Possibly Wrong Section - Confirm Email For Contest?Follow

#1 Oct 04 2012 at 1:05 AM Rating: Decent
If this is the wrong section, I apologize. I'm not entirely certain where it would go.

I'm trying to figure out if the email I got concerning the recent Amazon gift card survey giveaway contest thingy is legit. It says it's from research@zam.com, says I won, and asks me to confirm my mailing address. If it is legit, do I just reply to the email with my mailing address to get my prize? Do I send an email to another address? How does this work?

Can you forward that to accounts@zam.com and let me look at it?

It's a big site, and it is certanly possible that i missed a contest somewhere, but I don't see any survey type contests listed in the news feeds in the past few weeks. If you entered such a contest here, then yes, it could very well be legitimate. If you didn't enter any such contest (and just having an account doesn't generally enter you into a contest due to legal requirements and whatnot) then it probably is the worlds oddest phishing attempt. Thats not an e-mail I've seen used before, though it could certanly be a new one. I've asked in our admin section if anyone knows anything about this, if possible hold off for a day or so before you decide what to do. I'd be leaning towards it not being normal though. if you like, forward that e-mail as an attachment to kaolian@allakhazam.com and I can take a look at the header info and see if it came from us or not.

The contest was posted on Wowhead (where I entered it from) and I've seen it on a couple other sites on the network, like DayzDB. I forwarded the email to both of you. The contest page I used to enter was http://www.wowhead.com/news=206433/play-games-answer-this-survey-and-win

It seems legit enough but the internet has turned me into such a suspicious cynic, I don't trust anything I read anymore. lol

There was a games survey in the news links a few weeks/month ago that had a drawing for those who entered, and I think it was for an Amazon giftcard.

Whoever authorized that crap needs to be fired. The way that BS was handled I would expect from a noname fansite looking to rip people off, not from ZAM. After you filled out the survey you then had to categorize a bunch of games in whatever way made sense to you, yet the categorization UI was complete crap, and the submission process timed out every time you went through it, forcing you to email another company with the results. It was so poorly done I honestly though it was a scam when I was done. The fact that this person's being asked to confirm a mailing address for a digital gift card code just adds to the suspicion.

Based upon further information, it does indeed appear it is legitimate, so congratulations!

Regarding the way the contest was implemented, the main concern was that the zam people didn't know about the contest since it appeared on the wowhead side of things, which added to the confusion. As the contest is only open to certain countries, the address is required as a verification of residancy of some sort. There is definitly room for improvement in our contest process, and it is something that is being looked into. Generally when they fall into the category of "we get paid and some of our users get something of monitary value" they tend to get implemented without perhaps as much advanced testing as one might desire. Especially when it is marketing types doing the implementing.

Thanks for your help! I went ahead and sent my mailing address so we'll see what happens. If nothing else I guess I helped bring some issues within the administration that need to be worked on? lol

To Raolan, I didn't have any issue at all submitting the survey, or the categorization thing. Maybe I got lucky.
