As John Smith so famously said (based from 2 Thes 3:10), "He who does not work, neither shall he eat." Everyone needs a hand (or handout) once in a while. However, as his quote implies, even in dire circumstances, such as famine in the face of a struggling colony, there were thouse who either thought themselves too good to labor or were too lazy to join in the group effort towards success.

Right, there were. WASPS.. They're still at it today. There is no moral side of safety nets aside from the part where we don't let people die or live in miserable circumstances because we aren't selfish children. Hard work is no the strongest correlate with economic success. LUCK is. This fantasy that hard working people prosper is what destroys capitalism, not the safety net. Does it correlate? Yes, of course. All other things being equal the person who works hardest will succeed. The problem is all other things aren't equal.

That reminds me back from my previous diatribe, I don't know if I've ever heard a Latino Catholic speak about Pauline Christianity. Religion pretty much begins and ends with the Gospels.

Hard to imagine Jesus or Mary saying "Starve to death, slack-***".

It's because they're poor, not because they're brown. Poor White Catholics have a similar moral understanding of their faith, although lacking the "New and Improved, now with more psuedo pagan Goddesry!" packaging. As Latino Catholics acquire wealth and status, they'll want to prevent other people from infringing on that, and they'll bend their entire worldview until that makes sense. That train is never late.

It's easy to make sweeping generalizations about the state of people we look down upon in America and cherry pick quotes to support those positions, but that was neither the intended use of his quote nor of that particular verse. That situation was drastically different than what we are facing today. There aren't enough jobs for people to get back to work - it's not that people don't want to help the colony thrive.

The majority of people we are talking about in America are out of work because of things that we did - dating back decades when we first discovered this amazing thing called outsourcing. We have systematically taken jobs out of America so that the corporations can cut costs (read: rich can get richer), and then some folks want to justify their disdain for the struggling middle and lower classes by using these kinds of quotes that aren't even applicable? It's reprehensible. If there was an abundance of jobs available and people were still staying on welfare instead of getting back to work, it would be one thing. That's just not the case.

Now, I'm not saying that there aren't people out there who game the system. There are, on ALL levels. But this attack on Americans who have really been handed a lot of **** as we move towards this "global economy" is insulting. You can't strip Buy American clauses out of bills and then complain that Americans are just lazy and want a handout when they don't have a job.

What's ironic is that the above quote is much more acceptable than say, quoting Matthew 19:21. From the same book, but suggesting the rich redistribute their wealth is socialist and evil, right?

Eh, I won't pretend to have studied it extensively but I've visited Flea's old church in suburban Virginia for instance and the focus is definitely different.

Bill Maher is a comedian.
John Stewart s a comedian.
Rush Limbauh is an opinion leader in the GOP, and taken quite seriously by a large majority of GOP voters.

See the difference?

Not everybody does, unfortunately.

There's an app for that.

Okay, I lied, it's not an app. But "there's a website linked from a thread in an internet gaming forum for that" hasn't invaded popular lexicon to the same degree. Smiley: rolleyes

I wish there had been more national talk about Jill Stein. A lot of the things that she did and said resonated with me. She's fearless.

I voted for Obama because I didn't want to *not* vote for him and then feel responsible for a Romney victory and the subsequent regression to 1950, but if there had been a snowball's chance in hell of her winning I definitely would have gone Green this year.

You could have voted for her with the goal of helping her try to get 5% of the popular vote in order to secure public financing in the next Presidential race. Of course, she didn't get anywhere near that mark so you don't have to feel like you could have made a difference anyway. Smiley: tongue

Well okay, 1 of you didn't...

Making it bigger was pretty popular too...
