First off, do you think when the world is asked about America they include Canada, Mexico and perhaps even South America; or is America simply synonymous with the United States?

As an American I know the answer to that question, I just wonder of non-Americans get it right.

Anyways, NPR is up to their exceptionalistic shenanigans again and asked other Americans (expats) what they think their host countries thinks of Americans. Here are a couple replies:

Quote:
Full of contradictions: confusingly progressive yet behind the times. — Thomas Mosley, 25, Spain

Quote:
Americans are very patriotic and all have guns." — Carly Erickson, 25, Italy

Lots mention our excess of fire arms. You can read them all here. There are pictures too. Smiley: smile

I liked this quote, though not from an expat, but from a true Brit:
Quote:
America is a large, friendly dog in a very small room," observed British historian Arnold J. Toynbee. "Every time it wags its tail, it knocks over a chair.

I figure the rest of the world sees the US when someone says America the same way most everyone sees New York. No one thinks of all the land surrounding it, just the most prominent section.

America is a good place for Canadians to buy scotch as it's about 30% cheaper

"America" is pretty universally recognized to primarily refer to the United States. According to Flea, there's a "proper" Latin American version of referring to the US and its citizens but it's only really adhered to by some old cranks who want to make a point of it. Everyone else (including in the media) just uses Americanos. This is from the same continent that teaches that the New World landmass is a single continent called "America" so if they shrug it off, I doubt the people in Slovenia are deeply concerned.

America is generally the USA. For anything else, you'd use North America, South America or the Americas to refer to both.

The USA is an imperialist giant thankfully hamstrung by a chronic lack of resolve for sustained military action and thus incapable of doing anything more than knocking down a banana republic every decade or so.

America = US no question there.

I think the general sentiment is "WTF?." America is like an idiot big brother, every other day we scratch our head and go "huh?" but we don't say anything for fear of being locked in the closet..

There are plenty of exceptions of course. I'm sure the bulk of American people are normal everyday people, but as a whole...

Because the majority of my Facebook friends are from high school in podunk Tennessee. For example, did you know that Phil was fired from Duck Dynasty because he "disparaged gays as sinners akin to adulterers and swindlers," and that means that the US no longer supports Freedom of Speech? Or that the US is a Christian nation and we aren't allowed to say Merry Christmas? I get a lot of "Like = you love Jesus! Scroll = you hate him" and "Impeach Obama!" gifs.

I stay on it for the people that I actually want to stay connected to. And to laugh at the morons that I went to school with. But the majority of what I see on there is not encouraging.

A bunch of rednecks who do something with ducks, I haven't watched it so I don't know what they do with ducks but apparently it's entertaining.

Phil was some big football player from Louisiana. He went back home and made millions and millions of dollars selling duck calls. The show is about his redneck millionaire family being redneck millionaires in Louisiana.

I saw an episode once at the nail salon. The guys all have beards like cavemen. The men were hunting turkeys while the women prepared a nice meal for them back at camp. Reminded me of a scene from Clan of the Cave Bear.

We're not scared of you. Mind you, that's because we're naive enough to think that since we're friends, you'll never turn us...

I created a thread on this awhile back. Although the term "America" is often used to refer to specifically the United States, it's technically more inclusive.

To answer what the rest of the world thinks, from my experience, people think everywhere is like NY or LA based from media.

Think he means steal our culture...then over the next century sell that culture back to us, all tainted with stripes and eagles, instead of syrup and moose.

But I also am not scared...even though my town is likely to be one of the first to fall to a US invasion, im not scared because the Rest of the world would come to Canada and beat you guys up.

Then we would be split up into several different colonies of various nations (RusRus, China, UK, France, US) before we reconstitute and reluctantly agree to preside over the largest cache of resources globally that are too much for any one real country to control.(except maybe Antarctica)

Canada is the protector of resources...not because we want to...but because the rest of you lot can't be trusted to.
