It's a duck. We all know it's a duck. So should we be surprised when it starts quacking?

Quote:
Is this man simply expressing his beliefs or spewing bigotry?

Either way, Phil Robertson, the patriarch in A&E's "Duck Dynasty," won't be duck calling on air anytime soon. The network suspended him after he made controversial remarks about gays in a magazine interview.

There's a whole slew of fairly offensive statements in the article, which you may read at your peril of course. A&E wanted a show about ignorant but fun-loving rednecks, and they got what they wanted. It's entertaining, popular, and you can have a fun time watching it. It's just like your uncle Charlie's family! Then someone had the bright idea to discuss something serious with one of them and, well, they started talking. The no-nonsense, give it to ya straight, mentality took a mighty turn for the awkward.

A couple of questions come to mind, namely who's brilliant idea was it to give that guy a microphone and an open-ended question? Also, of course, who didn't see this coming? (There's a reason we don't bring up these topics with uncle Charlie...) If you've ever watched the show at all the statements, especially by that particular individual, don't really seem that surprising. Can you really make someone like that into a mini-celebrity and then act surprised later on?

Best of luck A&E, chances are good you haven't heard the last of him. Hope you've got a good broom. Sweep quickly... Smiley: oyvey

It's a show about rednecks doing redneck things. You probably shouldn't care. People apparently do though:

Quote:
Season 5 of is set to premiere on January 15. According to A&E, its fourth season premiere in August drew nearly 12 million viewers to become the No. 1 nonfiction series telecast in cable history.

I saw someone comment that they are sure there are "a lot of companies willing to help Phil make money." I don't think he needs that help.

On the TV show at least they've got a lot of self deprecating humor. Kind of like, "We know we're rednecks, we know you're laughing at us, and we don't care. We're laughing at us too."

Nexa and I watched one episode. Well, some of one. It became clear pretty quickly that it wasn't for us. It's not just snobbery, either, I'm a big fan of Flava of Love and various other less than highbrow entertainment forms, it was just painfully bad and poorly executed. Not even funny in an unintentional sort of way...just banal and awful. A degas ballerina print on the wall of the dorm room of that A student from Kansas who just realized she shouldn't have gone to an Ivy.

Im sorry but having read what this guy said, he is basically dictating laws of the bible...sorry that the laws of the bible don't line up to the laws of society...guess the separation of church and state is doing quite well.

GLAAD or whatever is just a butthurt community that will attack anything possibly perceived as anti-gay. His comments were not anti-gay in society...just explaining that in the eyes of God that Homos were the same as many other sinners...which is truth, according to religious text.

IMO A&E is stepping out of bounds here, but its their channel and they ultimately are allowed to choose who represents them on the network. If they feel that Phil is no longer capable of representing their interests then it is their right to remove him from that position.

Free Speech works both ways...although I think the whole situation is @#%^y...Everything he said was truth according to the text it comes from...Laws of God are above laws of men...sorry ****.

What you or I believe is irrelevant. In the US the laws the law. It's written by people for people. You know separation of church and state and all that. Your god may think homosexuality is sinful, someone else's god thinks polygamy is the way to go.

Do we follow your interpretation of some midevil text?

Someone else's interpretation of the same text?

A different text?

The koran the bible, omg was there a jesus or not?!!!!

Why would it offend me?

The thing is, neither you nor I have to decide what's real, because we have laws that are separate from belief.

Good thing too.

If God is bothered by something it's well within his/her/its means to deal with the situation. Omnipotent being is going to get no sympathy from me on that account.

I thought the bible said something about the laws on earth being upheld in heaven...? So then, since the tide is changing on homosexuality, I suppose that means that god is gay for homos?

I only know of this "scandal" second-hand but Rush Limbaugh was saying the other day about how this guy went on about (paraphrased) "how could any guy be more interested in an **** than a ******?" which isn't in any Bible I've ever read.

Anyway, "separation of church and state" has nothing to do with this. This is a purely secular/business issue -- did the guy you make a show about say something that upset enough potential audience that their viewership is worth more than his show value? Whether they were upset because he was quoting the Bible, quoting Shakespeare or calling Sarah Palin a cunt is immaterial.

The thing that bothers me is this... I thought DD was going for that particular audience? In other words, is the LGBT completely above the law and does not need to care about pesky supposed American ideals like freedom of speech and whatnot.

Those freedoms are reserved for the deserving members of lgbt community, muslims, and occasional flavors of the month. Everybody else, shuddup and love us, or die; your choice.
