Quote:
The letter from Saeed Abedini to his wife described in detail how he's been mistreated at Iran's notorious Evin Prison. He described how he saw his face for the first time in the mirror of an elevator.

"I said hi to the person staring back at me because I did not recognize myself," Abedini wrote. "My hair was shaven, under my eyes were swollen three times what they should have been, my face was swollen, and my beard had grown."

The pastor explained how, despite his situation, he is trying to focus on "forgiveness." He said he forgave the "interrogator who beat me" as well as the doctor who "did not give me the medication that I needed."

Up until this last week, the White House was ignoring the issue. The best way to place pressure on the White House is to put pressure on your representatives. Doing nothing is tantamount to saying "Ehh, just let him rot."

Do you mean when we sow fields with the big bags of cash that would obviously exchange hands here if this is consummated?

Hahahahahahaha. Oh, Mr. Smith, you're so quaint. Your representative doesn't give a fuck about you or this guy. What is it you imagine happens? First of all there are usually around 11 staffers between your letter and your representative. You don't have to find one of them that thinks your issue is important, you have to find 11 of them who do. Trust me on this, 10 of them throw anything on this issue in the trash, with the possible exception of reps with actual ties to the guy.

That's true, they'll send a "thank you for expressing your concern about this very important issue" form letter first.

They value our input, my form letter said that exactly. It was even signed!! Well, it was a stored and printed signature, but I'm sure it was added by whoever wrote it in the first place, after due consideration. Smiley: nod

So he was preaching, they didn't like it and threw him in jail? Why are we getting messed up in this again? Smiley: confused

I mean it's nice he's a dual citizen and all, but it seems like this is more trouble than it's worth.

So Kerry can have an "accomplishment" early in his tenure because he wants to run in '14. Don't be silly, what other reason is there?

I guess I was hoping for something more; they could at least throw in some nuclear smuggling or something. The whole Iran storyline is showing its age.

I agree that it was better with 9 foot tall kings and mutant blade hand giants.

Hey, when I was in grade school, Bill Clinton sent me a form letter in response to my apparent concern about smokestack pollution. I also got autographed pictures of himself and Al Gore.

So, you might also get an autographed photo.

Correct

Maybe this is a difference between countries with non compulsory voting, and countries with compulsory voting. In Australia, if you send a letter to your representative or an Executive, the politician assumes that statistically 59 other constituents agree with the letter, but have not bothered to write in to say so. Emails are barely multiplied, because they are so much easier to do on the spur of the moment. But their opinion on a matter is still at least collated statistically by a staffer as free poll information.

Then they send a form letter and throw your sin the trash. That said, it's a better system, structurally. Too bad is easily as corrupt as ours.

Yeah, I really don't like that. Smiley: frown Two present glaring examples of corruption are how stalled up action on ACC is, and how we treat our Asylum seekers that arrive by boat. (Union bosses don't like refugees, they have this "common sense" delusion that they inflate the unemployment numbers significantly for long periods of time, contrary to all statistical evidence.)

Obama sent me a signed Christmas card a while back (think it might have been last year or the year before. Guess he appreciated my help in '08. Doubt I'll be getting one going forward... maybe in 2015.

Typically they put the letter into an excel file as a issue tally mark when it's reelection time. So, while your singular letter is worth very little, it can be useful for marketing purposes.

If no one with money cares, yes. If you're very concerned about when they declare National Potato Day, you can really have a lot of influence.
