necroposted threads will be returned to the page from where they came, and may be locked if necessary.
Bolding mine. Locking the thread was definitely within stated policy. Especially if they received multiple complaints about the necro.

Why? Are we supposed to defend you, the person whose only stake in Zam is as his own personal advertising hub? Or maybe we should stick up for someone we actually know and care about, and who contributes to the community here, instead of just trying to use it for his own personal gain.

Wait, is that rhetorical?

I'm absolutely confident that there have been times where, if Kaolian could have reached through his monitor and bopped me on the nose...hard...he would have. That doesn't mean he doesn't have a reason for what he does.

Seems to me there's a fine line between bumping a recruitment thread with an update telling people that you're still recruiting and updating on what (if anything) has changed in your recruitment needs and just bumping a thread with silly one-liners to keep it at the top. You were on the "silly one liner bumping" side of that line.
