If I've learned anything today, it's that the doctrine of Papal Infallibility probably comes in second to only the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception when it comes to Catholic things completely misunderstood by the world at large.
I think I understand the misunderstanding around Papal Infallibility (basically there are a ton of conditions that need to be met, and the last Infallible Edict was like in 1950 or something?), but what's misunderstood by Immaculate Conception? This is coming from a former Catholic, I always knew it as "Mary was untouched by even Original Sin, and remained sinless up through giving birth to Jesus, so only she was a proper vessel for Christ to come into world."
Is that right? I always understood it as a ham-fisted way of saying, even if some other virgin gave birth to a child (like Julius Caesar, who was said to be a virgin birth as well), only Mary alone was ever free of sin and thus able to birth the Messiah.
