Boston marathon 2013

Seems that two bombs went off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon today: http://www.wcvb.com/news/local/metro/Explosions-reported-near-Boston-Marathon-finish-line/-/11971628/19757044/-/ktnc1wz/-/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Quote:
wo explosions have been reported near the Boston Marathon finish line on Boylston Street as thousands of people gathered for the race, and there are reports of injuries.

The blasts happened at about 2:50 p.m. near the intersection of Boylston and Exeter streets. Store fronts have been blown out, and there have been reports of dozens of injuries.

Witnesses said several victims lost limbs, the race was stopped and the area is being evacuated.

The first explosion happened across from the Lenox Hotel and the second blast was about 15 seconds later, witnesses said.

Many of the injured appeared to be spectators who gathered for the 117th running of the race.

NewsCenter 5's Sean Kelly said the impact of the explosions could be felt blocks away.

The victims were being taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Saw a graphic photo of it that The Atlantic linked. Lots of blood, some lost shoes (limbs?), people on the ground getting treated. Looked terrifying.

And after a frantic series of frantic text messages everyone is fine. Lil' bro finished 83rd, so Smiley: thumbsup for him. They had already left the finish area before stuff blew up.

Phew.

Any news on whether it was deliberate or accidental?

If they're saying bombs I guess it's deliberate.

I'm hearing that it was two separate blasts, and considering the location, it seems doubtful that it was an accident.

I've also seen some unconfirmed reports of police finding tertiary undetonated devices, and that they were telling people to stay away from trashcans. Guess we'll see.

EDIT: They're blowing one up in a controlled detonation now, apparently.

Seeing twitter light up like a Christmas tree. Sounds deliberate, and there are various reports that other devices were found unexploded:

I don't particularly trust reports from they.

That's pretty ****** up. I was planning on running the New York Marathon in November, and I'd hate to think this was a test run. Kind of a selfish look on the events and such I know, but it is what it is.

It's hard to stop listening to the EMS feed:
http://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/6254

I just heard they're checking out a possible third explosion, but that it may be unrelated and due to an electrical issue.

I tried for like an hour to get a call through to my kid - too much cell traffic. I just reached him a few minutes ago.

My two Boston friends have both checked in. They're safe but spooked.

I had just finished homework when I walked in to tell my husband I was good for us to go to the gym.... he had Something Awful up, where a thread had already started, and was like "THIS JUST HAPPENED" - I didn't comprehend the graphic photos at first, because there's always colorful crap on the ground after people finish races (they get powder tossed on them in some races...) Only after the reports of injuries and lost limbs came in did I realize that was blood, not powder.

Going to have nightmares tonight. Smiley: frown

Gosh that one image with all the blood on the ground is just awful to look at. Until that point I was thinking "meh, no big deal".

Horrible.

Luckily, my Mom, was at Heartbreak hill & everyone in her running club is accounted for. Fiance was @ work in Cambridge. A little sketched out about working tonight in Government center, way more so than on 9/11. First year in the last 5 we didn't go to the Sox game on Patriot's day & watch the marathoners after.

That is a very large explosion for a device in a garbage can. It has to be either militery grade, or a large pile of commercial grade blasting agent. Either way is troubling. That and the multiple targets. Major intel failure here for certain if no one got wind of something that big going down. Sounds like they got at least one device fairly intact for forensic analasys, and they appear to have a suspect, though at this point who knows.

Hope everyone here and all they know are safe.

We're all fine, we were gardening at home 20 miles away. Not that any of you assholes care about me, but Nexa is fairly well liked.

Glad to see that Nexa and her brood are safe and sound. (You too, Smash.)

Security measures slightly went up on the military bases over here. Husband said that he may be getting home a bit later than usual since additional checkpoints are going up on the base.
