It's everyone who works in software development's favorite time of the project life cycle, the last month!

I'm spending a few minutes of the overtime I'll be working today, and for the next two weeks, on this post. Because if I keep staring at our issues list I'll go stir crazy.

I'm a rare bird in that I get paid for my overtime hours. My poor boss does not.

Do you regularly work overtime? Do you get paid for it?

Edit: Stray apostrophe.

Technically on duty 24/7, but get paid the same whether I leave early or work weekends. Salary can suck sometimes.

I'm salary as well. There are pluses and minuses IMO. When it's crunch time, and you work long hours, you don't get additional pay. On the flip side, pay is generally better than base hourly pay, and you're more free to set your own hours when its not crunch time. It's more about getting projects done on time than punching in/out at regular intervals. If you're the kind of person who works well in that sort of environment, it's nice.

I'm salary and I rarely work a full day. I roll in around 7:30am, work until 12:30pm, take an hour lunch and go home at 3:30pm. So I'm really putting in a seven hour day. Once in a while I'll say a few hours late but it doesn't come up often.

I typically work 45 hours in the office and 10-15 from home each week. I get no overtime.

I want Joph's work week.

My first job, no overtime. Was on salary. But I got super nice Christmas bonuses and had 5 weeks off, paid, every year.

Second job was hourly, but my boss REALLY didn't want me getting overtime, ever.

My current job is production based. I do have a set schedule, and I'm not sure how that works if I go over my end time or start early. I do get a slight bump in pay for working on holidays, but we don't get any holidays off unless we specifically ask for it.

Controls engineer in the automotive industries. Salaried. When I first started I worked all the time. On call 24/7. Now, 8years later I work 10 hours a day and 5 days a week. Currently working out of town on a large project. Just came back to work after the holiday, out of town of course. Been working out of town and staying in a hotel for about two months now. When out of town I end up working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week.

I'm a server admin now, which means lots of after hours work. For some reason people get ranky if we shut their file servers off in the middle of the day. I do get to adjust my schedule so that the hours I work after normal hours, I don't have to work during the day that week, but I don't get overtime. Then I go home and work another job banning spammers for a few hours. Then I spend my weekends fixing peoples computers.

I think I need to start subcontracting.

Self Employed, working over 40 hr/week is the norm, but it does mean more money. Sadly, it's erratic. I have to work 16-20 hour days as much as possible to make up for the days I make zilch.

I don't get overtime, but I can adjust my schedule or take time off in lieu of overtime. It also will factor into my end of year bonus.

I'm salary basically. I get paid for 40 hours a week - no overtime or comp time or stand-by time, or anything outside my 40hours.

I work 40 hours - really probably a little bit more as policy is that we work an 8.5 hour day and take a 1/2hour lunch. 8am to 4:30pm is the normal work day. More often than not my lunch is taken right here at my desk though - but on the flip side i'm overly lavish with my break time internetting.

Occasionally I have to work off hours - I try and take time off some during the regular week within the same pay cycle in compensation.

Really, the degree of stringency in ones work schedule around here boils down to ones supervisor - or the individual that has to sign your time sheet. Current supervisor is a pretty relaxed guy - but my supervisor's change frequently.

As I government employee I like to think the tax-payers are getting their money's worth with me.

Salary, no pay for overtime. Overtime when I need to stay to finish something or something explodes but I get paid personal days and they're pretty easy going about appointments etc. I mostly manage myself so as long as my clients are taken care of nobody cares what I'm up to.

I'm salaried, but classed as "non-exempt" for overtime. The company's reasoning is that they can pay less during 40 hour weeks and pay normal software wages during crunch time weeks and travel weeks. That's okay with me since the cost of living around here is very low.

One pay-grade promotion, though, and it's 40 hours salaried "exempt" from overtime. I don't think that will happen this year, but it's a possibility next year.

Congrats on getting extra money to do extra stuff. Smiley: thumbsup

Salary and no overtime pay here as well. Large amounts of overtime are rare however, other than the hour or two here and there. I can usually swap time if necessary as well. Take off early Wednesday afternoon to take the kids to the dentist, and then come in for a couple of hours on the weekend kind of thing. Really most of my overtime is weekend based, as there's free parking here on the weekends so I don't have to take the bus. Smiley: nod

Working from home is rare. The job lends itself well to it, so I do so when I can, but having two kids jumping on you asking what you're doing makes it hard to accomplish much. Smiley: lol

Put in a few extra hours so the tax-payers can get their money's worth from me as well.

My favorite time is feature lock. Hands down, not close. Well, maybe rejecting change requests afterward, but that's more of an event and less of a "time" I guess

Hmm...and you live in banjo country so...truck driver or moonshiner clearly. Possibly both.

Could be a carpenter or painter. I guess both of those are part of the moonshine industry, though.

Survey says: "We have a winner."

Yep, truck driver**. I'm an expediter, so it's mainly car parts and machinery. Probably more money in moonshine, but I don't think I'd like prison.

** Downsized from a Big Rig to a Van about 6 months ago. Not having to fiddle with log books is nice and it's cheaper to run, but I make less now. :(
