I now have a theory on lullabyes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXhADuDN610
most of them are not meant to be sung to your children after they have become verbal
they're like a father reading playboy or a slasher book in a very sweet voice to a preverbal baby
You sing them sweetly to preverbal babies, while getting to sing about how you'd like this little horror who cries and craps all day and DOESN"T LET YOU GET ANY SLEEP to suffer and die. Die.  DIE.

Translation of the German:
Sleep, my child, go to sleep that night,
looking out the window clean.
Indeed, the moon, who brought you happy, and you are the stars shine.
sleep my little one, sweet dreams, sometimes you're in paradise!
Because equal the door opens, and a monster is coming to you!
With its eleven eyes it looks at you,
and sneaks your bed ran!
You lie still, do not move,
the monster you scratched your face!
His fingers are long and thin,
do not be defensive, "it has no meaning!
And it giggles like crazy when it squeezing your neck! -
You cry, but you're at home alone
! stabs the monster's eyes out
! Then you are silent and that is good
! It bites you in the throat and drink your blood
without blood you're as pale as chalk,
then it eats your guts!
your little bed, with blood all red,
the sun is coming up and you're dead
sleep, my child sleep, a now,
the sky stand the Sternelein!
sleep, my child, sleep quickly
your bed is a carousel!
Sleep , my child, sleep in now,
otherwise it is not the monster inside!

Or Germans are just lunatics.

When the little guy was still an infant, I realized that my lullaby catalog was pretty slim. So I mainly sang him a mixture of hymnals and soft rock hits from the '70s (go go, James Taylor).

The articles are boring enough to put adults to sleep, so should work better on babies.

I remember being upset for the poor blackbird with blind eyes and broken wings that my mother sang me to sleep with.

My old boss told me he ordered some lullaby albums with old rock songs, like Queen and Journey. I'm not sure if they had the lyrics or not, but a delicate "We Are The Champions" would probably induce more positive dreaming than traditional death and torture lyrics.

I hope the Hey Song is on there, too.

Rockabye Baby

Lyric-less versions of popular music generated in the style of children's lullabies. I personally have the Pink Floyd disk for my boy and it's pretty decent.

I started singing "Three Little Birds" to Thom when he was three, since he had been watching Shark Tale.

The Beatles' "Golden Slumbers" was the lullabye of choice when my son was a wee one.

Sometimes, you don't even necessarily need a sweet voice.

Just a bad-*** one.

I just play Kubrick movies in the background for the boy. He's going to LOVE "Signing in the Rain" when he gets older.

To make a long story short, I don't take any responsibility for anything I post here. It's not news, it's not truth, it's not serious. It's parody. It's satire. It's bitter. It's angsty. Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.
