Thinking about buying the wife a digital camcorder for Christmas. Her digital camera is broken so she's been using her phone (which works but isn't ideal.)

I know almost nothing about camcorders. I know plenty about technology so I can figure out what is a good idea in general and I understand the specs but I could use some advice from people who are more versed in home movie makinginess.

Any suggestions? Price is an object but reasonably flexible if the higher prices come with significant, important advances.

for example. Obvious differences but is that really going to matter when she wants to film the kids school plays and gift opening?

I'm no expert but did the same shopping for my daughter for her upcoming child birth.

For the first one you linked, you are paying about $60 for the wifi option that is easily avoided with a usb cable. I saw that camera or one like it and the specs are lower/comparable to cameras at the price range of about $150-$190.

We bought this camera for 2 reasons - #1 it does full 1080p which most of the other camera's in its price range would not do; #2 while it had a lower optical zoom it was much better at focusing in on non-face objects (signs and price tags, etc)

It seemed like the variation in focus was drastic between models by the same brand and then the difference was much more noticable between brands.

My only concern for it is batterly life, it was batterly life.

I have no experiance or comment on the more expensive camera but thought I would share my thought process on the less expensive camera.

They're called "phones" now.
