iPhone tethering...?Follow

#1 Feb 15 2013 at 11:49 PM Rating: Good
There are a bunch of dorks, er, I mean nerds, no wait. A bunch of smart computer people on these forums Smiley: wink, and someone on another forum was wondering if iPhone tethering would be ok for her if she wanted to use it for medical transcription work. Because we're dealing with patient records, and HIPPA, and all that fun stuff, it has to be a secure line. Is iPhone tethering secure? Is it no different from me getting my internet through a cable sticking out of the wall?

Thanks!!

I think it's legal, but speaking from experiencing trying to support someone working from home on a tethered connection, it's horrible. We strongly suggest any of our telecommuters who are RDCing back into the hospital have a DSL or cable connection, because a tethered line is just *** for our systems.

Dictation files aren't huge, but they are MP3s and a couple dozen a day could quickly chew through a lower end data plan.

Apparently this person will be living in a... uh, camper type thingy? Anyway, and she'll be traveling. So having a dedicated cable or DSI connection isn't really an option.

Personally? It sounds horrible. But I was just asking because she piqued my curiosity, and I knew someone here would know about it. :)

Thanks, Cat!

Transmission of data from an iphone to a cell tower is automaticaly encrypted assuming the device is running at least IOS 5. The device itself is not encrypted by default, and unless she is storing the files on an encrypted media partition of some sort, there is a risk in the event of loss or theft of the device itself.

Is iPhone tethering secure?

No wireless technology is secure.

Is it no different from me getting my internet through a cable sticking out of the wall?

It's *dramatically* different. Almost certainly not HIPAA compliant given the latest guidance on EPHI. There's an important question of it that matters at all, though. Practically, your friend is more likely to be hit by a comet than to have someone hijack her valueless transcription work.

Seriously? Smiley: oyvey

Sorry, couldn't resist. I've been sitting on an interview panel for the last week and the manner in which candidates have been stretching their economic support program chops to make them appear more knowledgeable has been ridiculous.

Honestly, I don't know the chick. She posted the question on another forum and I thought I'd check around here. For me, it's not so much a question of whether or not she will actually get hacked, but more can she get a job with an MT company with that type of connection.

And Paskil, I always get that damn acronym wrong!! Smiley: banghead

Because of the HIPAA compliance and HITECH issues, it boils down to what the MT company and the custodian of records are willing to do under their risk management policies. She needs to check with the MT company. The records custodian has a duty to keep the medical records safe. The MT company has the duty to the records custodian that any records given to the MT company are kept safe to the custodian's specifications.
