A baby in Mississippi born with the HIV virus has apparently been cured.
Quote:
A doctor gave this baby faster and stronger treatment than is usual, starting a three-drug infusion within 30 hours of birth.

According to the article there has only been one other person 'cured' of AIDS. That was a rare instance of a bone-marrow transplant from a rare individual that is immune to the HIV virus.

Nice story to see first thing on a Monday morning. Smiley: smile

Probably not. Probably prophylactic treatment for a non infected child. We'll see, I guess.

To make a long story short, I don't take any responsibility for anything I post here. It's not news, it's not truth, it's not serious. It's parody. It's satire. It's bitter. It's angsty. Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

Yeah, but the baby was born in Mississippi. Sounds like a worse fate.

It's not really "cured;" it's "the virus is now found in such small amounts that we can no longer detect it." In the same way that the person "cured" of AIDS wasn't really cured, so much as "We can't detect it any more." It is quite possible that the virus will make a comeback at a later time. It's not advisable for either patient to start sharing blood or having unprotected sex.

Er, doubly so for the baby.

You might be able to get a pint out of one. If you squeezed it real hard.

I doubt the 'cured' baby will be having unprotected sex anytime soon - but it is Mississippi. The medical professionals used the term cured - so I'm going with that.

Technically, an unrelated doctor who read the study says it's close to a cure, if not a cure, as we've seen Smiley: tongue I always take "breakthrough" articles like this with a grain of salt. Science makes amazing gains overtime; but it's incredibly rare to see a huge jump from "Nothing" to "Eureka!" without a ton of other details going unmentioned.

You can get more if you force feed it pureed spinach.

Unless you simply disbelieve the article I'm not sure what is to be taken with a grain of salt. It is what it is; a child that was HIV positive no longer is.

Of course you can't prove a negative. There will always be a chance that the HIV virus could be hiding somewhere dormant in this child. She could even be unknowingly re-infected. Her mom is a known carrier.

Still, the distinction of being cured is one that has only been bestowed upon one other individual thus far in the search for this deadly disease. It's not an earth-shattering breakthrough, but it's advancement...an advancement with a big dollop of hope attached to it.

Don't be a downer. Smiley: glare
