Quote:
Saxton, a junior studying classics and religious studies, said his sermon was meant to convey that “if you dress like a *****, act like a *****, you’re probably going to get raped.”

“I think that girls that dress and act like it,” Saxton said, “they should realize that they do have partial responsibility, because I believe that they’re pretty much asking for it.”

Obviously Mr. Saxton doesn't have a very heavy course load this semester.

Eh, every major college campus has a crazy preacher on the quad saying the same things.

Free speech and all that ****, let him show what a douche he is. Majoring in religious studies, are we? Well, you've got the condemnation of women down pat, at least...

He probably would be more successful if he delivered the message like this guy.

Really? I don't recall that at all. Militant lesbians, yes. People demonstrating because the janitors only made $12/hr, yes. That girl who was "a poet" who everyone laughed at who just won a Pulitzer. The slackers who are now members of Congress, not to mention those who are in real positions of power now.

The university I went to (University of Delaware)? Yes. We called him "Kirkbride Jesus Guy" because he stayed outside the Kirkbride building and listed various groups going to hell; Catholics, liberals, unsubmissive women, the "pimps and sluts" who partied all weekend, etc.
The universities I've worked at (UF and USF?). Yep. The guy outside Turlington Plaza at UF was toned down a bit compared to Kirkbride Jesus Guy, but still had his crazy days. We also had random other preachers show up: Brother Micah, for example, and his "It's Not OK to be gay" song. And let's not forget Gainesville is the base of operations of Terry Jones - he might not hate women, but he sure hates Muslims. In Tampa I've only seen one preacher on campus so far, but I usually walk by with my headphones on so I didn't hear what he says clearly. Seems to hate parties too, though. I'm sensing a common theme.

From personal experience, only the first guy echoed the comments in the OP; but the others are certainly arguing along the same lines.

There were always a few Hare Krishna giving out flowers in the Commons at my University. Does that count?

First of all, we all know "Delaware" is an imaginary place created on a Hollywood sound-stage. I've driven by "Delaware" on many occasions. Don't think I didn't notice the cardboard prop "buildings".

My college had a fire-and-brimstone preacher. I think he traveled the circuit from Illinois University, U of I and Eastern Illinois. He'd hang out in the quad and call the women Jezebels and warn us to give up our pernicious ways of drink, tobacco and whoring. People would spend a few minutes laughing at him, try to insult him and then get bored and wander off.

All your guys limit themselves to just the schools? I've seen one or two The End is Nigh preachers in, and around, Penn Station.

Downstate, if you're not on the campus, you're likely standing in a cornfield trying to save the souls of crows.

Isn't superman down there somewhere? We had some guys come back from a trip to Paducah, KY with some photos of themselves at some Superman cardboard cutout thing...

You're thinking Metropolis, IL which is waaaayyyyy downstate at the southern tip of the state. I'm talking more mid-way.

But everything south of I-80 is wild corn country anyway.

I don't know about Superman, but Cornfield Jesus tries to save the crows from their sinful stealing habits.

The rumor is that it's going to be 23 years sometime this year, maybe during summer.

Suddenly feel left out, we didn't have a crazy preacher person at our campus. Smiley: frown

We did have Optometry students. They'd come out of their building on sunny afternoons and ask for volunteers. Those foolish enough to follow them were found staggering about campus a couple of hours later, pupils all probed and dilated and stuff. The rest of us would simply point and laugh.

The things you do when your school doesn't have a football team... Smiley: rolleyes

This was the guy at Illinois: Preacher Dan. Probably the same guy Joph mentioned; he'd show up for a couple days per month and made the rounds at various schools. (The video would be better if the guy recording it wasn't such a douche, but you can get the gist).

Ah, well obviously I didn't read the linked Wiki. Maybe he reached his quota of saved souls. Or saw one too many Jezebels and finally snapped.

Oh, oh, maybe he snapped and went all Children of the Corn.

Or ... you know, Crotchety Geezers of the Corn.
