What portion of those odds would you say are affected by the choice of writing the article in the first place? If it were a poor black kid, and the judge was lenient with him, would anyone have written an article about it? Let's also not forget that while the article focuses on the kid claiming he should be given leniency because his parent's have let him get away with stuff, there's nothing to show that this was actually why the judge gave him what we all assume is a light sentence.

Does anyone where actually know that the sentence he received is unusual for someone his age committing this particular crime? If not, shouldn't we?

Yes, of course, it would have been front page news on Drudge, with police lights flashing. Poor black kid KILLS two people and gets no jail time? It'd be 24/7 non stop on Fox News for weeks. Weeks. I mean this is all theoretical of course, you're talking about something with comet strike odds of happening, ever, in the US legal system.

Public discourse is certainly beneficial, since it may (and has proven to, in the past) motivate those who have such power to use it in a positive manner.

Yes, the middle class idly pontificating about the problems of the poor always ends up resulting in improving circumstances for them. Or welfare reform and mandatory minimum sentencing, but you know, SOMETHING happens, so that's good, right?

Kind of the opposite of how when a poor black woman is kidnapped or murdered, no one says anything unless there's more breaking news, but if she was a white woman of any economic value above homeless, it'd be on the news nonstop for months and make the occasional burp back to the news even after it's resolved on slow news days.

Sure. I'm reasonably certain that there are millions of black men in the US who have not been found guilty of murdering a white person (or any person for that matter). Did you mean "black people accused of murdering a white person but were found innocent?" Cause that's a whole different ball game.

So.... How about this case? Black male shoots and kills a 17 year old white male. Found not guilty. Strange that there was no widespread media outrage about this. Want to know why I'm linking to some local Rochester news article? Because there is virtually zero national media coverage of the shooting. A google search of his name has no national media outlet results in the first page (and I'm not going to look through every page). A search for his name on CNN.com reveals no hits for his name (well, two but neither of them are about this case). ABCnews.com gets 7 hits, all for some home insurance advertisement. NBCnews has some "web hits", but only four hits on articles on their site, but none of them contain the name in the article itself (I'm assuming I'm getting hits on comments).


So.... Clearly it does happen, and clearly the media fails to report it much when it does. So... Want to try again?

Drunk white kid kills 4 pedestrians who he drives over after stealing beer from Walmart equates to......Sober black guy shoots white car thief after he's attacked.

Yup, pretty much the same. For the record, you've failed to provide an example. Would you like to try again or give up and declare victory?

Edit: Also you're correct the mainstream media didn't seem particularly interested in the case. When I search CNN Roderick Scott nothing comes up. At first I thought it was odd that you'd heard of it, then I tried searching any racist blog I could think of for it and BAM! hits galore. Stormfront, the while nine. Then it made sense. Just kidding, I'm sure it was the free republic or something where "nigger" is avoided in favor of dog whistle code words and everyone just finds it really *interesting* how blacks are responsible for crime and are a drain on the economy.

So yeah, maybe you should put your racist projection back in your own head, where it belongs.

Entered this search string and was suprised by 3 things.
1) Everything on the main page seemed to be about Zimmerman.
2) Nothing popping up about OJ.
3) After typing in black males, top google suggestion was black males in prison
