Everyone is screwed up somehow, doesn't mean we need to give everyone counseling and pills for the rest of their life.

No, it doesn't. Fortunately, no one's making that argument. That said, there are some people who do need care for their entire lives. A profession doing a poor job of distinguishing one from another is a problem, but on balance, you'd probably want to err on the side of treating people who don't really need it rather than missing people who do.

There's so much grey area there I wonder how they deal with it sometimes. Obviously not as we'd all like sometimes. Making a call on a kid like that's borderline or what not can't be easy or fun.

This.

When I was undergoing training to supervise Autistic children and adults we covered the spectrum. Quite amusingly every single person on the course felt a little freaked at first to see that we all demonstrated some attributes of Autism. Thing is .. it's about the quantity and severity of those attributes.

There is a major difference between a meltdown of an Autistic child who has been unable to accept a change in plan versus a spoilt or unruly child who does not have a toy they want. A child who is truly autistic will have parents who are concerned about the childs future. Will they mix as an adult? What will happen when the parents die? A child will get away with behaviors that are not widely accepted in adults.

You need to draw the line somewhere and for me, it's where the person is diagnosed because they need lifelong assistance. Not because they show a mild attribute of the autism spectrum and go on to live a healthy and independent life.

So to paraphrase myself "The survey is a crock"

For every human behaviour there is a spectrum. Every Human will be moving around on the spectrum somewhere. It's when a child or adult is consistently up one extreme end of the spectrum that they might feel it impacts negatively on themselves, and a psychiatrist will diagnose a "mental disorder". For instance take gregariousness as a spectrum. Up one end, You don't want to talk to or look at anyone. Up the other end you cannot shut up around other people.

Depending on the context of your life, and your other behaviour spectrums, being up the non talkative end might mean you are a normal person who is stressed out or angry and just wants a time-out to decompress. Or If you're up there all the time, combined with other behaviors, you might have: brain damage; Agrophobia; Social Phobia; Schizophrenia; PTSD, Dissociative Disorder; Depression; Autism, etc. Being up the extremely talkative end might mean you're a normal person seeing someone you love for the first time in ages, you're celebrating a success, or you're drunk. Or if you're up there all the time, and given other contexts to your life, you might have: Borderline Personality Disorder; Manic-Depression; Schizophrenia; Autism where you can't conceive of other humans needing a turn at talking or of getting tired of you; brain damage; Tourettes etc.

My daughter gets home, strips down to her underwear and tackles and bites the dog. I don't think she's autistic, just a *****.

He possibly has something wrong with him that's really interfering in his life, and his doctors can't or haven't pinned it down for him yet. It'll be driving him nuts. Once you have the correct diagnosis, you can Do something to alleviate the symptoms.

The only thing he has is "need attention" syndrome. He's fine. Very normal, very healthy.

No, what I have is "I live in a world populated and controlled by people who are almost exclusively as stupid and unaware as children". Pretty common among those of my intellectual strata. There are no content, happy, well adjusted very smart people. Gather 10 4 year olds, and allow them to make all of your household decisions for a year and at the end of that you'll get a small taste of how I view the world.

If you're so smart, how come you're letting four year olds make all your household decisions? Show some backbone!

Delusions of Grandeur thread now? How did you view the world when Disney security was dragging your foamy mouth out of the park? Did 10 4 year olds conspire to get that done?

They actually drag you under the park, through a tunnel, and then up out of a parking lot a surprisingly long way from the park. I don't have delusions of grandeur, you're confusing it with the lack of false modesty I also don't bother with. Of course, I realize it's expected to treat others as intellectual equals even when they aren't, but I'm not going to. Mainly because the expectations of idiots don't mean that much to me.

Yea, the problem is too much unsupervised access to Google searches. I'm sure the kid is fine, just interested in learning about various human conditions.
