Annual EvaluationFollow

#1 Nov 12 2013 at 1:55 PM Rating: Good
I forgot what it's like to have a formal yearly evaluation. My last job was too small and loosey-goosey to bother with anything beyond "you did a great job" or "you ducked that one up" at the quarterly staff meeting.

Now I'm having to do a "self-evaluation" which is preparation for the actual evaluation my boss will give me and which gets archived into my permanent record here, so to speak. I guess it's used to determine promotions, but I'm still so new about the best I can hope for is a pay upgrade/downgrade to overtime exempt (more base pay, but expected to work 40+ hours without thinking about it. Right now, I can leave my laptop at work since I don't go past quittin' time.)

Does your company do annual evaluations? The Internet seems to have mixed opinions of the process.

Yeah, I actually just finished mine 10 minutes ago. It one of those Strongly Disagree/Strongly Agree type measurement scales, and for each questions I just had to check off what I thought matched me.

We don't do anything here. It was odd enough for me, to the point I actually sat my boss down the first year and did a little 10min thing with him so I could get some feedback. Since then I've generally not bothered, since it's not really worth the effort.

Feedback these days mostly comes from outside these days. People tell us we need more staff to meet their needs. We agree and ask for the money to hire more people, and that's usually the point where the conversation awkwardly changes topics.

You're all doing great.

When I had employees, I actually would put a fair amount of thought into their performance reviews. I liked to think it was helpful.

We have a standardized form and a policy that says everyone gets a performance review annually. If you don't get your performance review done you can't get your pay increase. The pay increase only goes up for 8 years though - after you're 'stepped out' it's hard to convince a supervisor that they should take the time to evaluate your performance.

I just finished my rough draft. For me most of the agonizing decisions were stylistic ones. Do they want declarative sentences, or should I use the personal pronoun? Smiley: confused In the end I said ***** it and used "I" all over the place because I hate imperative/declarative sentences in paragraph form.

Actual content was graded on "Super stellar amazing!" or "Meh, good enough" or "We need to talk..." I gave myself mostly "meh, good enough" ("Proficient") scores because I recall hearing that 80% of the company gets that anyway.

We have a review cycle every 6 months, which includes self evaluations. It's a pain in the butt, but actually does help. You'd be surprised how actually writing stuff down (like areas you think you did well and areas you think you need more work) helps to focus you. It's also your opportunity to remind your boss of the stuff you did over the last X months. I sometimes surprise myself because I think "gee, I kinda slacked this cycle", but then when I write out all the stuff I did, it's a pretty large and impressive list.

Setting goals for the next cycle helps as well. It also prevents your employment from being just one long mind numbing set of days doing the same thing. Set some special project type goals and it breaks up that monotony. It's a good thing!

Having said all of that, self evals only work *if* your boss reads them, uses them to write your eval, and then communicates that information back to you. The whole point is for you to tell him how you think you did, and for him to respond with how he thinks you did. Where there are differences between those two views are the areas you both need to work on. Absent that process, you can think you're doing great, and your boss is thinking you're doing poorly, and you're not communicating this perception gap to each other (sometimes with surprising and negative results down the line). I think that when this process is done correctly, it can be a very positive thing.

We have a convoluted unnecessarily complex government inspired evaluation process that runs in a proprietary web app that they bought, promptly had the developer go out of buisiness, and then discovered that it won't even open in anything other than internet Exploder 7. But they get done once a year, I usually do pretty good in them. This year i'm actually getting a promotion out of the deal too, which is nice.

Our evaluations here basically seem to consist of "getting christmas bonus or not" most years trending towards "not" anymore. But it seems to be everyone all or nothing.

I just assume if I'm not being yelled at, I'm doing a good job. Or someone else is doing much worse.

I think it would be a good sign if you could get someone to call you an Soulless Internet Tiger this year, it's been a while, I think you're slipping.

Ironically that particular ball of crazy still randomly e-mails admins with rants from time to time.

Maybe we should recruit some more ******* insane people?

No review, but since everyone else vanished and were replaced by what I assume are body doubles, I'll take it as a win. I have more bosses now, but that seems to be a recurring trend.

Exactly- you should dedicate a forum to nothing but the drivel you receive. That would be awesome.
