, but I understand.

It is not a thread about guns. I am just curious. My gf's brother stood up and blocked a guy's view the last time he had issues with a guy that wouldn't stop talking during the movie ( two warnings too ).

Personally, I avoid going to the movies whenever I can, but I am occasionally forced to see things I don't care about. Then again, she does things she does not care for either.

I guess I am not very confrontational. Did you guys do anything mildly unorthodox to shut the other guy up (yes, because I think it is mostly man affliction)?

I've taken phones from people. Shooting them to death is probably too much, although I'm sure we can all agree it's a completely unavoidable event that might have been mitigated if all movie theater ushers carried Uzis.

It happened in Florida, and according to the report I read, the shooter is planning to use the Stand Your Ground defense because the victim apparently threw "something" (popcorn) at him.

But, yeah. It's Florida.

I just call homeland security and tell them I think the jerk is faking talking on the phone so he can record the movie with his cameraphone. They usually show up in about 5 minutes and haul them away, never to be seen again. Unless it's a really bad movie.

I don't understand.

The old guy has probably been cussing and moaning about the dam thoughtless kids and their cell phones for a decade.

I can understand that the movie hadn't even started yet but he was convinced, probably before even sitting down in the theater that someone and their ghastly new-fangled device was going to **** him off. He was looking to be annoyed. I been there and done that.

The not-so-crazy would clear their throat angrily - get eye contact, give dirty looks to the self-centered texter - or sit and stew. A rational person might even speak up and order the phone be turned off. Or someone having a really bad day might go so far as to grab the annoying guys phone, or complain to management.

Shooting the dude is an act of insanity as far as I'm concerned.

Clearly an overreaction ( and an understatement on my part ). But I am not worried about that.

I rarely see the no calling, no texting policy actually implemented by the ushers or management. Rules that are not followed, that have no ramifications, can and will be ignored. It is only the occasional blood shed that reminds people why the rules exist in the first place ( kinda like driving laws - and again a stretch on my part).

Dunno, it is morning and I did not have my coffee yet..

You just take the phone and tell them calmly and firmly that they can have it after the film, of right then if they wish to leave. Always works for me. Possible you may have to be me for this to be broadly effective. I do look like a tired off duty cop most of the time, and have "middle aged white guy in a dress shirt, must be an authority figure" superpower that allows me to do pretty much anything with impunity.

I've seen you eat. "Quiet respect" is not a label that comes to mind.

If I've ever had a movie ruined by some yahoo on a phone, I don't remember it and it certainly didn't impact me enough to create a plan for single-handedly fighting the problem. Then again, I don't go to movie theaters very often.

The movie hadn't even started yet, so I'd question if the texting offender was truly even being offensive. I think it was a matter of expectations on the old crazy guys part.

Yes, that worked out so well in Dodge City and Tombstone.

I swear I read that as "An armed population is a white population" at first.

That's a saying all right. Not a very accurate one though or else "inner city gang member" would be synonymous with "perfect gentlemen" rather than a phrase from news stories starting with "another gang-related murder took place..."

I think the saying is "remember to pretend that Somalia doesn't exist when making vague platitudes." This guy won't have his man card revoked, though, huh? He showed that impolite ******* who was in charge, the old terrified insecure white GOP voter, that's who!

First off, inner city gang members rarely live in an environment where the population is armed. Arguably, the worst gang violence occurs in cities with the most strict gun control laws (how's that murder rate in Chicago going btw?).

Secondly, politeness and violence are two different things. The point of the quote isn't to say that an armed population will be a non-violent one, but that when everyone around you is armed, you're less likely to be impolite to people or to escalate disagreements to the point of violence for no reason. It's a comment on more of the "griefer" form of impoliteness. The guy who does things to annoy people around him specifically because he knows that it annoys them and "what are they going to do about it" is his mantra. Well, when the answer is "shoot your annoying self in the head", he's less likely to behave that way.

I'm not saying I agree 100% with the idea, but that is the concept behind the quote. And while I'm also not a fan of the "be nice or else" implication, we do commonly refer to the need for a special level of hell for people who talk in the theater, so there's that angle as well.

Right. Gang neighborhoods are set up so there's only one armed gang member per three city blocks.

It's not just a rule, kids... it's the law!

Dropping remarkably, it seems. Thanks for asking. Of course, that you did ask says how easily you latch onto mindless conservative talking points.

We all know the "point" of the quote and your reason for saying it. That's why we're laughing at you.

The entire population isn't made up of gang members though.

Ah. So things have gotten better since the courts ruled Chicago's strict gun control laws unconstitutional? Who could have predicted that?
