No, it's part of a multi-phase process. Phase 1.

Finish it first, then put it online. Not the other way around.

I mean honestly, can you really look at that and say without lying that that bar is something you want to see on a website you're visiting? Because I don't believe that.

We're pushing a change that will stick the bar to the top of the window instead of scrolling down with you. This also allows you to scroll down the menu if you can't get to the bottom stuff.

If anyone sees new bugs, or has new feedback, I'll be checking in over the weekend.

Sticking it to the top of the page, where it scrolls with the page has helped alot. If not alleviated, it at least mitigated most of my concerns, other than the look doesn't seem to match many skins. It at least got rid of the flickering menu, when I'm trying to navigate, simply by scrolling down the page a little bit.

Also nice that you can see the entire menu now by scrolling down.

Is the rest of the menu at least going to be migrated there? The 2 menu bars right next to each other when both of them are half empty looks really bad.

Oh, I also can't go to the wow.allakhazam.com part of the site by changing www to wow anymore as that logs me out and logging in only takes you to zam.com. Edit: Nevermind, I just can't go to wow.allakhazam at all without being logged out which means I am now apparently stuck with the zam.com skin which is even worse than the wow skins...

And is a complete redesign of the site likely to ever happen?

You actually don't have "less stuff."

The WoWHead bar has two log in options, to Zam's one, but they've decided to make them graphics instead of a simple link.

Once you're logged in, it's still just your user name with associated menu (and you actually show karma, which is something you stopped doing with the forums a long time ago. It's still an existing value though).

Then you have a feedback button. Fine, that's a dedicated system, but in terms of the support side of things, a Zam equivalent would be a link to PM admins or the feedback forum button. Actually, I've always felt the fact that you had to go searching for the actual Admin names to PM was always an issue with the forum.

Finally, it's a language button. Which Zam's forums have.

So really, it's actually just one less button. You've just chosen not to bring the other features to the bar, unlike what you've done with WoWHead.

And if the devs don't want to, that's fine. But it's a choice that's made in terms of what they want to support, not what features are there that can be supported. Let's call a spade a spade.

That said, the sticking bar is way, way less irritating.

Still any answer as to why FFXI and FFXIV are all the way in the middle of the Antarctic? Could they at least be ABOVE the "click more" button?

I really really really don't want to have two bookmarks to ZAM.

What "rest of the menu"? You mean what Wowhead has? Not right now, those functions are ones that were already native to Wowhead. I am not privy to the final design. Heck, it probably hasn't been nailed down yet. I'll be sure to pass on your concerns about the dead space.

Nothing is ever static. The site is aging. Change will probably happen.

Decisions were made by people higher up the food chain than me. FF and the EQ's aren't going above the fold.

Separate post, because this seems to be a bug.

Aethien wrote:

I can't reproduce this. I can manually change the www in www.zam.com to wow and get redirected to http://wow.allakhazam.com/ just fine, still logged in. Can anyone else make it happen? What browser, etc etc. If I can get repro conditions I can probably get it fixed.

It seems to have fixed itself after being logged out of the site for an hour or two.

Like that, the two empty menu bars look ridiculous and unfinished which, again, gets me back to my earlier complaint (along with the this isn't the final design yet part of your post) of why on earth would you put something on the site if it isn't finished?

Edit: It does seem like I am no longer appearing on any recent visitor lists anymore though.

Oh, I get what you mean. No, those aren't going there. The bar is for the Unified Login and account management. Just like on Wowhead and Hearthhead, the site-specific stuff stays separate. It's like One Bar to Rule Them All. I'll mention it, but we're probably stuck with it for a bit.

You're our dirty little secret. Just kidding... can't repro that either, hmmm.

Why does there even need to be a fold at all?

This is seriously making me question whether I want to renew my premium. ..... I probably will anyway because I can't stand the ads, but it's like you guys really don't give a poo about the FF games by dumping them at the very bottom, even though the people MOST likely to switch between two of the ZAM sites are the FF players.

Everyone else is more likely to come in via one bookmark to their main landing page, and stay there and just navigate between the bread crumbs to various sub forums. I still play two games and I have the old XI site bookmarked and I flip flop between that and XIV for the forums and databases.

I mean, at least give us some means of customizing it or something (like with all that blank space you guys just added.) All I want is a quick way to get to the XIV forums from XI, or the XI forums from XIV, so I don't have to have two bookmarks to the same base website on my bookmarks toolbar.

Cancel premium, use adblock.

The ridiculous overreach with the profanity filter sealed the deal for me. Can't even call myself gay anymore.

Mention to whoever is in charge that it is some of the worst site design I have ever seen. It's so bad and the solution is so obvious I just don't get how anyone could possibly miss it.

This and the filter have been the straws that broke the camels back for me, especially given the complete silence on why the most ridiculous words are filtered.

Missed this earlier but I hope it's soon, this site is aging noticeably and it's starting to look and feel like it's held together by duct tape and wishful thinking, especially if you don't have premium.

I thought Kaolin's reply explained it clearly and logically enough: https://everquest.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=3&mid=140734930934384395#7 to make the site support the ads, they had to remove any such phrases on the list. Makes sense to me. Doesn't mean I like it, or agree with it. However, it was clearly explained.

Yeah, no. It makes sense for actual swearwords but words like fitting? Screw? Gay?

There are a lot of filtered words that make no sense for a filter no matter how strict and make conversation needlessly annoying.

And yea, I don't see on the recent visitors list, eventhough it's only been 7 min.

I see those words fine, maybe it's in the context of a longer phrase or it's because you put the question marks there. Not sure, but you found a way around it, it appears for clearly words that need a context to make them negative.

And Joph's question was never addressed at all - how is it that thousands of other forums don't have this insane overreach for filtering? Am I supposed to believe that no forums that discuss reproductive sex, homosexuality, religion, or do-it-yourself projects use AdSense? That's absurd. Meanwhile, I'm sure there are plenty of filtered words being posted in news articles, because how could there not be?

There's clearly a middle road here. I can't imagine "we just used the AdSense" list is anything other than the laziest route to filtering.

And then there's the issue of how pathetic the actual filter is, so that every post on the forums is just littered with ****s. Makes reading anything annoying, particularly because I never know what's been over-filtered, and then you can't judge tone on top of it. If it actually replaced the letters on a one-to-one basis, then you'd at least be able to guess in many cases. But NOPE.

It's beyond reasonable to be annoyed at it. And it's definitely reasonable to pull your financial support for the site. Chances are, I'll stop using the forum, because the novelty of the filter as a joke has worn off, and now it's just annoying to read anything here.

Pretty sure that the filter topic's been discussed to pieces. It's there, it was put in for good reason, and it's not going away. None of us particularly like the necessity either.

Catwho wrote:

I'm not in that loop, but I suspect it has to do with traffic.

It's not, relevant questions have been unanswered. Mainly what is complete list of filtered words and why is it so much more strict than any other filter outside of China and North Korea?

Nobody is arguing with the fact that it's been implemented and nobody has, what people are annoyed and frustrated by is the unexplained severity of the list and how dysfunctional it is.

I guess they downloaded their "bad words" list from a Russian mirror site.

Yeah. The whole "that's just the way it has to be" line would be more believable if the restrictions weren't so insane. No other forum I've ever posted on has had such crazy filtering. Not even close. I don't think anyone minds that a filter exists. It was fine when it was just blocking things like f--- and s--- and stuff. Now it blocks EVERYTHING and that's just stupid, annoying, and makes some posts very hard to read because you can't interpret the tone. ("Damn it" and "F- it" imply two different things but with the new filter there's no way to know which one was said.)

Protip: That's a terrible response to someone pointing out a huge unanswered question.

The users have discussed it to death. Your side of the equation has had an extremely limited amount of input in the issue. I'm sorry that you're caught between a rock and a hard place, I do. But that doesn't erase your responsibility to your users to at least explain the situation regarding it's horrible implementation.

If you don't want to, fine. But then you're going to have to deal with the users being unhappy with you for that. And consider we, as a group, largely don't blame Zam for the fact that a filter had to be implemented, I'm inclined to say that's pretty unwise.
