I've heard of the instances where people weren't allowed veggie gardens in their yards. Iir it was all about landscaping rules to keep things looking uniforms and tidy (gardens can get wild and crazy). These local ordinances have nothing to do with food equality distribution problems. Nor are individual front yard gardens really the answer.

We simply have to have the will to make fresh food available to the masses.

That said, community supported farming is big in these parts. Urbanites can buy into a share of a farmers crop - as various fruits and veggies are harvested throughout the season the share-holder is given their allotment. Typically, it's a weekly drop during the growing season.

Better news is SNAP dollars can now be used at farmers markets and farm-stands.

I planted some potato eyes in the yard a few years ago, but I'm not sure where anymore and don't know what a potato plant looks like.

That's probably the sort of thing you could Google.

Pictures of potato plants that is, not where they're planted in your yard.

Well, you could probably just ask the NSA where you planted them.

I'd bet Google Maps would still have directions. Probably have to drive around the block first, though.

So poor people live on the other side of the tracks, there are lots of them, and their lives can suck? How else do you phrase slow news day?

Pretty much like every other plant, only with potatoes. The trick is to look for the potatoes. Smiley: wink

I think there's a special pig will sniff out the potatoes for you.

I threw the remainders of a bag of potato sets into our compost bin last year. Some grew into potatoes inside there but I couldn't eat them - they got recomposted.

GIS results look like any number of stuff growing around my yard, including the poison ivy. For someone who grew up and lived most of their life here in the deep forest, I'm remarkably ignorant of flora. I don't even know the difference between oak and maple trees.

The workaround that people around here have for the "gardening" ordinance (no veggie gardens allowed in the front yard) is to cleverly disguise the veggies as landscaping, in proper raised beds, box planters, and curved rows. Lots of food plants can double as ornamentals. The local botanical garden even has examples of "salad bowl planters" - made with ornamental lettuces cabbages and other colorful salad plants, artfully arranged.

The workaround for us was not to live in a town full of douchebags who pass ordinances about what you can plant in your yard.

Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

You've said this before.

Please lay out a months worth of food that will fulfill that budget, please.

No BS, no "I don't wanna/have to" ; just do it.

ETA: I'd search the old thread but search is borked.
