For kicks, I turned on Limbaugh for the first time in my life, just now. The first thing I heard was him reading an advertisement for a tax resolution company, telling the story of a woman who mistakenly didn't file her returns and now owes $20,000. Gbaji? Lololol

I'll have to wait for the transcript, but his website disgusts me already. His remarks likening Obama to Santa Claus, and the remarks made by Bill O'Reilly along the same lines (Obama supporters "wanting stuff") sicken me. It's just so adolescent. Attack the president's policies if you don't agree and offer alternatives. Don't wage war on half the nation just because you didn't get your way.

Limbaugh doesn't do politics - no one would listen to him if he did. He's a shock-jock radio host.

If I put on my tinfoil hat I can imagine that the nations political atmosphere started becoming so toxic and divisive at about the same time that Limbaugh started growing in popularity. Miserable people love to have their grievances given credence by some drug-induced fat guy on the radio. Don't listen to him.

This is the most sane conservative response I've seen to what went wrong. I still think they miss some fundamental mechanics and blame it almost entirely on the campaigns (with a brief nod to Hispanics) but it makes some good points especially when discussing the style of candidates to avoid (and which have cost the GOP seats for the last couple cycles).

"Excellence in Broadcasting". It's the name of the producer of Limbaugh's show (and I think exclusively Limbaugh's show).

My favorite part of that is this:

Quote:
but one poor answer in a debate finished him

said in regards to Todd Akin. It wasn't a poor answer; it was an absolutely ignorant one. It was completely false and worded in a very hostile way, but it illustrates a lack of understanding of basic science that is prevalent in the party and that's barely touched on in the article, except to say that

Quote:
Many commentators will now rush to declare Republicans an endangered species and pin the blame for the party’s woes on conservative ideas.

Conservative ideas are not the problem. Making up their own version of science to confuse people so they get on board with them is. Fifty or so years ago maybe Todd Akin would have been accepted as the authority on the female reproduction system because nobody really knew better. They didn't have access to things like the internet where they could get information from real doctors who were experts in their field. It's a new game, and Repulicans need to make drastic changes to how they play it. That kind of ignorance will not be tolerated by educated people in the elections going forward.

#2 strikes me as especially true. A lot of the social conservative ideas are a bit less popular these days than in the recent past, especially among the younger crowd. Even though someone may not agree with the idea, many may be fine with accepting them in a candidate I suspect (assuming s/he has other redeeming qualities of course). Presenting them in a way that isn't so alarmist would make a huge difference.

You know try something like "unborn child is a victim too, and it's not their fault" instead of "it's not legitimate rape and it's a gift from God."

No idea on the veracity of this but on the radio up here in Canada this morning, they were making fun of some Republicans who were complaining about Obama winning and were talking about moving to Canada.

Yeah, it seems like a reasonable articulation of that position could be, "I just really believe in my heart that it's a human life. And while I understand that restricting abortion is an infringement on the rights of the mother, I think that the value of the life and the child's rights outweigh the other position."

You don't even have to bring religion into it - secular humanists and non-evangelicals have a strong universal value of human life as well. You could also, you know, have a plan that includes (a) increased funding for free birth control (to limit the need for abortions in the first place) and (b) increased funding for adoptive services and such, to help out the women who are forced to carry to term.

But then, that's not a position that's a winner in state politics, so you'd have to take a hard line against abortion in the early part of your career, and then tack center for a national election. A flip-flop that people would also jump all over.

I love the idea of a extreme right-winger moving to Costa Rica, a country that abolished its military 60 years ago to fund public education instead.

One can only hope a fair number of boomers die off before 2016 and we can make some real progress.

You've got 20 years before your Boomers die off in any significant numbers. Oh wait, make that 16.5 years, your national life expectancy being lower than every other developed nation with our hideously oppressive and unfair half the price healthcare system.

Maybe this is off, but given that polling showed that the overwhelming majority of people in other countries (Canada, France, England, Austrailia, etc) would have thrown their support behind Obama... isn't it possible that his success could be evidence of a recalibration in terms of what "moderate" means in America to something more recognizable to people in pretty much any other democracy on earth?

It just seems weird to me that anyone would campaign on religious fundamentalism/woman hating/gay hating/poor hating etc and then be surprised they didn't win. I mean, really women + gays + poor people = more than 50% of the population of ANY country...

Expecting people to vote against their own interests consistently seems like a bad strategy, even if it has worked in the past.
You forgot to add anyone vaguely foreign looking to your equation.

I still say that Romney was just thrown to the wolves and was meant to lose, much like Kerry.

The question I keep hearing is "If not Romney, who else would have won?"

I think the answer is "One of the guys who was smart enough not to run this cycle". You had several potential serious contenders who stayed out, probably realizing it wasn't the cakewalk the GOP media was claiming and not wanting to poison their brand with failure.

They don't really need a reluctant hero, either. Besides, his record isn't going to win him votes with all the folks who helped with an Obama win this year. They are going to have to look to someone else if they want to take back the presidency in 2016.

The honest answer is "no one who gets through the GOP primary process" The Iowa Evangelical/NH Libertarian/SC Racist Gun nut whipsaw is a real problem for them. At least the DEM crazies are fairly evenly distributed throughout the process.
