I'm looking for a new "joke a day" style webcomic. It doesn't have to update daily but what I'm not looking for is another serialized plot-based comic along the lines of Order of the Stick, Questionable Content, Girl Genius, Sluggy Freelance*, etc. Just a largely standalone comic to give me a few chuckles a few times a week. Also something still updating; I've already read the PBF archives.

Currently reading:
Bug Martini (formerly just 'Bug')
Basic Instructions
Cyanide & Happiness
Penny Arcade
Scenes from a Multiverse (I don't know why, it's rarely actually funny)
XKCD
I stopped reading SMBC because it's apparently even less entertaining than Scenes from a Multiverse.

Other stuff I'm sure I forgot without my tablet in front of me. Any suggestions?

*I used to like this back in the day when it WAS more of a 'joke of th day' format coupled with the plot but man that guy knows how to take characters and plot and just beat them into the ground until I can't care any more

I enjoy this one. It's probably a bit of an acquired taste sort of thing, though.

Can't help you, I only read Questionable Content, XKCD, and occasionally Penny Arcade.

I'm just here for the +1s.

Reminds me (well, the URL does, haven't clicked it) that Non-Adventures of Wonderella is on my "Already reading" list. At one update a week, I forget it's there until my Saturday reading.

Sadly, while I follow a fairly high number of them, the majority of the webcomics I read are serialized. The only one I might consider recommending is Shortpacked, but that's semi-serialized(at times it has long arcs, at times it's just jokes a few days in a row).

I suspect that the ability to do a one-off joke per strip is far different (and perhaps more difficult) than drawing out plots over years or even a decade+. If anything, it's easier to read a few stand alone strips and decide if it's "good" than serialized plots that take forever to resolve and have the benefit of their format to recover from clunky individual strips/plots. I remember hitting a point in Girls With Slingshots where I realized "This is stupid and I hate all of these people" but it was a gradual transition. Then again, it took me far too long to realize that the hit:miss ratio for SMBC was about one good comic every three months.

Gag a day is a format without soul or substance; disappointment is inevitable.

You could read the more recent Pictures For Sad Children, after the storyline wraps up.

Serialized comics are for authors without the wit or creativity to be judged strip by strip!

I'm surprised to hear you say that, Joph.

So surprised that to truly do it justice would require... oh, let's say a week.

He does daily-ish comics either focused around TF2, DOTA2, or another random game he's playing at the time.

Quick edit- Some times he has little story arcs but they only last a few comics

Make sure you have a vomit bucket close by.

ADMIN EDIT: Don't go looking for that one from work. yeah, I know it's not a link, but the [NWS] warning is likely warranted anyways.

That's fine. I don't mind a 3-5 strip "arc" or themed weeks or whatever. I just don't need another strip that requires its own Wiki.

Achewood if you've never read it. There are serialized arcs, but they're short. Plus: alt text!

Hark, a vagrant if you like geeky literature and history comics.

I was going to mention those.

Also, Wondermark, This Modern World, and Tom the Dancing Bug.

Also, freerepublic.com

Megacynics. Joke a day style, relatively new (only two years old I think?), and with a cute premise. (Canadian half brother and sister discover each other. He's a rich web 2.0 executive, she's an arty goth twenty years younger.)
