I don't expect there to be much variation in what people think is the mannerly use of a cell phone, but still it's a topic of discussion. I always give precedence to the person staring me in the face as I'm easily intimidated. Generally speaking I'd not take a call during a meal or a face-to-face encounter with other humans. No one ever calls me though, so I don't have to make the difficult choice. Also, I don't have a smart phone.

This guy invented a beer cup, The Offline Glass, that requires your smart phone laying flat on the table for it to stand up. If you want to use your phone your glass will be unsupported.

Good idea or potentially wasted beer?

Potentially destroyed phones, beer glasses can be a bit wet and once you get a little drunk spillage may occur. Not a healthy environment for a phone.

The idea behind it is good but in reality, not so much.

It's a piece of art, not an engineering solution, aethien.

Isn't the proper phone method in a bar for everyone to pile their phones in the middle and if someone picks up their phone prior to the end of the night they have to pay?

Adding, yet more, culture to the beer-drinking experience.

Works for me.

Liquids and electronics don't really mix well, besides I'd just stack up the coasters instead. I mean, that's half the fun anyway.

I think it's too obvious, uninteresting and gimmicky to work as an art piece.

Also, that glass is terribly unsuited for most beer styles.

I think it's great, but only to annoy Aethien. Secretly I don't give a ****.

It's ok, I'm not really annoyed by this, I've just seen it posted half a million times on reddit's /r/beer already.

The Score on Davie, home of the popular Luongo Caesar (a Caesar that has seen its popularity skyrocket after our feature), has now installed phone lockboxes at each of its booths, in an attempt to bring back the social interaction of the days of yore.

The phone free bar concept takes place in numerous bars all over the world. Although phones aren’t outright banned at The Score on Davie, the participation is optional.

If a group decides to use the lock box, patrons can get a key from the bartender, put their phones in the lock box and then give the key back to the bartender. If someone needs to use their phone they will have to buy the group a round of shots – AKA penalty shots – before they can use their phone.

“The idea came from one of our servers, Ian Kampman, who’s been in the industry for a long time. It’s a variation of the phone stack game where people stack their phones in the midddle of the table and have to pay the bill or buy a round if they check their phone,” said owner Jesse. “We’ve just upped the anti by actually locking it up in a clear box, which drives people nuts. It’s like cell phone re-hab!”

“People have been curious about using it and so far we’ve had a great response,” continued Jesse. “Once the phones are in there people are actually talking to each other.”

I must be, I work at MI5. Besides, no-one ever found out about the bodies in my garden.

If you'd all just dump your iPaidtoomuchs for some waterproof Bear Grylls phones, you wouldn't have to be worried.

I kinda thought all them spensive smart-phones had moisture protection. They should at least be able to withstand an accidental toilet dunking.

Mine has survived rain and snow so far, I think it'd survive a moist cup.
