...I learned from Sims.

Firstly they die.

This is a rather disturbing prospect for a kid who's never lost a close relative before, and our 5 year old really enjoys watching what's happening in the game. Not ones to sugar-coat things of course we had a bit of an explanation about how everything that's alive will die at some point. We knew it was coming at some point, she does have elderly relatives and pets as well. She's lost a fish before, but I think this is the first time she's really gotten her head around what death means.

A lot of:

"I don't like us to die" and of course the tear-jerking "Can I take my blankie with me when I die?"

I blurted out something along the lines of "I'm sure we can work something out." So much for not sugar-coating anything, but that seemed like pointless suffering. Smiley: rolleyes

Next on the list will likely be woohoo, or as it seems to be known: "they're making the heart feathers in the bed again." The questions there have pretty much stopped along those lines however (after the wife went out and found one of those books with anatomically correct illustrations which is geared at explaining things to children no less). Either way though, better than piecing things together from watching Nature on PBS?

So is this how people do things these days? Smiley: lol

We bought a kitten when the baby was born and raised them together. At age two, we made him kill the cat with his bare hands.

Worked well.

Pathetic, if you were serious about it you would have got him a puppy.

Why waste a good dog.

I don't recall a specific lesson on death to my kids, but they were losing grannies all over the place as they were growing up. Old people deaths are easier, but one of the ladies, my husband's maternal grandma had babysat them frequently when they were toddlers through preschoolers and Minnesotans. She died shortly after we moved away and we didn't get back for the funeral - I think that bothered my daughter as she was particularly close to her.

I also never really had the sex talk with them other than telling my son not to make babies when he went off to college. Kids can learn way more about sex on the internet than I could ever tell them.

Xavier learned about death when he was three. Both of my grandfathers died in the same week (also the same time I met Joph). He had a difficult time with at first understanding, then grappling with such an enormous thought for one so young. We had nightmares to battle, lots of cuddles, and he also wanted to have his blankie with him if he died. Actually my two younger ones have mentioned that as well. I still have conversations crop up about death, what it means, what happens after, etc. Ashe and Soren haven't had anyone they know die, but our dog died last year and that cropped up a slew of questions and tears.

As for conversing bout sex..... whoo boy, lol! I've had many many talks about that with Xavier and Ashe, not yet Soren (4). Ashe made me almost crash my car, Xavier wants to adopt instead of have sex.... looking back "The Talk" was probably one of the most horrific and funny times of being a parent so far

Made him? My kid attempts to kill the cat pretty much daily.

*Makes notes* Don't give talk while driving. Smiley: lol

We're not too sure how it's all going to go down really. Only that what either of our parents did wasn't very useful or informative. My own talk was way too late in life. Effort was appreciated looking back, but I don't recall being given any details I didn't already know from various sources; even in those pre-internet days, thank you Discovery Channel. Wife's whole discussion was focused on it being something she was required to do whether she wanted to or not; no pertinent details being provided.

Figure we can't do much worse than that. Smiley: rolleyes

Yeah, car crashing....
I don't have time right now to get into detail because we have an early dismissal for inclement weather, but if you're interested in reading the story of each, here's links to my blog posts about them. I plan on printing these out the day my kids have children of their own.
Xavier's intro to sex ed
Ashe's intro to sex ed
And don't think that the talk is just a one time deal....
...or that if you have one gender, you're not spared from explaining things from the other perspective.

Yeah.... we have interesting sex ed talks quite frequently over here. Smiley: lol

The Sims is almost as bad the board game, "Life" in creating unrealistic expectations. I was tempted to create a "real life" mod for Sims 2 a while back, which would have boiled down to removing almost all available employment options and the affordable/debt-free college, while drastically reducing the pay on the "careers" left over.

Sadly, it was made on VHS. And I may have taped over it

There was a blog a few years ago where a woman created a homeless Sims family, a father and daughter. I don't remember everything about it, except that the father had mental problems (inappropriate and insane, I believe). She never gave them a place to live, and let the AI make most of their decisions. It was pretty interesting.

You don't have a VCR anymore? Shame, people are practically giving away VHS tapes. Free movies FTW. Smiley: wink

I'll start bracing myself for that "you're not spared from explaining things from the other perspective" thing. Smiley: lol

What I learned from The Sims was that people are stupid and need me to rule them like an iron fisted and angry god.

But you still have to start them over from scratch, right? Going through the whole diaper thing a second time for the same kid would be really annoying.

Also wouldn't it just be so weird to 're-raise' the same kid?

Naw, it'd go worse. You'd be older and have less patience for the little ones. Best to have your clone raise your kids' clone.
